• April 23, 2009 - Does this ever happen to you?

You moms always have great ideas. My two favorite from below are the timer idea and the visual barrier idea. Natalie is perfectly able to do the worksheets quickly, but is just in a bad habit of day dreaming. I'm also glad I'm not the only one.

Can anyone tell me why my daughter, who is perfectly good at math, takes like an hour or an hour and a half doing her daily math worksheets - that if I were to verbally ask her the questions of - she would be done in like 20 minutes or less?? She has no problem with the concepts, gets most every answer right, and whatever the math curriculum it is the same. We have conversations about the longer it takes you to do your work, the less time we have for fun stuff...but...

Maybe I should do it orally...lots of Charlotte Mason people do it this way - but 1) it's a break from me having to figure out what the next thing she needs to do is or from reading to her, and 2) well, shouldn't she learn to stay on task?

Also, math is the most challenging, but this comes up with every unsupervised activity.

I hear often enough about people's frustrations with the area of staying on task, but are any of you on the other side? How have you taught your children to stay on task?

April 23, 2009 - Untitled Comment Hi Cathy! My middle child (she's 8) is also very good at math and science. But she takes forever getting her math worksheets done, too. I've just come to believe it's because she's more of a tactile learner. When we cook or do anything that has to do with measuring or hands-on math she shines, otherwise it's moan and groan...moan and groan...that would be both of us :-).
Yes, I do believe our nation is where it is because we've compromised the Word of God. I think that as a whole, the Christian community has allowed to much that is not of God into our midsts (word ?). The enemy has been subtle and deceived so many of our own that we now see a lack of leadership in the Church. Also (my own personal opinion here), I believe that we have become so fragmented doctorinely that we look like a bunch of school kids bickerring and fighting amongst ourselves about secondary church issues instead of getting serious about the Great Commission and evangelizing. I think when the church returns to her First Love and repents of buying into the lie that the Deceiver has sold to us, we will see a revival in our land (2 Chron. 7:14). This may sound far out, but I really believe there is a gluttonous spirit that has bound this nation. We have such a lust for more, more, more...whether it be food, clothes, larger houses, status, entertainment, whatever. Anyway, I hope I didn't just blow you away with all that. But I am saddened because there are just so many that need Jesus and I wish we (my self included) were all grieved more for them.
Thanks for your question at my place concerning all this. You're right, so many don't seem to care and I think that grieves the Father. How can He bless us as a nation when we don't even honor Him anymore?
Heavy stuff huh. Blessings to you and yours Cathy, I'm glad you're here. ~Julie~

April 24, 2009 - Untitled Comment Hi Cathy,

My oldest daughter used to take very long on math. Her problem was distractability. Her mind would wander to other noises in the house, the window, or just internal thoughts. For her, it's ADD and she works much better at a table instead of on her bed. She does better now, but still wanders sometimes - especially when unsupervised. She's now on meds too.

Have you considered letting her work half the problems on the page? I do that sometimes - especially when I'm confident they understand the concepts thoroughly. Then, we move on to the next lesson instead of continuing to practice a concept already mastered.

Good luck. I know how frustrating this can be!

April 25, 2009 - Untitled Comment HI Cathy,
I'm sure almost every mom that homeschools can relate :)
Have you ever tried setting a timer? Like the kind you buy at Target, a kitchen timer? If you think that the worksheet should take 30 minutes max, set the timer at that. Tell her your timing her today, and encourage her to see if she can beat the timer. Maybe offer her a prize (a donut, or whatever you give out in your house as incentive) if she's able to do it. I find that if I set a motivator when their first learning the concept of finishing something in a certain time frame, they stayed focused. Eventually, it can become a habit.

April 25, 2009 - I have one just like that. I have to sit with her and keep her on task or she would take all day. I think attentiveness is the next habit we have to work on with her! I'm interested in seeing what others write.

April 25, 2009 - Untitled Comment Beautiful will slow down on her math to a crawl. I find she does this when she has the math concepts down pat and is bored. She is ADHD and gets bored, distracted easily. Another thing is are you having problem with visual distractions or audio distractions? For visual try a cardboard display board around her area, goes up and comes down quick. If audio is a problem try ear plugs or ear muffs. I hope this helps.

God bless

I homeschool my three sweet daughters on our little farm, plus live along side my sweet step-daughter, my husband, our cat, our dog, some cows, and some chickens... God has done a work in me bringing my heart closer and closer to my family. And I feel so blessed.
