Jul. 13, 2006 - Liquid Extracts and Tinctures
What is the difference between a liquid extract and a tincture?
Liquid Extract- This is 4x stronger than capsules are. You can take it or you can add it to oil for a massage ointment. Remember, your skin is your biggest organ.
To make extract yourself this is what you mix together-
4 oz. dry herbs (twice that if you are using fresh)
1 pint of apple cider vinegar (NOT WHITE VINEGAR) OR glycerin OR 80 proof alcohol
Pinch of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is optional as a preservative
I recommend using the alcohol. It will work great. Glycerin is expensive and vinegar is not what it used to be. If you can see through vinegar without it being cloudy than it is to filtered. In fact, I have been told you should not use it unless it is raw with the mother still in it.
After this you let it sit and shake it once a day. If you used dry herbs than you do this for 1 week but if you used fresh you need to do this for 15 days. Strain it and store it.
Tincture- 14x stronger than extract!! 2 drops = 1 capsule. This is very potent and just a drop or two on the wrist or feet will go straight into your blood stream.
To make this you need -
160z colored glass bottle
1 oz powdered herb OR 50 capsules OR 2 oz bulk
4 oz distilled water
1 tablespoon glycerin
12 oz 80 proof alcohol
You let this sit for 14 days and shake it everyday and then strain it. It should fit in your 16 oz bottle.
So that is the difference between those two things. Have fun! I will write about others later. I am thinking that a poultice and fomentation will be next.

80% proof? Is that of anything or something specific?
