another blog on the fire

Nov. 19, 2006 - Best Start?

I am an estimator for a construction company that does commercial & institutional additions and renovations, among other things. We in the estimating department have been swamped this year pricing projects which are being funded through the Ontario Governments project called "Best Start". These projects, one of which our company is currently constructing, are daycare centre additions to elementary schools. The idea behind the program, apparently, is that by putting children into these daycare centres in the schools, it will make for an easier transition into public school.

An easy transition into a system which we can clearly see is flawed.

Our company is also working on renovations to 2 high schools and I have spoken to one of our site superintendants about some of what his experience working in the schools has been.

One of the teachers told him that they are having a good day if they haven't been told to 'f-off' by a student.

Sounds like a positive environment.

Some examples of how messed up the system can be are found here:

Steve Walden's blog, http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/SteveWalden/ is another I enjoy which keeps up on the latest school stories to hit the news.

So, yes, I guess they are probably right... we better rush out there and sign our infants up to ensure that they get the 'Best Start'.

Yeah, having kids that disrespectful to adults makes me want to send my preschooler to that school. Can you immagine the foul language they would come home with?

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I don't think you will have to get poisoned to be an involved father. I think that is just me.
