 Apr. 23, 2008 - Backyard Nature

You don't have to go very far to discover all the wonders of God's creation here in our little part of the world!
We have truly been enjoying the warm weather along with God's awesome display of nature right in our back yard. We have saw many different kinds of birds, bird nests, butterflies, blooming trees and bushes, flowers budding, and mushrooms growing! Today my daughter and her friend found Morell mushrooms growing at the edge of the woods around the rocks. Truly awesome! I can't believe I've never noticed these before! You can see them on my photo display across the top of my blog, enjoy! Now, go out in your back yard or near the woods in your own area and see if you can find some of your own!!

Apr. 21, 2008 - Looking Back, and Ahead

The school year is coming to a close as we finish our reading and other curriculum for the seventh grade year. We have enjoyed reading all the Living Books designed into our Westward  and Onward study written by homeschool mom Dorian Holt. Here is a list of some of the books we read this year:

Streams to the River, River to the Sea
Lassie Come Home
Justin Morgan Had a Horse
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch
American Tall Tales
Strawberry Girl
Old Yeller
A Gathering of Days
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Caddie Woodlawn
Bound for Oregon

As I look ahead and plan for next year, the year before High School, I am thinking of using the Progeny Press Study Guides. Has anyone used these and how did you like them?
I am certain I want us to use the Living Books approach. If anyone has any other suggestions for curriculum for older grades using Living Books I would love to hear from you!
Looking back, I am very pleased with the accomplishments this year.
Using Saxon 87 has been a struggle at times but I feel certain she has gained an understanding of the math concepts. We only finished half the book and if I don't change my mind and find something that is a better fit for her we will continue to move along in Saxon 87 using the DIVE CD.
We have also enjoyed the Apologia General Science and will continue with Physical Science next year. We hope to form a study group with friends in our homeschool group, looking forward to this.
Our homeschool group consists of around 25 families who meet together twice a month with Club Meetings for the children. We plan activities which revolve around the books, Keepers at Home (girls book) and Contenders of the Faith (boys book). We also have scheduled field trips and Mom's Meetings once a month. It has been a very interesting year, far less structured than previous years. We are making plans for a Leadership Team, which will consist of 5 or 6 moms who will make the schedule for the year and plan the activities before everyone in the group meets for the year. We have found it to be very difficult for a group of 25 moms to try and plan the year. So many opinions, ideas, etc. that nothing is accomplished. This is what happened last year.
Is there anyone who has experience in a small homeschool group setting with similar experiences? I would love to hear about your experience!
I will post more about our school year later.

 Mar. 31, 2008 - The Song Sparrow

The Song Sparrow

He does not wear a Joseph's coat of many colors, smart and gay
His suit is Quaker brown and gray, with darker patches at his throat.
And yet of all the well-dressed throng, not one can sing so brave a song.
It makes the pride of looks appear a vain and foolish thing to hear
In "Sweet, sweet, sweet, very merry cheer."

A lofty place he does not love, he sits by choice and well at ease
In hedges and in little trees, tht stretch their slender arms above
The meadow brook; and then he sings till all the field with pleasure rings:
And so he tells in every ear, that lowly homes to heaven are near
In "Sweet, sweet, sweet, very merry cheer."
                                                         ~Henry van Dyke

Happy Spring! We are finally experiencing some warm weather and the birds are singing sweetly outside my door as I type this.
Oh, how I love spring! So looking forward to walking barefoot in the grass and starting our little garden soon.
Nature all around is blooming. Some of the pictures on by sidebar are ones I took today outside. The trees are budding and the blooms are beautiful colors.
We are reading from the Anna Botsford Comstock nature book, Handbook of Nature Study, as we prepare and enjoy for coming days of summer.

Mar. 20, 2008 - We have New Babies

                   Easter Chicks
     "Hershey and Kiwi"

Mamaw and Papaw purchased baby chicks for Allison and her cousin yesterday. Oh, how cute they are!  I will take more pictures today with her included. Last night we just got a picture of the chicks in their box since they were a bit afraid and hadn't yet settled into their new environment. She has been a wonderful little mommy taking care of the sweet babies. Feeding, watering, placing a warm blanket inside the box and worrying over them have all reminded me of my first experiences as a new mommy!
The sun is shinning and we are looking forward to warm weather today.

 Mar. 13, 2008 - Revive Me Lord

Oh, how I love God's Word!
I praise Him for placing a deep love for studying his Word!
We have made it a practice to read in the Psalms every day!
What a blessing!

Psalm 119

Blessed are the undefiled in the way,
Who walk in the law of the Lord!
2 Blessed are those who keep His testimonies,
Who seek Him with the whole heart!

