I'm back!

Oct. 11, 2008 - I'm back!

That's right! I am back, and am approaching this from a new angle now. Instead of letting someone else dictate what I teach my kids and how I teach it, and am taking matters into my own hands, as I have had to do with so many other aspects of my life over the past ten years. Right now, my son, Nolan, is attending an online school, but it is not working out very well; and I just pulled my daughter, Nina, out of public school again about a month ago. I have purchased for her a pretty pricey curriculum, but can't seem to get her motivated to do her work. It is hard, now that I work fulltime again, but I am going to try and cover as much as I can over the weekends she is home (she has visitation with her dad), and in the evenings. It will be a hard road ahead, but I am hopeful that I can figure out a way to make this work out, because the alternative is just unacceptable. Wish me luck!

Have Nolan visit Chase's blog and comment. He's at http://pofpz.blogspot.com/
It's Pirates of the Caribbean themed because he and his dad play the game online.

One important lesson I've learned over the years is that no matter how much a book or curriculum costs, if it isn't working you should definitely try something else. It'll save a lot of tears in the long run. My higher math curriculum for Marina was too confusing for both of us, but I stubbornly held onto it for a year and a half before I tried something else. We had a horrible period where she hated all things math. She's healing now, but I wish I had recognized sooner that it just wasn't working. Sometimes it truly is the curriculum, not the kid.

Peace and Laughter,

About Me
I'm back for a second attempt at homeschooling my kids, since all of the schools here in Arkansas (public & private) are totally clueless on how to teach! I'm certainly not an expert, but at least I can protect my kids from bullies (both students & teachers), and try to offer them a safer and calmer environment in which they can learn. The only problem is that I now have the further challenge of my working fulltime now, and since I am the main bringer of the bacon now, I cannot quit. It is hard to get my hubby motivated to get involved in this endeavor, but I think that my 10 & 12 year-old are old enough to take responsibility for themselves, but first I have to "un-school" them, and teach them how to think for themselves. That alone may take a entire year, but I see this as an opportunity for them to develop into free-thinking, well-educated individuals. I just hope they still do well on the annual tests required by the state.
