Aug. 14, 2007 Time for School!
Tomorrow is the first day of school! DH will be teaching 4th grade again at Neighborhood Christian School where J1 will be in 6th grade and J3 will be in 1st grade. J2 and I will persevere at home.
J2 will be in 4th grade - with the exception of the subjects that are directly affected by learning disabilities. Here is what we are planning to do for our school this year:
Bible - we will be listening to an audiobook format of the Bible and then J2 will narrate (ala Charlotte Mason) daily.
Math - at recommendation of our consultant Sharon we are not proceeding with Saxon math this year. J2 loves math - and likes to do it independently - but Saxon math requires more and more reading. Which means that he would need me to read it to him. So, we are going to use Modern Curriculum Press’s mathematics this year.
Science - Elementary Apologia’s “Exploring Creationg with Astronomy”
History - California History with Beautiful Feet and field trips with Daddy’s class. Beautiful feet is a literature-based approach to history.
Language Arts - This is where J2’s learning disabilities hit us the hardest. We are using some older curriculum and going as slowly as necessary. We are going to create games using flashcards of our hardest words and steadily work our way through it. J2 is still writing a book about pirates and he’s eager to get back to it. When I say ‘writing’ I mean that he tells me what happens and we develop those ideas into complete sentences and thoughts on our whiteboard. He copies it down into his notebook and illustrates the section.
That’s pretty much the bones of our education this next year. I look forward to it and dread it at the same time. |

Nov. 13, 2006 Technological Fun!
My sweet hubby came home from the store with a gift to support my new workout schedule - well, the out of water part of it! ;) A small MP3 player! I want to download a book or two at http://www.audible.com but all of a sudden, I'm not sure what I want to listen to! I'm thinking a classic - but I'm more of a cozy mystery or historical romance type of gal. So, tell me what you'd download if you were in my shoes!! Help! I need ideas! :)
This can be considered homeschooling if it's educating myself - right? lol

Nov. 5, 2006 Cleaning House
After today, I'm going to try and keep my homeschooling blog and my personal blog seprarate. I thought to move all posts not schooling related (knitting, grief, etc) to my other blog: Journaling Back to Joy at http://www.osbornz.net/amy but that task is a little daunting! lol
But from this day forward - I hope you will come read about the other parts of our life there. :)
Also, check out http://cornerstoneacademy.osbornz.net for more of our favorite homeschool links.

Nov. 5, 2006 Special Education: Writing
|
Ive been meaning to tell you all about the meeting
I went to last month in San Jose. Its a monthly meeting for parents who are
homeschooling kids who have been diagnosed with special education needs. The director of the group is Sharon Hensley
who wrote Home Schooling Children With Special Needs.
Last month our meeting was about writing. We spent most of the evening talking about
handwriting and a bit about composition.
First she challenged us to consider why we teach
handwriting. In fact, she asked Why are
homeschoolers so worried about handwriting?
There was much discussion
and it boiled down for many of us that we
recognize that our children (and thus us) are judged by their handwriting. But in this technological age is it
dying? What is more important? Getting ideas out in a reasonable manner or
have it be nice looking?
For many students this isnt an either/or
matter. But for children with special
needs, it can be. Many moms shared that they
are only teaching cursive in order for their children to (1) be able to read it
themselves and (2) to be able to sign their names. Other moms shared that they had success moving
to typing.
After an exercise meant to show us how many of our
children felt when we ask them to write and then hover over them, we came up with
the following actions to help us:
1)
Provide time (without nagging, but not to waste of
course)
2)
Find something to praise (every day/assignment)
3)
Balance (to be honest I cant remember what this
meant lol)
4)
Move towards typing as he gets older
5)
Flexible fit your student, not the curriculum
6)
Coloring is good practice for manual strengthening
Then we moved to composition my biggest
concern. Sharon explained that our students learn what
a sentence is by copying, then dictation before they can compose a sentence of
their own. And she suggested we ask them
to compose less than a sentence to start.
**Remember if you are not dealing with a child with special needs, your
child might do this in a matter of minutes as opposed to days/months/etc**
After they can write a good sentence, then you can
go to paragraphs then more complex paragraphs and then essays.
A few products she recommended to help us:
Apple Tree Ive started to use this with
J2. His disabilities are all in the
language arena. He loves it and I do
too! Its taking the steps of creating a
sentence and breaking them into smaller steps.
First hes adding the correct word, then phrase and finally hes doing
the sentence. Here is a link: http://www.proedinc.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idProduct=1559
When its time to move onto paragaphs, she
recommends a product called FourSquare.(I think this link is it: http://www.teachinglearning.com/foursquare/writing_method.php)
As my student isnt that far along I didnt
take many notes on it.
Hope this helps someone!