25 Revive me according to Your word

37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things,
And revive me in Your way.

40 Behold, I long for Your precepts,
Revive me in Your righteousness.

107 I am afflicted very much;
Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.

149 Hear my voice according to Your lovingkindness;
O Lord, revive me according to Your justice.

154 Plead my cause and redeem me;
Revive me according to Your word.

156 Great are Your tender mercies, O Lord;
Revive me according to Your judgments.

159 Consider how I love Your precepts;
Revive me, O Lord, according to Your lovingkindness.

160 The entirety of Your word is truth,
And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

 Mar. 3, 2008 - Quiet Time in God's Word

Therefore humble yourselves under the might hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
                          1 Peter 5:6-7

As I was reading my Bible this morning this is the scripture that I came to. We have been doing a study of heaven in our Sunday School class and many verses come from 1 Peter so I had been reading there. As I began to read, I came down to verse 8,

8Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

As I read the notes in my Bible this is what it says:

Be sober means to be self-disciplined, to think rationally and not foolishly.
Be vigilant means to be alert to the spiritual pitfalls of life and take appropriate steps to make certain that we do not stumble.
your adversary: Satan is our avowed enemy. He never ceases from being hostile toward us; he is constantly accusing us before God.

We must come daily before the Lord seeking His strength and guidance for our life because Satan is real and truly is like a roaring lion. Do we really have to look very far to see this? I think not!
As I read further, I see in verse 10 the wonderful peace I can experience:

10But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, and strengthen, and settle you.
11To Him be the glory and dominion forever and ever, Amen.

 Feb. 25, 2008 - God's Plans

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive.
              Jeremiah 29:11-14

Praise God that He knows my future and will listen when I call upon His name! I've truly been calling upon Him lately. Many needs: physical and emotional strength,  patience, love, and the list goes on.
God has answered many prayers and continues to answer daily.

My first priority is my family and the past few weeks have been spent caring for my dad in his recovery and my own family here at home. Driving back and forth from my home to his. Laundry, dishes, not much cleaning, etc.
I'm so thankful the Lord gave me insight along my life's journey into living a disciplined life and teaching me to die to self as I read and studied the scriptures over the years. All those wonderful Bible studies I've attended and the "pouring over" the scriptures have been such a blessing the past few weeks. I've had to set aside my own agenda and focus on the needs of others.
I can't say it's been fun or easy every day but God has truly opened my eyes and touched my heart in so many ways. Without Him I would be pretty worn down at this point. However, He has given me the strength and energy to do more than I ever thought possible. From small details of helping my father with an extremely deep wound, bandaging and caring for this, to emotional battles I've faced, feeling as if I've failed many times.
God is my refuge and present help in troubles times! I can't quote the scripture but it just came to my mind and I have experienced his help!!
Whatever you are going through, God is there for you, waiting for you! He will give you ALL you need, only trust in Him. We must have FAITH to believe the WORD of God in it's entirety.
I've missed blogging here but I've kept my sanity by sewing and quilting and journaling at Drucilla's Stitches, a blog I created in memory of my grandmother.
I will continue to blog here about homeschooling and our life's journey as much as possible. For now, God has other plans for our life, plans I must accept and follow. I'm trusting Him along the way.
In Love,
Tina

 Feb. 12, 2008 - Home Sweet Home

It's great to be home. It seems the last two weeks have been quite crazy around here. Last week my dad came home from the hospital and I stayed with him during the day while my sis stayed at night. Most days my daughter came with me and we did school as well as we could during the day.
My dad had been having health problems and we thought maybe it was his gallbladder. Boy, were we all wrong. As soon as we took him to the ER and they did the EKG it showed he was having a heart attack! Wow, you talk about surprised. Things went rather quickly from that point. They transfered him by ambulance to a hospital that specializes in Cardiac Care and the surgeon explained that his right artery was completely blocked. However, on the way he coded and they had to shock him to bring him back. My dear sis was riding in the ambulance and was terribly upset by the time I arrived at the ER.
Things went well during the angioplast and placing the stents. It was later that day that things went wrong. Dad's blood pressure began to drop drastically and by evening he was in serious condition. They whisk him to surgery after finding that he was bleeding and they couldn't stop the bleeding. His blood would not clot and he was in danger. It was  a very long night of waiting. Early the next morning we learned he was stabilized and he began to slowly wake up. The doctor had explained that we were to expect the worst and hope for the best. He told us he may not wake up, could have neurological damage, etc. As I said, waiting and checking in on him to speak to him during the first few days was stressful. However, we could see the progress each day. God's love and grace was like a blanket for our family as each day came and went, moving into the next. Friends and family came to the ICU and sat with us, bringing our family gifts and food, giving us words of comfort, prayers, and love. I can't express how much this meant to us during the week of waiting and trusting the Lord for a miracle.
My dad continued to recover and he is home and doing well. The doctor himself said it was the Lord who reach down and touched his life. He said, "the Lord isn't finished with you yet." The nurses called him their "miracle patient." To me it's AMAZING GRACE!!
My dad isn't a believer and I pray this will touch the deepest part of his heart and open his eyes to see JESUS!!
I would like to thank all my blog friends who have left comments and prayed for my dad. Please keep him on your prayer list for a full recovery and his salvation!
I will add a few pictures of what we have been doing tomorrow.

