me and my guys

Quid agis?  I had one of those aha! moments yesterday.  I must first remind you of a prior confession of mine - that I did not like teaching latin.  For those of you who are not going the classical route you are scratching your heads wondering why bother with a dead language.  However, those who are die hard classical educators are gasping in horror.  You see, latin, is suppose to be taught, according to experts in classical education.  It has something to do with learning word roots or torturing poor moms, I'm not sure which.  Anyways,  I was trying to plow through some conjugations and declensions yesterday with my oldest.  He was willing to play along but totally uninspired.  Then it hit me - this curriculum is boorrrrrrring!   If is bores me, can you imagine what it does to an 11 year old boy?  So I told him that we would get through some of the vocab and things like that but we would skip the latin prayers.  This would get us to the end quicker and then I could find something different to use.   Maybe a workbook that uses puzzles or some other means of teaching would help us along.  The only reason I used this curriclum was because the expert told me to... If I am following someone else's curriculum choice for my kids then am I really homeschooling?

I must now say valete dear amici.

Well, I'm not taking the classical route, so we are not doing Latin. But, I've done that so many times with other curriculum and subjects. Well the experts said he/she needs to know this now, or from this specific book. It's funny how we bring them home, then follow what someone else says or does. I'm glad you had the 'light bulb' moment. I hope you find what works for you. :)

Hi Anissa!

Oh my! Latin, huh? I would see teaching it as complete torture. I barely understand our own language. Maybe learning Latin would help......nah, it would confuse me even more than I already am. LOL.

I had a few spare minutes, so I thought I'd get around to saying hello to everyone. I miss you all dearly and can't wait to get back to blogging more regular.

Thank you for your warm wishes. I pray that you all have a very blessed Thanksgiving.

Love ya,
Lori

I like your post. My mother did some Latin, and she would always tell me relevant bits and pieces as I was growing up. It is so relevant to understand the English language. That's so funny about dumping the expert-recommended curriculum. Ha. Recommended on what basis?? Too funny.
I've seen games and flash cards and tapes available.

• Nov. 15, 2007 - Why torture yourself?

Posted by SuzyScribbles
Why torture yourself and your DS by finishing it at all? The biggest lesson I learned over the years was "Hey, this is MY school. I make the rules. If we don't like the curriculum, we don't HAVE to finish it. Let's find something we like better." (This took awhile, BTW. I am a "finish the course" kind of person; faithful to the end and all that.)
Ah, you think, but the money I spent! I want to be a good steward. But consider this: is it worth the $$$ to make your DS absolutely hate Latin, when there are (hopefully) fun ways to conquer this subject? So you wasted a few bucks. Homeschooling is the biggest Black Hole of my existence. I've bought and tossed more books than I can shake a stick at. And...hmmm...we aren't starving yet, and the kids learned a lot.
Balance, sister, balance! :-)
Good luck on the Great Latin Hunt...

I'm on a mission to visit as many HSB blogs of fellow classically homeschooling families as I can. Well, at least those that have posted recently! So. Here are my 2 cents about your Latin woes. 1) I feel your pain! my oldest is 9 and we are on our 3rd Latin curriculum. We started with Latin's Not So Tough, moved to Prima Latina and then landed at Latin for Children. Ahhh. finally something I can live with. It's Fun! It's (relatively) easy for me to follow along with! there's a DVD of all the lessons! There are activity books, flash games online, online quizes and such to print out and use, even a latin reader that is geared toward the Veritas Press History cards. What could be better?? We're only 9 lessons into it, but so far, so good. My 9 year old is doing all the work, my 7 year old is memorizing the vocab and some basic conjugations, declensions. Come visit me and click on the link for Latin for Children to visit their website (and no, I don't work for them. ha)
You have a great blog!
