Jun. 9, 2006 - Nursing

I breastfeed my children. I have noticed that America is not very nursing friendly but other countries have no problem letting the babies nurse until they are a couple years old. So, what do I do? Follow the America's advice or ponder on what God would want me to do? Here is what I think God has led me to believe.
  1. Godly examples - In the Bible the women always nursed the children way past a year. I don't think it had anything to do with nutrition or technology. If anything the produce was actually healthier than it is now days. Did anyone in the Bible ever put food in a mortar and crush it until it was mushy enough to feed a baby? No.
  2. Physical observation - Maybe there is a reason that God does not have babies born with teeth. Why would he do that? Does it make sense to give a child food that isn't physically capable of chewing it up? No. If God wanted babies to eat food he could have made it so they were born that way or got teeth sooner. He chooses to do everything for a reason.
  3. Healing time - Did you know that as long as you are strictly nursing you don't ovulate? That means breastfeeding at night and all day. This is without cereal. I am sure that there are a few (VERY FEW) exceptions to this. I have talked to women that said this was not true because they got pregnant while nursing but while we were talking they realized that they stopped nursing at night or started cereal or just one meal a day. Sometimes it only takes a small decrease in milk production to get ovulation going again. Anyhow, the point is as long as you are nursing the Bible way your body will have time to heal between babies. You will have time to train your child before the next one and you will be healthier. Your uterus will shrink back down to size and you will lose the last of the pregnancy weight.
  4. Medical reasons - If a child is fed cereal they have a higher chance of getting allergies. They can't digest regular grains because their little bodies don't make the enzyme to do it. So instead we feed them refined baby cereals and give them allergies. It just so happens that they begin to make that enzyme that digests grains around the same time they start to get teeth! I think in God's infinite wisdom he gave us a signal saying it is ok to feed the baby.
After I pondered all this I decided that I am going to go against society and wean my baby as slowly or quickly as the Lord reveals.
Benjamin is 8 months old now. He had his first drink of water when he knew how to pull the cup over to his mouth and taste it. I know this is horrible.... but.... his first taste of food was ice cream. We were having a treat (we eat really healthy so this was a treat) and he was VERY insistent that I let him grab the icecream cone and taste. The look on his face said he did not like it. He still rarely eats solid food and is mostly nursed. He usually only tastes something when we are out and everyone is eating. It has only been a handful of times.
Most people would think I was crazy for not giving him food and not teaching him to eat but I am reaping the bene
fits of doing it this way. He is as healthy as a horse and big and cute and smart. I am not just saying that. It is like I can see the wheels just turning in his head when he thinks and looks at things.

I whole heartedly agree. I only introduced solid foods because I think that was what was expected of me. I nursed DS for 16 months. I look back on that time with fondness and joy. In fact, I miss those nursing times.

And Benjamin is VERY cute, and VERY healthy. This coming for only a semi-biased source. LOL

And I don't think you're crazy in the least! My wee one did not start solids until he was 15 months old...HIS choice. Around 10 months, we offered here and there, but he was never interested. When he was 15 months, he decided he was sort of interested in solids, but it was still a rarity. He wasn't on solids well, until he was around 2 years old, and this wee one was NOT small, in the least! IN fact, doctor told me time and again "I don't know what you're feeding this guy, but don't stop!!" LMBOOOO!! Yeah...erm...it's called breastmilk!! My guy finally self-weaned at 5 years 4 months. Looking back, I have to laugh at some of the things people said, or what they must have thought, him still getting his "mommies" at age 5...too bad they don't realise that in most societies, they nurse well beyond age 6! At any rate, it's a time in my life I would never change, and am SOOO thankful to G-d that He made me to be able to care for my guy so well...my guy, who not incidentally, is seldom ever, or has seldom ever been, ill. Breastmilk rocks!!

Nursing mommas unite!

Yep, weirdo American nursing mom here too...all my kiddos nursed past a year. They are healthy as can be. I must admit though, nursing the twins at 1 year of age was NOT a picinic. The pokes, the gymnastics and the hair pulling (mine and theirs!) was sometimes out of control...but so well worth it. They were preemies and I know it was momma's milk that got them up where they should've been with their "peers"...

My little guy is now 11 months old and still going strong. I am so glad. I think God made mommas to nurse so everyone involved would take breaks out of their busy days and just cuddle and be close and quiet for awhile.

Nursing...it does a momma good.

Hi again Babymaker!!!!

Just read an article on DHA for nursing moms. Moms need to supplement, not give it to the babies. They'd get it thru the breastmilk...

You familiar with this?

I thought DHA was derived from cows and isn't all that helpful for human babies...but I can't find my original source on this and came up with nothing on a google search.

This would be a good topic...you have these types of topics in your blog...hint, hint...

Smiles to ya~