 Feb. 3, 2008 - God's Love and Mercy

We are praising God for His Love and Mercy this week. My dad had a heart attack on Monday and we've been at the hospital all week.  I will be able to post the entire story later but I'm on my way back to the hospital and in a hurry. He's doing well, please pray for him! Hug your parents and tell them you love them today! Take the Time!

Heart of the Matter

There's a new online magazine for homeschoolers called, Heart of the Matter ." Each Friday they will feature a different topic and this week's them is Tips and Tricks.  If you have tips you would like to share just hop on over and join in!

Our Homeschool Tips

~Keep the Lord Jesus first and include Him in your day! Read God's Word FIRST and have prayer for your day.

~Scheduling is the key but keep your eyes open for God's hand in your day! He may send someone your way who needs you! When I first began homeschooling I became very discouraged and needed encouragement from other moms.

~In order to homeschool you need to stay HOME. I thought I needed to involve my girls in activities and we were running around like crazy! Looking back I see the most important time was teaching them skills from home. Daily chores, cooking, planning meals, sewing, etc.

~Getting involved in a Homeschool group was very important for me, MOM. I need the support of other moms who are likeminded!! This is still very important today and the moms in our group are some of my best friends.

~We have grown so much!!

G - Go to God in prayer daily (John 15:7)
R - Read God's Word daily (Acts 17:11)
O- Obey God moment by moment (John 14:21)
W - Witness for Christ by your life and words (Matt. 4:19)
T - Trust God for every detail of your life (1 Peter 5:7)
H - Holy Spirit - allow Him to control and empower your daily life (Galatians 5: 16-17)

My sweet daughter went shopping and can you believe she was thinking of her mom? She knows how much I love the Mast General Store and how I've admired these dishes for quite some time. They will fit perfectly in my kitchen corner cabinet with the glass door.

I have been stitching and admiring quilts in the new QUILT magazine I purchased a few days ago. I'm trying to decide which quilt I will begin next. This will be for my oldest dd and it must be easy enough for me to complete without becoming discouraged and never finish!
This is what I'm looking at thus far. It's not too difficult but we will have to design our own because she wants to use it for her bed and this is for a lap quilt size.

I decided to experiment with the applique since I'm a bit rusty on this stitching. Here's what I've come up with with some scraps I have on hand. This is only one of the six blocks it will take and the borders are pinwheels in mixed colors.

 Jan. 14, 2008 - Beginning Our Week

Beginning our new week of school with a new unit, titled, Growing Tensions, using the book, A Gathering of Days, by Joan W. Blos.

This is a picture of our stack of books we will be using for this unit. Some of these we will select portions to read as there will not possibly be enough time to read each one in it's entirety.
Some of the topics we will cover: slavery, Eli Whitney, American Inventor, Underground Railroad, Native Americans, and more.

The weather is cold again, burrrr! Snow flakes were falling briefly today as I carried groceries into the house. I really enjoy winter during winter, don't you? I don't care much for 70 deg. days in January! LOL!
Perfect day to snuggle under a blanket and have a nice hot cup of tea or cocoa huh? Dream on, girl! There is still laundry to do and dinner to prepare! Well, at least I did have my cup of raspberry tea while I was writing this post.

Wishing for snow,
Tina

 Dec. 31, 2007 - Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

I am very thankful for the much needed time off from daily schedules and routines but I am so glad to get back in the swing of things here in our little home. I am very UNorganized by nature but have learned over the past few years that my life runs much more smoothly if I strive to be organized and consistent. LOL!
For example: Today I received news that my friend whose baby was born premature and in ICU wasn't doing well. Of course I wanted to visit her at the hospital and began to rush around getting myself ready. I was very tempted to leave the dirty dishes in the sink and clean dishes in the dishwasher but it took me only a few minutes to realize I would much rather come home to a nice clean kitchen! This didn't take long at all and saved me the guilt of having a messy kitchen. Now, in the past I would not only have left dirty dishes but clothes strewn everywhere, unmade beds, etc. Yeah, can you believe it?!?

