Hey, just to let you all know the calf is doing great. Yesterday we headgated her Momma and walked the calf over to nurse. She nursed well, but still looked tired afterwards. I had been reading about calves being dehydrated and so we tubed her with a salt water/baking soda mixture to help hydrate her. By morning she looked spunky! She was up nursing herself and nursed three out of four quadrants dry. We headgated her Mom again and put her on her mom for the remaining quadrant. Plus she was up jumping around tonight! We will still need to watch her carefully for the next three weeks.
Little Ann
I think we are going to name her "Little Ann". Do you remember "Where The Red Fern Grows"? Our kids love that movie. We were reminding the kids she won't be little for long. I still have a black cow I couldn't come up with a name for. The cows we've named this year were Ruby and Jewel - Marion and Blackberry. This one's Mom's name is Dora Ann. So the name kind of matches.

I'm so glad she is doing better. You are learning a lot, aren't you?
How about Molly for a name. It is my overall favorite girl pet name.

May 1, 2009 - Oklahoma needs a huge absorbent towel! ...and we're expecting more!!!
I'm still so impressed with the color of those calves. I love that red! I think the name Little Ann is fitting for her and she'll always be Little Ann to you guys even when she's 1000 lbs :-).
BTW, my girls bawled when we watched "Where the Red Fern Grows". This type of movie follows the same genre as "Old Yeller" and "The Yearling" all of which we've seen and bawled while viewing...sniff sniff, could someone hand me a tissue.
Alright, alright maybe our hills are a bit puny compared to yours but hey with all the rain and moisture we've been getting lately our average annual rainfall amount is quickly becomming more comparable to yours :-). No, I'm serious, and we are still expecting more. I can't get in my garden as it's quickly turning into a bog garden! But, I'm praising Him in all things and trying not to complain.
Slip sliding away and blessings! Julie

Glad your calf is doing well. Little Ann sounds like a perfect name, esp. in light of the mama's name.
Have a blessed week!
