Digging for Dinosaurs

I am digging for dinosaur bones from a gift from my birthday party.  I got this gift from Julien.  He is one of my friends.

I think that the dinosaur I am digging for is a T-Rex.

Book report on "The Pilgrims"

The Pilgrims - MTH history book for Thanksgiving on Thursday

There were supposed to be two boats to sail from England to America but the second boat leaked so they had to take the Mayflower.  There were thirty sailors on the ship.  It was 160 feet long and 25 feet wide.  There were 102 people on the Mayflower.

There was a baby born on the trip to America.  They slept in hammocks and they didn't have enough fresh water.  When they had to use the restrooms they used chamber pots.

It took them two long months to get to America.  When they got there they had to find firewood and food and they had to build their homes.

Ancient Rome

A long time ago in Rome they had signs like we have, but they didn't have letters like we do.  They didn't have F's or D's, just MXLI.   The signs were called milestones.  They meant two miles to Tiber River.  But we use highway signs to tell us how many miles we have to go to the grocery store - like two miles until you reach Stop n' Shop.

We made our own milestone out of clay.  They always say every road leads to Rome.

My Little brother drives me crazy

This is my little brother, Matti.  He drives me crazy!  He is four years old and goes to preschool in Merrimack.  He always hurts me by playing silly games and throwing balls at me!  And he distracts me a lot of time when I am working.

Book report for "The Quicksand Question"

The characters are Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose.

They plan to make a duck bridge when they have enough money, but the money was stolen.

A fire happened at Josh's barn.  After the fire, they found a piece of wood that said CO so they took it to the police.  It meant company.  Josh fell into quicksand and then the ambulance came and pulled him out with a ladder,

Then they heard a steering noise and a jeep came crashing in.   They knew it was the criminal because he had a yellow jeep and they found tracks on the other side of the river and they know jeeps can go through water.

So the police arrested him.  They got the money back, and at the end they named the duck bridge "Duck's welcome".

I liked the book because I like quicksand and because I like mysteries.

Ron Roy - author of A-Z Mysteries

I was born in Hartford, Connecticut. My parents named me Wallace Ronald Roy, but I shortened the name to Ron Roy.

I was a shy kid, and spent much of my time studying nature and reading. I loved school and used to win all the spelling bees.

My favorite teacher was Mr. Ben Hancock. He taught me to love books and showed me how to hit a baseball and catch a fish. Because of Mr. Hancock’s influence, I decided to become a teacher myself some day.

After college and graduate school, I became a fourth grade teacher. But somewhere along the way I started writing children’s stories and sending them to publishing companies. No one wanted to buy my stories, but I didn't give up. Each week I would write a story and send it out. Each week the story came back with “No, thank you.” written on the manuscript.

Then in 1978, I sold my first children’s book. That was one of the most exciting days of my life. Soon I left teaching and became a full time writer.

In 1997 I started writing the A to Z Mysteries series. Now I am working on Capital Mysteries. Millions of children are reading these books, which makes me very happy. But I still remember the day I sold my first book.

Digging for the past

This lesson was about history.  In digging, we discovered that in this time they had money and they could write.  They also had farms and they could grow food.  They had chopsticks and watches.  Our note had a date that was June 9, 1901, but that didn't make sense with the chopsticks in America.  But I discovered they were actually laborers working on the floor.  We found that they grew blueberries because they were dried.  This history is called archaeology.  Artifacts are the things that you find when you dig up.  So my answer that I think is that this was a time when they had no electricity, they would go pick blueberries and then go sell them so they could get the money to get the stuff that they need to plant the food.

This is the digging area where we found the artifacts

This is when we were digging for the artifacts

This is the money that they had - but they didn't have  much because they were poor in the town.

This was the letter I found. These are what the blueberries would look like when they're dry

These are what the chopsticks would loo like when the laborers used them.

How school is going

School is going alright, but I haven't done a lot right now.  I've been doing a lot of testing at my regular school.  I was doing learning tests with Mrs. Brown.  I worked on exercises and stuff with Mrs. Daniels.  I did speech stuff with Mrs. Sullivan like lots of easy stuff that is about speech.  I kind of felt happy and sad at school.  I kind of miss my friends.

I went to the homeschool gym last week and it made me really sweat!  My friend Nathaniel was there.  At the gym, I like to run around and play tag and basketball.

I've just started to homeschool

Hello, my name is Ben.  Homeschooling makes me feel kind of tired but when you get used to it it's not that bad.  At regular school I don't really get so tired, but I like homeschooling better.

What I like about homeschooling is that I can read, that I can learn about history, and science.

I am diabetic.  It means I have a problem, which is that I take my blood sugar and take shots.  My body doesn't give me lots of insulin so I have to do it in shots.  I have to prick my finger and put a test strip into the glucometer to test the blood.  When you get used to it, it's not that bad.

I am seven years old.  I have one brother that's four years old and he drives me nuts - especially when I work.   I like to watch tv and play with my Star Wars action figures when I'm finished working. I have six good friends.