Oct. 6, 2006 Knitting Projects
Thought it was time to share a bit about my knitting. I like to have several projects going at once in case I get bored or frustrated! ;-)
1) Here is my progress on my never ending sweater!
The back is done and one side is about 2/3 done. I've unknit quite a bit lately so this is now at the bottom of my knitting bad! Bad Yarn!! :-) I'm starting to worry that it might be too small! I'm doing my best to ignore that little fear though.
A couple of things I'm learning from this experience - stockinette sweaters are BORING. Just because the pattern says to knit one thing and then the next...there is no reason I can't knit them both at the same time! I'm seriously considering the sleeves in magic loop - maybe even two at a time - to speed this up! I want this done before Christmas!
2) Here is a cable scarf I found here - the Irish Hiking Scarf - I'm doing it in Black Lion Brand Microspun. Very Soft! I'm just knitting in a rib pattern around the neck area so it will hang better. Wish you could see the detail!
3) The 2nd baby kimono (from Mason Dixon Knitting book) - this one is in stockinette. Since I worked on it yesterday when I was coming down with this cold/flu/ickiness I now have to frog about 3 rows...sigh...
4) I pulled this one out of the drawer - the Lost Points Shawl - I looooove these colors:
5) Finally, even though I am sick today - my friend Ruth asked to use my washing machine to felt her bag. I decided the worse thing to happen wasn't going to be as bad as never felting the two I had done. So here is our results -
Mine are the two in back - the purple one turned out so nice that I think I'm going to give it to my niece - I hope she likes it because I really want to keep it!

Oct. 3, 2006 Our School Seal
After reading Jay Ryan's article in the Spring 2006 copy of TOS "Boy Scounting and the Homeschool" (pg 96-101) I started to consider this option for my boys...mainly for the one I homeschool. Last week was our first den meeting - a tour of the local police station. Below you will find pictures of our day. I can't tell you how excited I am about scouting! It will really enhance our homeschooling! I hope to share more about it in the next few weeks! If you are wondering about scouting and homeschooling - check our Jay's article or check back here for more about our experience!
Listening well A real jail! Scouts gone bad? Nah, just having fun! :-) Great listening J2! Posing with the Chief Meeting the local K9 unit - not getting too close though!

Sep. 18, 2006 A Great Day (so far ;)
Today has been great! I got up late....but it didn't seem to create too much havoc. I got Dh and J1 & J3 off to school and then J2 and I got busy. He did about 20 min of the Study Dog program while I got organized. Then we started flashcard practice, he read to me and did his comprehension workbook. Then math, handwriting and grammar. Then we worked on the Scout promise, salute and handshake.
After we finished school I created a menu and a grocery list and we got all our shopping done for the next two weeks (not counting trips to restock the produce - we can never make it two weeks for produce)!
And, now I have time to work for a few hours while he does Legos and plays. Then dinner and a homeschool support group meeting tonight.
I love days like today! I feel like I've accomplished something and am in control of my environment. It sure beats all those days when I feel like the world is spinning out of control and I'm hanging on by my fingertips!

