My oldest daughter is kindred spirits with Anne Shirley. In the early '90's, when the Wonderworks version of Anne of Green Gables came out on PBS, I received two phone calls almost immediately: one from my mother-in-law, and one from my sister. They both began exactly the same way. Not "hello," mind you, but, "I've just seen R on tv!!!!" My oldest was Drama Queen and Diva before the words became part of the popular culture. When she was 4, they called her Shirley Temple. Same deal.
After she saw the movie, she immediately began her first journey through the book series. She became so entrenched in the "Anne" culture, she read everything else by LMM she could find. She even did her Master's thesis on Anne.
My sister-in-law and I used to spend a lot of time together, until I moved away. When I did so, we decided to correspond as b*som friends, like Anne and Diana. Our ground rules were that we would write as closely as possible in language and style as we could to that era. Her real name is Winnifred, so she was Winnie. My middle name is Annette, so I was Nettie.
Sounded easy enough--I could use good grammar. But did you ever try to write not using any slang expressions? I did a lot of editing in those letters. But they were very satisfying: of course, anything you put down on paper with a pen feels great. But using my brain to actually put something worthwhile on paper was definitely worth the effort.
I have purchased a fountain pen and Peacock Blue ink, as well as the Spencerian Penmanship series (tho' I haven't learned it yet). However, with the advent of email, my correspondence with Winnie has slackened.
I found something out during this *Anne* period. My mother-in-law's middle name is Anne. She finally confessed that she was christened Ann, but didn't like it, so added an 'e.' Now, she said, *we* have to decide how to put it on her gravestone!
Ah, poor, Winnie, I hope you don't feel I have deserted you.
I remain, your b*som friend, Nettie |