We decided to start school today and had a very good day.
Continued using all the same curriculum and even added a few goodies.
Abeka Literature 7th grade
First Aid for YOUths
Poetry from The Harp and Laurel Wreath
Bible from Bob Jones Workbook Level A

Also covered history, math, and reading today~

I enjoyed our devotions so much today.
Theme: JOY
Scripture: Matthew 5:1-16 (The Beatitudes)
Jesus explains to his disciples how a person can experience joy. Jesus presented eight qualities or actions that would make a person happy. He began each one by saying "blessed," which means happy or joyful.
The first four have to do with our relationship to God.
1)poor in spirit
2)one who mourns
3)meek
4)one who hungers and thirsts after righteousness

The second four have to do with our relationship with others.

5)show mercy
6)be pure in heart
7)be a peacemaker
8)accept persecution

To be the kind of person Jesus describes in this passage is to bring honor and glory to God!!
Another reason is that it influences others for the Lord. The Lord used two illustrations to show how we can be an influence to others.
First, we are to be like SALT in the world. Salt adds flavor to food. Knowing God gives flavor or purpose to life. We have purpose in our life when we know the Lord Jesus Christ as our savior! We bring the message of salt to the lives of others.
The second illustration Christ used was LIGHT. The world is a dark place spiritually. It is up to Christians to to light the way to the Lord and His salvation.
Joy does not comes from how you look, what kind of house you live in, or how many friends you have. It comes from having a right relationship to God through Christ. Once we become a believer and accept Christ we will begin to turn our attention to others and less to ourselves. Meeting the needs of others and helping those in need. That is what makes the Christian JOYFUL!!

 Dec. 19, 2007 - Faith Walk

Quote for the Day
The only really blind person at Christmastime is he who has not Christmas in his heart.
~Helen Keller

Verse for the Day
By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me.
~Psalm 42:8

I am so excited when I find a really great blog to share with all my blog friends!
I want to share two great blogs and a super website with a great Bible Study going on!

As you can see, I have placed an icon in my sidebar to share the devotional series, Faith Walking, hosted by Faith Lifts. Please take a minute to check it out, I'm sure you'll love it.

OK, so the first blog I want to share with you is MaryBeth Whalen's blog at Cheaper by The Half Dozen.
MaryBeth is a writer for the Proverbs 21 Ministries and also has an e-book of her own, titled, JOY,  that you will want to purchase for the holidays! I have been following her blog for quite some time and enjoy the encouragement, ideas, and inspiration she shares.

Next, you will also find encouragement and inspiration in this blog,
Extravagant Grace This is where I found the Bible Study I am looking forward to beginning very soon.

Praising God for these ladies for taking the time to share the gift the Lord has blessed them with.

Today's Agenda:
My two nephews are spending the day with us and we are making sugar cookies and decorating after they cut them out. The dough is in the refrigerator at the moment and we are waiting. This is another Christmas Tradition in our home.

The next few days will be very busy as we finish our last minute shopping and making a little more of those tasty chocolate covered pecans! Whew, they were gone in a flash, my family loves them!

Another very easy recipe they like is Peanut Butter Ritz dipped in white chocolate! (This is actually called white candy melts made by Wilton)These are so easy and yummy.
Take the holiday Ritz snowflake shapes or regular, and make peanut butter crackers, (peanut butter and two crackers placed together)then just dip in melted white chocolate. Using two pans or a double boiler and adding just a bit of parafin wax to thin the white chocolate which I get at Wal Mart in the cake decorating section in little bags or Michaels sells it.

Both the Ritz Crackers and Chocolate Covered Pecans make great gifts in little tins or decorative boxes for Christmas. I usually make a double batch of using for gift giving because my family love these.

Merry Christmas!! and God Bless!

 Dec. 18, 2007 - Christ's Birth

Quote for the day:

The finest Christmas gift is not the one that costs the most money but the one that carries the most love.

~Henry Van Dyke

BELLS OF CHRISTMAS

Why do the bells

Of Christmas ring?

Why do little children sing?

Once a lovely, shining star,

Seen by shepherds from afar,

Gently moved until its light

Made a manger’s cradle bright.

There a darling baby lay,

Pillowed soft upon the hay;

And its mother sung

And smiled,

“This is Christ, the holy child!”

Therefore bells for

Christmas ring,

Therefore little children sing.

      Eugene Field

Christ’s Birth

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”

So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called his name JESUS.

 Matthew 1:18-24

Laundry: Goal is to finish laundry today, 4 loads.