Sep. 11, 2006 Happy Birthday J2!
|
For most people this day is full of memories - not good ones. For our family this day is a celebration of our son. Today is his birthday! We are blessed to have you be part of our family! Memories of you... - The smallest baby I'd ever seen - with hair that stuck straight up in the air. Later we found out your foster mom would put a cap on you to try and get it to stay down...but it didn't really work!
- I remember the first day you came into our home. There was so much chaos and your foster mom was trying to give me your schedule and tell me important things and all I could do was look at you.
- Your first Christmas, we put you under our Christmas tree. You eyes would grow huge as you would watch the lights twinkling.
- I remember you sleeping in your swing as I desperately tried to wind it up without waking you! You slept so little those first months.
- I remember waking up and coming out to find you almost totally nude on the changing table with an exhausted Grammy saying "he's happier this way" and it was true!
- I remember trying to bundle you as you screamed and screamed due to hyperstimulation. Pacing a dark room, whispering quietly to you until you finally fell asleep from exhaustion.
- I remember watching you toddle after your big brother.
- I remember your first snowstorm after you could walk. You were bundled up so much you could barely move. But it didn't really matter as we could hardly get you to walk in it!
- I remember you dive bombing daddy whenever he was laying on the floor. You'd scream and jump - never matter what daddy was doing - you were totally confident that he would catch you...and he always did.
- I remember your 5th birthday when I watched the planes fly into the towers before you woke up. I wondered how I could possibly celebrate on a day like that. But when you woke up I realized how could I not celebrate you on a day like this. You will make a difference some day.
- I remember trying to tell you that we now lived in California, not in Oregon. You had such trouble understanding that concept.
- I remember seeing you arrive at the hospital after Joshua died. I see your dad crouching down to tell you and your big brother what happened. I doubt you understood a word of it.
- I remember trying to teach you to recognize a letter from the alphabet. Frustrating us both until the point of tears.
- I remember you hiding behind the chair when the TRex comes on Juraissic Park but having you pick it out again and again as your favorite movie.
- I remember you telling me you want to be a director because you think someone needs to make (Insert obnoxious kids movie title here)2. Actually you said "I want to be the guy who yells "Cut"!
- I remember giving you our old video camera and you yelling orders to all the family members as you directed us.
- I remember you bringing me your latest Lego creation and totally being able to recognize what it is!
There is almost too much to remember...and we've barely gotten started! I can't wait to see what the next several years bring us and who you become! Happy Double Digits!!

Help! I need to create my own
spelling curriculum and Im not sure what to do. Basically Im taking the
new words that J2 encounters in his reading (Pathway Readers) and putting them on a list
thus a
spelling list. But then what? I thought maybe Id have him create the list
himself. Maybe add 5 words each day to his book and well find ways to review
them daily. But the list grows very fast! When I look at the stories hes
going to read this week I see 32 words that I know are new to him.
Any ideas? Should we spell them
outloud? Copy them? ??
BTW, when I'm not posting here - you might want to check my original blog - it's where I post 98% of the time. I used to to mirror stuff here, but it's become too much!

Aug. 23, 2006 Need a laugh?
Aug. 22, 2006 Getting Real for a minute
Our pastor has been teaching us out of James for awhile - I truly
love that book! It's so practical. Last Sunday the sermon was out of
James 5:7-11 "Be Patient With One Another". But the last point was "Be
Patient With God". And the Scriptures talked about the endurance of the
prophets and Job.
The notes went like this...
B. Example of Job (v 11)
1. He lost everything.
2. He endured (showed great patience)
3. The outcome - The Lord's compassion and mercy
and my additional notes included Job 42:10 "The Lord restored the
fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the Lord increased
all that Job had twofold." I underlined the two part. I'm not sure what
my thinking was - but I identify with some of the things Job dealt with
- not all mind you.
Today I got a card in the mail. It was from my secret sister. It was
a Get Well Soon card ... which sort of cracked me up. But then I read
what she wrote inside.
Job 42:10
Dear Amy,
I think God has blessed you even more than Job - Job got a double
portion from God; but you have been given a triple portion in your 3
boys - REJOICE!!
2 Samuel 12:20-22
Your pain of losing Joshua is real. But, because of your faith in
Jesus you will be with him again - for all eternity! Take comfort!!
Only our Lord Jesus can heal your heart - trust Him to do so.
Love, Your Secret Sister
And, you know - I have thanked the Lord for giving me the boys. Not
only did I have to keep going - get dressed every day and try to
function - but they are/were so loving to me - drying my tears and
giving me reason to laugh again.
But I've never considered the truth that He provided the blessing of
them BEFORE the trial! Isn't that like God - He knew what I needed and
provided it before I needed it!
Thanks Secret Sister for helping me to see that today!

