• May. 11, 2007 - Another 'recipe' to file away

It's Friday! It's Friday!  This is also the last weekend of soccer, unless the boys win the tournament game which is, well, highly unlikely.  Today was busy with a lot of reading, crouquet, and running in the woods.  We also made sidwalk chalk.  I am telling you, this was the easiest thing.  I realize that chalk isn't that expensive but it was fun to make.  Here is the recipe:

ingredients:  1/3 cup quick-setting plaster of Paris

                         1 TBS powdered temper paint

                         3 Tbs water

Toilet paper tube or plastic cookie cutter (go ahead and experiment with other molds)

directions:  Seal one end of the mold with duct tape.  Mix plaster, paint and water together until blended.  Spoon into the mold (go quick). This needs about 30-45 min to dry.  Carefully pop the chalk out of the mold.  You will need to peel away the toilet paper tube if that is what you used.

That is all there was to it!  Our street has since been decorated with various designs and pictures.

Oh yes, I also started my two oldest on typing.  My wacko #2 boy is loving it!  He keeps stealing off to the computer to practice his new skill.  I am using Keyboarding Skills by Diana Hanbury King.  It has a built in easel so it stands up on the desk.  I keep having flash backs to my high school typing class.  Actually, that class was probably the most useful class I had before college.

Well, I've rambled on enough.  I would like to know your summer schedules.  Do you assign reading, math, or just take off the entire summer?  I am tossing around the idea of doing some elective things that I never seem to have time for during the school year.   Thanks for your input,

Anissa

Usually we take the summer off. Sometime around the end of May until sometime in August. But this summer we'll be working on reading and writing with my son, and my daughter will be finishing up her grammer and spelling. I like to take some sort of summer break, just so the kids have a rest time, and we can enjoy the weather. :)

Great chalk recipe! I am going to try this one as soon as I can get my house in order, (yeah right!) I love doing math in the driveway with the chalk. It is so much nicer than being inside!

Thanks for the chalk recipe. My nieces will love it! My son is behind in Math, so we will have to continue that through the summer, but for the most part we take the whole summer off. We stick to the schedule of the public school that they would attend, if they'd went to school. I need those summer months off! We only have 2 more weeks left. YAY!

Have a great weekend! Blessings,

Lori

of making chalk! Thanks for the idea!

Schedule??? I have been trying to make a schedule ever since we moved here (23 mos ago), and it keeps changing!

I'm going to try to keep circle time, which is a staple for us, with the kids being 1 an 3, and then Math with science being spending a lot of time outdoors following curiosities. I'd like to do Before Five in a Row, which I have bought, but haven't had time for..
