Zachary Is Learning Addition With Manipulatives Today

The CD (version 2.03) of Treasure Mathstorm arrived this morning. We have an ancient (more than 10 years old) disk (version 1.0) of this favorite game, but I was worried that it would soon be unreadable as age impacts magnetic material considerably. Zach has been having a great time with the program! Here he is using pennies as manipulatives to help himself solve 6 + 3. He has been solving addition problems, telling time to 30 minutes, using virtual pennies to buy nets, figuring out what weights to put on one side of a scale to equal the amount on the other, and counting, counting, counting. I love this program. Well worth the $6!

This game was made by the Learning Company which, in my opinion made some of the best designed games back when the older kids where small. They have many great classic titles that I would highly recommend looking up (Gizmos and Gadgets for science, SuperSolvers OutNumbered for story problem practice, Treasure Galaxy as a perfect math compliment to Treasure Mathstorm). A few are still being produced at the Learning Company and are available at their website. Others, like Treasure Mathstorm are no longer being made. We had to do an internet search to find our new copy. Though hard to find, these are older titles, so you can find great prices.

These are loaded on a Windows 98SE machine. I would inquire with a seller to find out if these will run on a newer operating system. I think all the CD updated ones willl the original disk-based version probably will not. So double check the format before you buy. Even if you have a 98 os, I would still go with the CD versions over disk because longevity of the magnetic material on the disks are questionable.

The educational design is excellent. The graphics are not as intensive as the modern preschool and elementary games are, but Zachary has not even noticed the difference. With over 25 educational games installed, it has been the Treasure Galaxy, Gizmos and Gadgets, and Treasure Mathstorm games that he has chosen most frequently to play. He will play them for hours. The skill level on these two are early elementary, but even as a preschooler he loves them. These three games were favorites of the older kids when they were young too.

For answering my questions. I am going to be making something called a mini office for my kids on various subjects. I look forward to the Spiderman theme. I also joined the virtual homeschool group. I am EmbersAcademy there.