Aug. 22, 2006 First Day of School, Take 2
Yesterday was J2's first day of school. I use Homeschool Tracker and have been totally prepared for weeks ... lesson plans printed, schedule created and everything! But there is nothing like actually doing the work to show you what you need to do!
We started with Bible - we are reading the Proverbs along with the Miller
Family. And, then Grammy came over and we did PE. We stretched out and walked for about 35 minutes...well, J2 rollerbladed. I admit - this is 80% for me (though J2 does have a bit of a belly - his brothers are slim to skinny) - but J2 seemed to really enjoy it! Last night he asked me a few times "Is Grammy coming tomorrow? Are we going to walk again?" So, I'm thinking he enjoyed it!
When we got back - we took a bit of a break and then started re-reading our Pathway Readers. I'm glad we are reviewing as J2 really struggled. :( But what else is to be expected with taking such a long break? This year we also bought the workbooks that he can do on his own - working on building independence and also giving him more practice with the words. This time in the readers also showed me that jumping right into the spelling book I bought him was not going to work. So I put it aside and we'll use the new words in his readers...or ones he struggles with. I'm glad I haven't sent our course of study into AVCS yet - I can change it!
The rest of our school work sent great! Daily Grams 2-3, Miquon Math and History (self-created) rounded out our morning. Oh! And, computer time! :) We found this great program online called Study Dog! Check it out!! All three of my boys enjoy it!
Oh yes - the other thing I realized is that we need handwriting practice again. So I ordered some cheap D'Nealian workbooks that I love!
All in all - a great day! He whizzed through his work and only got a bit frustrated at his reading skills. I pray I can encourage him today!! Off to get busy!

Aug. 17, 2006 First Day of School
Yesterday was the first day of school. Eric is teaching fourth grade again ;-) , J1 is in 5th grade and J3 is starting kindergarten. Here are our first day of school pics:
After taking pics, J3 waited outside with the neighborhood cat. He was so excited!
As soon as they left, J2 and I headed out for our traditional "not-back-to-school" breakfast. We will start school next Monday morning.

I don't call these dancing socks because I dance, but because they were knit in Dancing yarn from Knit Picks. Unfortunately It looks like this color scheme is no longer available. :-(
I did these socks toe up, two at a time, on Magic Loop. They feel great and I think they are adorable!

About Me

Day by Day....we strive to learn together, love each other and have some fun.
Day By Day.... we strive to raise our boys to be knights and warriors for the Lord.
Some days it's a struggle...
Cast of Charaters
Me - I like to read and knit. I've been a Christian for many years and
loving learning about God and seeing the Lord work in our lives! I also post on my other blog,
"Journaling Back To Joy"
DH - Is a theologically trained teacher of 4th graders at a Christian school.
He loves astronomy, LOTR and playing with the kids! He is the funniest man I know.
J1 - 12 - our oldest. He came to live with us when he was 16 mos old and completely turned
our lives inside out! While he is struggling with self-control right now - he is the
one who can brighten the room just by smiling! He loves creating things from our recycling
and anything that allows him to move (trampoline, skateboards, inline skates, etc)
J2 - 11 - our middle son. He is the one who I am currently homeschooling. He loves to create things
from Legos and he loves movies. He would watch movies all day if I let him :( He has just had a major
breakthrough in reading - for which we are praising the Lord!
J3 - 6 - my joy. He has a very tender heart for me and really works hard to make me happy. He loves
to cuddle and is just learning about Legos. He wants to be with his big brothers so much, but the age
difference is a big hurdle right now.
Joshie - 5/29/02 - 2/22/03 - Our surprise! Our only pregnancy that the Lord allowed - and we were blessed
to have him for those short mos. We are all still grieving his loss - you'll hear alot about that from time
to time. We look forward to getting to know him someday.