Baking: Chocolate covered pecans, yummy!

Bible: Continue reading in my personal Bible Study, Believing God by Beth Moore. Get caught up so I can watch the video tomorrow.

Other: Get the last of the Christmas cards addressed and in the mail, wrapping the last few gifts, balance check book, look over gift list and make grocery list.

I have enjoyed browsing other blogs for creative ideas for Christmas recipes, crafts, etc. If you're like me you hate to throw away Christmas cards so here's a great idea for reusing your Christmas cards. Proverbs 22:6 Academy has 10 Ideas for this! Check it out.

 Dec. 11, 2007 - Giving

This time of year can be very stressful with so many things to do before Christmas. Shopping, baking, cleaning, wrapping gifts, etc. It seems the list is never ending. I really like the list that cakeandcam has on her blog for less stress during the holidays! Reading over this list helped me to re-evaluate my priorities for the next couple of weeks.

We met at our local Wal Mart with the youth from church to purchase gifts for needy families last night. We had the best time picking out clothes, shoes, socks, and a few toys for these precious little ones. We divided into pairs and headed out to shop till we dropped, then we shopped for groceries for each one. This was the first time to participate in gift giving for many of the children. They had so much fun! We are praying the Lord will help them see Jesus in our "giving". We have the opportunity in doing this to talk with them about Jesus and why we are helping them. There is such Joy in giving!

 Dec. 5, 2007 - Homeschool Open House

“Holiday Homeschool Open House 2007”

Our family begins celebrating during Thanksgiving and we continue with many traditions and activities that are dear to our heart.

We have been especially sentimental this year since my father-in-law had heart surgery and this has touched our hearts!! I actually began making candy and bread earlier than ever this year.

Celebrating the birth of Christ  - We try and keep this our focus as much as possible . This is the reason we celebrate Christmas!

Since they were very young my girls have been blessed to be a part of a Christmas Play each year at our church. This is very special and helps them as they interact with children of all ages. Memorization of play parts and/or scripture, public speaking, organization, music, scenery, and much more are just the tip of what they are learning from this experience.

IN the past my girls have taken piano and usually were part of a piano recital with such rich and meaningful Christmas music. They were very excited and also nervous but we all enjoyed it so much.

Christmas Caroling  at a nursing home with both our church and our homeschool group has been a fun time this year! Delivering fruit baskets to those who are shut in and elderly in our community are also a part of our church Christmas outreach.

Family Traditions – Our family loves to get together for celebrations and we started off this year by making Christmas candy. We made chocolate covered peanut butter balls, peanut butter fudge, and chocolate covered pretzels. Yummy! The kids helped roll out the peanut butter balls and enjoyed videoing my mom and sister as we made the candy. We had such a great time!

This year I have wanted our focus to be on “The Birth of Christ” even more than ever so we are celebrating Advent. Today was the first day and we have read over a wonderful Advent which you can find at http://miikogibson.com/advent_study.htm. This is so wonderful for all ages! I’m so excited to share this with the entire family!

BLOGGER FRIEND SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT #11

The assignment this week is "praying for needs." Visit classmates' blogs and let them know you are praying for them and to list requests of your own.

This week our Homeschool Group met together for our Christmas Party and we not only had lots of laughter and fun but also tears as we shared prayer requests. I would like to share a few of those requests with you.

1. Mom in our group whose son may be going to Iraq soon. He was sent to Georgia at the last minute as he was attending school here in our town.

2. Family in our group who is going through a very difficult time. The Lord knows the situation.

3. Family who is experiencing fear and confusion (from Satan) as they battle the side effects from the medications he is taking from seizures. This is their first year homeschooling.

4. My father-in-law - continued healing from heart surgery.

5. Our family - That we may continue to be a light in this dark world during this wonderful Christmas Season.

6. Family members who are lost.

 Nov. 30, 2007 - Winter Poetry

Stopping by Woods on A Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village, though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little house must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

Robert Frost

 Nov. 29, 2007 - Power Verses

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy, huh? I know I am!

Lord, please help me to look to you (your WORD) for my strength and courage.

I really needed these power verses today as I received them today in my email from Proverbs 31 Ministries. Praise God for these lovely ladies who take the time to write!!

Power Verses:

Job 28:10-11, “He tunnels through the rock; his eyes see all its treasures.  He searches the sources of the rivers and brings hidden things to light.”  (NIV)

Psalm 143:9, “Rescue me from my enemies, O Lord, for I hide myself in you.”  (NIV)

Psalm  32:7, “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”  (NIV)

Today I'm using my Home Journal Planner to continue our plans for a wonderful Christmas including JESUS as the center of our celebration.
