Sep. 9, 2006 - Raising Crickets for Critters

It turns out that it is really easy to do this. I found this detailed, step by step website about how to do it.

I have ours in an old container with a piece of cheesecloth over the opening. I held the cheesecloth on with rubberbands. We used a plastic divided food tray to hold the water, food and dirt seperate. To keep it warm we put it on top of our computer monitor.

Feeding them is easy because they eat things like old produce and catfood. You could always buy the special feed at the petstore if you wanted. We caught ours wild in the yard but you can also buy them from the pet store. Savannah (9) was a cricket catching fool! Adah Mae (3) only caught a toad, now named Vitamaker (?), that I allowed her to keep.

Now I won't have to worry about running out of food and going to the petstore all Winter! How great is that? I will be saving money on feeding all these critters that I will describe below -

Kermit - tree frog We enjoy watching him in action.

Teeny- salamander. I regret to inform you that he died tonight before I finished this post & Jacob is taking it hard. This is a picture of him on my son's thumb. My heart was so broke for Jacob. He has never been one to cry over an animals death but this one got to him.

Tiny- another frog that is smaller than a penny! My son finds creatures of all kinds. I should have named him Noah.

Vitamaker- toad.

If we hadn't let the Box Turtle go

and if the Garter snakes hadn't gotten loose, in my house I might add. (No I never found them.) I would really be needing crickets!

By the way, who needs an elementary science book?

Oh, look at all your critters!! I love the teeny salamader. So cute. We find lots of geckos around here but we've never tried to catch one.

Sounds way more interesting then a science book.

Wow! What an idea. We had a toad for a brief stay but I let him go because we didn't have crickets to feed him. There are even some out in our yard. Hmmm. Me thinks we need to catch us some crickets for feeding critters.

I think I also need to do a blog about all the critters that either live with us or have passed throught the house.

Wow, it sounds like you have a very hands-on approach. One thing I have noticed from your posts is that you and your husband don't do things the 'average' way. My husband and I are a little more 'conventional', i.e. we do school with school books, etc... but hey, different people have different teaching styles! I am curious to know how you taught your children to read, though, without using school books. Could you please explain to me how you did it? Did you use the Bible? I am always fascinated by the different teaching styles in different homeschools. I am kind of in the middle... We use ACE, but I also like doing hands-on type of things. Thanks, Cassandra

I used Abeka curriculim to teach phonics. You have to have good phonics skills to have a successful reader. I would never do as much bookwork as I did before though! This was with my older two though. With my third one I think she might learn to read on her own because she seems to be naturally interested and wants to know how to read. Duing our "table time" if she is interested, which has been almost always, I will show her a letter and she then writes it on her notebook or paper.

Oct. 10, 2006 - Worms

My kids caught a toad at Grandma's yesterday and I'm trying to decide if we should keep him or free him. I surfed into your site which was especially cool since we are also homeschooling! I was checking out your "cricket maker" and thought you might be interested in our worm farm! I happen to use the worm factory, but there are can of worms and books like worms eat my garbage give ways of making bins with plain plastic bins. Anyway, I tossed a grasshopper in with Toad and it was missing today so I threw in 3 worms to see what would happen. I startled him and he screamed. Homeschooling has taught me about worm cocoons and screaming toads!! Who knew?!? How easy is it maintaining your toad? Or should I get/make and outdoor toad home? Did you have a good book from the library you'd recommend? I've also read online that some have poison sacs so I'm nervous about identifying. (We're in m idwest US).
Sorry about your salamander. Good luck with all your critters!
