another blog on the fire

Feb. 13, 2008 - Falling apart...

I am sick again. I hardly used to get sick at all, but this past year has not been good. Thankfully, after my week off last spring with pneumonia, my boss implemented a 3 day sick policy. But I wasn't hoping to use 2/3's of this so early in the year.

I have had a rotten cold since last Friday and I spent much of the weekend sleeping. I was concerned because of the pneumonia last year, so I went to see a doctor on Monday. Not my doctor - my doctor is an hour away. So I went in to the hospital here in our little town (no walk in clinic here, so no options). He said he has seen 200-300 cases in the last couple of weeks and I just need to ride it out. But the nurse recommended that I take Advil Cold & Sinus. I saw the doc around 3pm, picked up some of the meds, went home and took some. In the evening I was feeling light headed, which is the way I felt when I had pneumonia last year - I think a combination of not getting enough oxygen and hyperventilating, trying to breathe in enough oxygen.

Tuesday morning I got up for work and my first thought when I walked in the bathroom was, "Man, do I look like Saddam Hussein when they pulled him out of that hole in the ground." Not my best look, but that's what the combination of beard, bedhead and sickness did for me. So I went to work and took some more of those cold pills. All day I was feeling dizzy and light-headed and a couple of times I almost fell over when I got up out of my chair. I was just about to take more of these pills, when I thought, "hey, maybe since I feel like I have had a few beers here, I should read what this package says". Sure enough, it said that if I had any of these side effects - including dizzyness - I should discontinue use and contact a physician. So I called my doctor's office in London and spoke to the nurse there that knows me and she confirmed that it was this drug that was making me dizzy. Then she chastised me for being at work, "You're not at work, are you? You need to go home to bed for at least another 24 hrs or your not going to get better. Do I need to call Kristina and tell her you're on your way home?" The only problem with that is that I knew I couldn't drive at the time. I finished off my day (a couple hours) and sobered up enough to drive home. But I did tell my boss that I was not coming in the next day.

I think that is the first time I 'called in sick' the day before, but it was nice knowing I didn't have to worry about it in the morning and I could just rest. It was also nice because we got a bunch more snow overnight and I would have had to shovel to get out - and I think that is what started this in the first place.

nice for you and nice for me ... except the shovelling part. I always forget how much I begrudge that.
but watching the snow fly last night makes me feel like christmas every time it happens.
I am still a kid at heart
oh, and one of us needs to get narrower so that chair really can hold two ...
