Mar. 14, 2008 - One step closer to knowing

This past year has a been a year of growth and freedom and of soul searching. A year of wondering what really matters in this life and where we really fit in. What has God been doing with us and where is He going with us? (and where does He want us to go with Him?)

We feel like we are closer to some of those answers. You can read about where we are at with this on my wife's blog, here.

Mar. 10, 2008 - A full weekend!

Where to start??

OK. How about here? We had a chance to meet some fellow homeschoolbloggers and their four bloglets. That was alot of fun. And they're not too far away, so we hope to do it again sometime.

We were on our way to Detroit (unh! Heart of rock 'n roll...) to go to the Henry Ford Museum as a family get-together to celebrate my parents 40th anniversary. We went ahead of my family so we would have time to meet the Elliotts. At the museum, we met up with my mom & dad, my brother and sister and their families. The museum was very well laid out with really nice displays. I thought it was just going to be about the history of transportation, but it covered a lot more than that.

Here are some highlights...

This is what I would love to have and do... totally groovy:

This is the car JFK was shot in:

This was the highlight of the museum for me. It was on this bus in 1955 that Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man and she changed history.

The middle picture shows the original bus number in the original paint over the bus driver's seat. The seat Rosa sat in was second from the left in the picture above (not the original seat - the original seats were destroyed and have been replaced).

The whole idea of segregation baffles me. Where did anyone get this idea? And how can they use God's name to promote it? As we walked in to the area where the bus was, we passed a display of Ku Klux Klan items. Among them were a hood, a rally poster and a handbook. It was sickening to see the items and read a section of rules of Klansmen. I could not believe what I read. It was all lies - the KKK stood for the complete opposite of what was stated on the page I read. A chill went down my back when I stood there.

I wish I had more time to spend in the section where the bus was. It had several articles and artifacts with regards to justice and liberty. Unfortunately, we got to that area just before the museum closed and we just had time to sit on the bus.

We left Detroit in a snowstorm and had a terrible drive back through it. I think we passed 5 cars in the ditch. But near the end of the trip - close to home - was a Cracker Barrel. Mmmm mmm.

Then we drove the rest of the way home to find that we were snowed out! I had to park on the street and shoveled just enough to back in, ready to go out to church in the morning.

On Sunday morning the roads were clear enough to make the trek back into town to church - which was a good thing, because Kristina and I were slated to give our testimonies and become members of our church. We decided to trade in our gypsie wagon and become members. Thankfully, the other members said yes and we're 'in'. Boy wouldn't that have been awkward if we were standing up there and they said, "no"!

Mar. 6, 2008 - LOOK Update

I got an email this week saying that one of my entries for the LOOK Show has made it through the first round. Next I need to bring the original piece "PUSH" in to the gallery for the second round of judging. If accepted, it will hang at Gallery Lambton for all to see for a month, I will get paid an artist's fee (bonus!) and there are a few chances to win awards.

The original piece has to be in within the next 2 weeks and then they will make the final decision before the show starts. I wait impatiently.

Mar. 3, 2008 - Six Word Memoir Meme

Kristina tagged me for a Six Word Memoir Meme that she got from Smallworld.

I like this one. The idea is to sum up your life in 6 words. Here's the deal...

to start a six word memoir meme here are the rules:

1. Write your own six word memoir
2. Post it on your blog and include a visual illustration if you’d like
3. Link to the person that tagged you in your post and to this original post if possible so we can track it as it travels across the blogosphere
4 .Tag five more blogs with links
5. And don’t forget to leave a comment on the tagged blogs with an invitation to play!

I have thought of this for a while and come up with several thoughts - but how to pick the 6 words to sum it all up?? Here goes... thinking of this journey that life is:

"I'll know when I get there"

As for tags... I'll try to get some dads on this one:

Dr Hibiscus

Dad2Three

Feed Your Faith

RC Elliott

Steve Walden

Feb. 27, 2008 - The "Green Office"

A lot of companies are 'going green' and trying to reduce paper use and I understand that. But sometimes there needs to be a paper copy of something in the file - for the record.

Today I received an email and thought it was one of those things that I need to print for the file.

It turns out it was a 2 page email. I know you can't read what it says, so I'll tell you... First, here's page 2 of the email I printed:

So, what does it say? Well, at the bottom is a little page number '2'.

At the top?

A little enviro logo and the words, "Please only print this e-mail if you require a copy, let's all do our part to help keep our environment green!"

I guess I will do my part by putting page 2 in the recycling bin.

Feb. 24, 2008 - I believe that since I have read Evan's blog, I have been tagged.

That's right, Evan blogged and tagged any homeschoolblogger that read it. I read it, so here goes...

how many floors does your house have?

2.

how many t.v's does your house have?

2 (that is, if 10 inches of black & white counts as a TV).

how many computers does your house have?

1 if I am at work, 2 if I bring Lappie home from work.

having fun?

Most fun I've had in 5 minutes!

what is about 1 yard directly in front of you?

My art desk piled with lots of junk.

what does your hair look like right now?

Like Bob Ross. Just kidding, but it is pretty curly. It did look quite like Bob's back in the spring.

is anyone in the room with you?

My RedwallReader and bloggerjoe.

what room in the house are you in?

The kitchen part of the downstairs kitchen/living room/dining room. I like to call it "The Great Room" because I think it makes it sound fancy.

was it fun?

Sure.

Who are you going to tag?

I'm going to tag random bloggers again and see if any of them answer this time. None did last time I tried this, but it seemed that alot of those I tagged had not blogged in about a year. This time I will only tag random people who have blogged in February, who aren't going through some major life catastrophe (that they are currently blogging about), and who aren't in the process of moving their blog elsewhere. Here we go...

Feb. 24, 2008 - Cow Head in a Mug

I'm afraid "Cow Head in a Mug" - or "Fresh Milk" as I referred to it - is no longer with us in the flesh. After years of carting all of my highschool work around with us I finally decided to part with them. I did, however, take pictures of the things I disposed before disposing. Unfortunately, the quality of most of the pictures is pretty poor. I am pretty sure I did this one in grade 10.

So now, without further ado... I give you "Fresh Milk"
