Aug. 30, 2006 - Just keeping my head above water!

Okay ...  a while ago we had an ongoing discussion in our co-op group about activities ... what's too much, what's enough and how does one decide what is of value. I've looked at a hundred opinions of what's important to keep in and what's not! I just can't decide!

I felt guilty for not providing music lessons, so this year we've added them! AJ wants to do scouts ... so, when football concludes, we'll do that. He plays whatever sport the season calls for, goes to youth group, is joining a choir, takes fiddle lessons on Tuesdays, co-op class and a project with another family on Mondays ... right now, zero days when we are at home all day! NADA! And I don't know if we're doing too much or not, but I'm worn out!

no days at home is not good... trust me... burn-out is just around the corner. Be home as much as you can be during the school week!

Sep. 6, 2006 - keep swimming!

yeah... I know what you're saying. We're lucky that our kids are not involved in THAT MANY sports. L & D are playing soccer this fall, and J is continuing in Fencing. L did swimming this summer, and we'll be continuing that during this year. J & L both have music lessons (violin and piano respectively, + J will be staring guitar soon), and we're deeply involved in scouting (boy scouts for J and american heritage girls for L). There are lots of church and BHEA events as well of course. It's definitely a balancing act. Burnout is a definite possibility if you get in over your head, but what would you be willing to give up? I think that one of the great things about homeschooling is giving the kids the opportunity to explore LOTS of different things to see what they're REALLY interested in, and then pursuing those specific things more as they grow older. When they're young you can do lots of things to see what really clicks, and then as they get older you can decide what to really pursue.

Good luck!
