• Apr. 17, 2007 - Croup & Coincidences

Over the last few days, we've had a sudden case of quite severe croup on our hands. Blake came down with a slight wheezy cough on Saturday afternoon, and by that same night we could tell he had definite croup symptoms. We steamed up his bedroom, gave him a dose of Nurofen and wrapped his throat with my Mum's old fashioned "1-2-3 Never Fail To Cure Croup Recipe". Just in case anyone wants to know, it's one part methylated spirits, two parts vinegar and three parts water, shaken up in a bottle. We dipped an old cloth nappy strip in it and tied it around Blakey's throat, and although the smell of him coming up behind me with that neckcloth brought back a surge of childhood memories, it did fail to cure Blake. So last night we finished up taking him into hospital, where the doctor said he had to stay the night under observation. That meant that someone had to spend the night there with him, of course, and that person was me. I'm pleased to report that Blake had a sound sleep and ended up quite improved, but not so for me. Having to huddle on a very narrow side of the one bed with my ear right next to his croupy snores isn't my idea of an ideal night. The nurses tiptoed in to assess his oxygen levels and temperature every few hours and it seemed that I was still awake whenever they came. My nerves were raw by the time we were allowed home this morning. I warned Logan & Emma that I was in no mood for listening to any bickering from them. "Tread carefully, I've got one nerve left and you're getting on it!"

Anyway, as a total change to one of my favourite subjects of stunning coincidences, I found the following in a book from the library and was blown away! I knew a smattering of American history but is this freaky, or what? The coincidences get more bizarre the further down you read. The question I have to ask my American friends is, were you guys already aware of all this??

Similarities between the Lincoln & Kennedy assasinations

1) Both Lincoln and Kennedy were elected to the presidency exactly one hundred years apart, in 1860 and 1960.

2) Both Lincoln and Kennedy each had to bury a child who had died during their occupancy of the White House.

3) President Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy. President Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln.

4) Each of their secretaries advised them not to go to the places where they were assasinated: Lincoln to the theatre, Kennedy to Dallas, Texas.

5) Both were assasinated in the presence of their wives by gunshot wounds to the back of the head.

6) The vice presidents who succeeded the assasinated presidents were both former senators, both from the south and both named Johnson.

7) Both vice presidents, Andrew Johnson and Lyndon Johnson were born exactly 100 years apart, in 1808 and 1908.

8) Both assassins had three names totaling fifteen letters: John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald.

9) Both assassins were born 100 years apart, in 1839 and 1939.

10) Booth shot Lincoln in a theatre and ran to a warehouse. Oswald shot Kennedy from his perch in a warehouse and ran to a theatre!

11) Both assassins were killed before they were brought to trial.

12) Lincoln and Kennedy both left a legacy for the advancement of civil rights.

13) Both presidents' last names contain 7 letters.

Oh, wow. I'm so glad Blake's feeling better. I hope you got to take a nap...and may much rest come to you!!

Several years ago, someone - I'm assuming it was the US Mint, I don't know - produce a penny that was engraved with both presidents faces. Along with this penny came a card with this information. It's really freaky, isn't it?

I didn't know the fact about both presidents losing children, though. That's a new one to me.

I can't wait to see if you get more information!

Hi Paula-
I'm glad to hear Blake is doing better. We've been through croup numerous times. It can be scary when your child can't breathe. Every winter at least one of them would develop it, usually the youngest of course, who was the least able to remain calm! Aaarrgh!
I was interested in your facts about Lincoln and Kennedy. I had no idea! That's more than coincidental, isn't it?
Are you off soon on your writers trip? That was coming up in May, wasn't it?

How scary for you and Blake. I'm so glad he's doing better. The hardest part always seems to be knowing when it's time to get them to the hospital. We had a similar experience with my son a few years ago. He was having asthma trouble and wasn't responding to the nebulizer medicine. Because I have had many of my own emergency room attacks, I knew the signs that he needed help, but it is frightening to sit helplessly by, mentally urging them to breathe properly.
I did know some of the Lincoln-Kennedy coincidences, although not all. Fascinating, isn't it? We love history here!

Peace and Laughter,
Cristina

I'm so sorry you and Blake had to spend the night in the hospital but I'm sure glad he's better. I hope he (and you) dont' have to go through that again for a very long time.

Years ago, I got the same coin and card that ComfyDenim mentioned in her comment. I remembered some of what you wrote but some of it was new to me. These things would be hard to believe if they weren't facts that can be proven. My dh also told me this: Presidents elected every 20 years, starting with Lincoln in 1860, were either assinated or died in office, ending with Kennedy's election in 1960. Ronald Reagan broke the cycle, being elected in 1980, although there was an attempted assassination during his presidency. He was shot, as well as a member of his cabinet (last name Baker). Mr. Baker was never the same but Pres. Reagan pulled through. I remember when it happened, I cried - we were all praying for him. I cried again when he died a few years ago. Anyway, there's some more American history for you! Take care, hope you get some extra rest soon.

Aww...overnighters in the hospital are not fun at all. I've a daughter who used to be very croupy when she was little, and a son who used to have to stay in hospital at least once a winter due to asthma. I'm glad you survived.
About coincidences...I love reading stuff like that. The intrigue gets my thoughts racing and I usually end up doing some research on the topic.
Blessings!

I am glad Blake is doing better. Croup is kinda scary. Our oldest got it when he was about 2 years old. We sat in the steamy bathroom for a LONG time until he could breathe better.

I hadn't heard those things about Lincoln and Kennedy before. Pretty odd! I will have to share those with the boys.
