I used to say that homeschooling was our lifestyle but now I say our lifestyle is our homeschool!
Lifestyle Homeschool is about discipling our children; about character training, about everyday life giving learning opportunities, about Bible study and practical skills. Your lifestyle will provide the experiences that will give your children a rich education.
Apr. 17, 2009 - Conference session: On Fire for Truth – Who is your family listening to?
This morning we were challenged with the thought are we soaked in the world or soaked in the word?
The world is full of messages that saturate our spirit.Do we feed on that or do we feed on the Word.
The world tells us:
·that we need more material stuff,
·that we need to know all the gory details of sin in the world (the News),
·that we take our values from our peers and the family is not significant,
·that busyness is necessary to be successful,
·that dads aren’t capable of anything other than working and paying the bills,
·that nudity is okay,
·that we need to look after #1 (me).
Word gives us a totally different message.
We can soak in the World by
·Watching TV / DVDs
·Internet viewing
·Newspaper, magazine reading
·Friendship and conversation with peers
·Being aware of advertsing
We can soak in the Word by:
·Memorisation
·Absorption (reading 1 chapter for 30 days – get it into your heart)
·Visualisation – story telling and singing scripture
·Verbalisation – repeating, retelling
Do I have the word of God in my heart to the point that it flows out of my mouth naturally?
The next question I need to ask myself is what do my children listen to – are they listening to the worldly influences more than they listen to the biblical influences? Is the Word of God established so much in their hearts that they talk about it throughout the day?
That reminds me of something Ken Ham wrote in a Creation magazine today.
How come Australians love Vegemite, where as Americans can't stand the taste of it? (stick with me!) Australians grow up with the taste of Vegemite, and grow up acquiring the taste of it, where as Americans don't acquire the taste of it, so when they taste it they don't like it - at all!!
In the same way, parents need to give their children the Word and the Lord's Way at a young age, giving them a 'taste' for it - like David prayed, "My soul thirsts for you." One of the reasons I love Colin Buchanan's work is because it has given me a foundation for my faith. I've grown up listening to songs sung straight from scripture, which feeds the soul.
I wasn't 'saved from the depths of the grave' or anything dramatic, but I do have a Christian Heritage. My Mum and Dad (you!) have fed me with the Christian faith.
A place to share the things that happen in my family. The longer I homeschool the quicker I realise that these are not just everyday family happenings - they are the experiences that are educating my children.

Be a Deliberate Parent
We need to know where we want to take our family, and how we are going to get there. We need to be very deliberate in our training of our children.
Homemaking
In amongst the parenting, the training, the homeschooling I must remember that I am also a homemaker.
