Jun. 17, 2006 - More bee information

Since everyone seemed to enjoy the bees I thought I would share some more about them. (Really I just like to talk about them) I have some interesting pictures.

This one is of my husband with thousands of bees by his head. Why isn't he scared you ask? There are 2 reasons. #1. Bees are not as mean as everyone makes them out to be. Only hornets and wasps are truly mean. #2 These bees swarmed which means they are much friendlier than normal since they have no home, honey or brood to protect.

This is a picture of the honey comb.

This is a picture of the brood or baby bees. See the little white worm looking things in the holes? They will turn into bees within just a few weeks. They always keep the brood separate from the honey. So if I bring a frame of honey in the house I do not have to worry about larvae being in it.

Once in a while they try to make a new queen. Sometimes it is because they want to replace an old queen who is not as good as she used to be. Other times it is because they are out of room and need another queen so they can split into two hives. You can tell why they are making the queen because they put them in special places on the frame. This is a picture of some queen cells that I had to cut off of a frame. By doing this I prevented a swarm. They remind me of a peanut shells.

We opened it up and saw the queen that was not fully developed. It was very interesting. Sorry the picture is not as good as it should be. The queen is longer and thinner than a normal bee.

If any of you out there have ever considered keeping bees you should try it. The honey is incredibly healthy for you! Unlike store  honey it is full of vitamins and enzymes and is just a superfood! There is a need for beekeepers too. It used to be a huge hobby but it has died off and needs to be revived. Bees have a huge impact on our environment. I am not a "tree hugger" by any means but I am telling you we need more bees.

Jun. 17, 2006 - Bees

My Honey (pun intended!) and I used to keep bees, too! That is , until our three box hive was stolen from the field it was in. We still have all the implements, and would love to build an observation hive someday!

About the swarms...my Honey used to make $35 a swarm! Someone would wake up to a resting swarm in their tree, freak out and call him (as the only swarm collector in the area), and we would get paid and get a new family! He often sold the collected swarm to local beekeepers! Win, win win! They really are pretty harmless. He would collect them in shorts and t-shirt and I would be standing very nearby with our one year old in my arms (she's now 10!! Unbelievable!).

Have fun with your bees!
