Tuition Bewilderment

Oct. 15, 2006 - Days 17 - 21

Hi Kate and Rebeca!  Thanks for your comments.  It gives me a lift to hear from you.  Yep, it took me the whole week to recover from our holiday, but it was worth it.  And what's this about not caring about hockey?  We care deeply and truly about hockey here.  I love, love, love the USA but how can you (they) not care about hockey?  Ha ha!  My sister-in-law lives in Houston, and she sometimes gets together with some other Canadians down there to go to hockey games to cheer.  They are a small but lusty group of cheerers.

I'm trying to get geared up (in my mind) for the school week ahead.  Boy #1 and Boy #2 will be doing cards #17 through #21 this week.  There are 200 cards in a school year, each of which contains one day's worth of work (we started that particular system only recently).  It works quite well so far.  Little Girlfriend is doing some preschool: Phonics Pathways and lots of read alouds.  She likes it.

One thing I will be adding to the lessons is poetry.  My guys actually like memorizing poems and have done so in past years.  My oldest asked if we could it this year, too.  I decided to start with Piano by D. H. Lawrence.  I kind of like it.  I like the poignant stuff like The Highwayman by Noyes or even spooky-ish poems like Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven.  Piano is sad and sweet.  We'll see how the boys like it.

Have a fantastic week, everyone!

Oct. 16, 2006 - Hey, I know who Wayne Gretzsky is (or was)!

I just can't spell his name. Actually, we like to watch hockey during the Winter Olympics and we're going to try to make it to the Vancouver games (we hope!) Otherwise, we're not much of a sports-minded family. Funny, I have a sister in Round Rock, Texas but she doesn't watch hockey, I'm afraid! Good for you to include poetry, especially if the kids like it.
Thanks for your comment on my post. If you can believe it, I've never read Jane Austen but recently I've thought about it. We might even have some of her books in our home library (it is rather extensive) and I know her books are good by their reputation. Thanks for the reminder! Have a good week.

Before I forget -- Are the mega menu mailers really great? You sounded like you really like them! I have a couple of her books and at one time I had one of her menu mailers, one that sent you a menu for every week, but we rarely used it, so I canceled it after a few months. I've been going back and forth about getting the mega mailer because I like cooking ahead and freezing -- but I wasn't sure.

Secondly -- WE LOVE HOCKEY HERE IN MICHIGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course we are so close to Canada that we might not count. LOL My family is fanatic over hockey -- and NOT just the Red Wings! My Mother and Sister have the hockey network on cable and watch ALL the hockey games they can! Hockey every night of the week :)

And finally (I'm longwinded, can you tell?) is there a post where you talk more about your "card" system? This sounds like a great idea!

Thanks for commenting on my blog,

Sherry

I know you are busy but it you would like to do this tag, here it is. Think about your homeschool resources and name the following:

1) One homeschooling book you have enjoyed.
2) One resource you wouldn't be without.
3) One resource you wish you had never bought.
4) One resource you enjoyed last year.
5) One resource you will be using next year.
6) One resource you would like to buy.
7) One resource you wish existed.
8) One homeschooling catalog you enjoy reading.
9) One homeschooling website you use regularly.

Tag 5 others if you'd like. Hope to hear from you soon. Take care.

Kate
