Dec. 18, 2006 The Nativity Story Movie Review
Pastor Tim talked about the nativity story movie in his sermon on Sunday. He said that he felt that the movie was great and that we should all take time to see it in the busy Christmas season. We had already seen the movie as a family. I really liked it as well, but I thought that they had worked way too hard to avoid any controversy. Basicaly I feel that they did an extremly good job of presenting a typical Baptist live nativity program. At the least they didn't appear to add any new herasy to the traditional tale
Some of the things I would have liked to have seen is the inclusion a CGI version of the host of heaven opening up and the angels rejoycing to the shepherds tending the flocks of sheep around Bethlehem.
It might have been cool to see Simeon and Anne greet Mary, Joseph, and eight day old Jesus in the Temple.
And although it may have been difficult it might have been cool to see some of the ways that Jesus fulfilled Jewish Prophecy.
Fulfillment would require the blood of a man who was not of the seed of man to atone for the sins of men. With the Wages of sin being death and the life of man or beast represented by their blood, it could then be shown that the blood (life) of animals slain in the temple to atone for mens sin (death) just formed a temporary covering of the sin. It was like the Jews were wearing a costume that represented life while being truly dead on the inside. That is why the term white washed sepulchres was such an appropriate term for the Pharasees of Jesus time. And probably still applies to a good number of us, the people attending and running "Christian" churches today. The virgin birth, sinless life, and the subsequent death of Jesus at last allows a means by wich our sins can be totally removed from who we are.
Perhaps it would have been cool to show that the Shepherds of Bethlehem were probably tending flocks of sheep intended to be sacraficed in the Temple, and so they, better than anyone else could appreciate the birth of the one that would provide a permanent sacrafice, as they had been present at the birth of so many that would not. Perhaps they were aware that they were witnessing the end of their livelyhood because with the coming of the Messiah the blood of sheep would no longer be necessary at the temple.
How would you show that a new covenant (agreement between Man and God) was necessary to fulfill Gods desire for a kingdom of priestsand a holy nation? God had Moses tell the house of Jacob and the people of Israel "...If you Obey me and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured posession...". With the construction of the golden calf, and the orgie thrown on its behalf, the old covenant was broken. God, having shown that men were incapable of upholding even a small portion of a covenant with him, needed a way to fufill both ends of an agreement. His solution was to set the standard (no sin) and to provide the means for men born into sin to meet the standard. So God could establish his nation of Priests as outlined in Jeremiah 30:31. How you gonna make that happen without the blood of Jesus, born of a virgin?
Perhaps my desires would have ruined a perfectly good movie, but if anyone is shooting an underground version and wants ideas, feel free to use what I've got, or go looking in the bible for more. Till then I will be looking for "Nativity, the Unauthorized ", coming soon to a theatre near you. |

Dec. 14, 2006 Christmas Letter
December 2006
Dear Friends,
This is my (Tav) first attempt at a Christmas letter. Not because our lives suddenly became more interesting, but because I am finally realizing how important you are to our lives. This is my feeble attempt to share some of us with you.
Our life seems to consist of nothing but running from one event to another and I know that we allow the urgent things of our lives to overwhelm the important. I have been working at making the important more urgent as I can now see time flowing past our lives ever faster, and real life doesn’t always allow “do overs”. I draw some comfort from the idea that we should all have eternity in heaven to love and laugh with one another.
My electrical contracting business continues to do well. Winters have always been a challenge to me with the short days, cold weather, and barren landscape. Trying to be “joy filled” and “jolly” for the wife and children makes me wish I could have some recreational pharmaceuticals for Christmas. My brother, Jim, came to help us with the business in May. He has been a blessing to our family in many ways; helping watch children, and drive teenagers hither and yon.
Kathleen continues to home school the children in spite of the fact that we now see how they are turning out. Seriously, the kids are doing great and continue to blow away the standardized testing. We just hope that Kathleen continues to hold up under the stress of raising, loving and educating the children while helping me with the business and having a life of her own.
Tayva got her driver’s license this summer after she turned 16 and is a very good driver. Although her mom is terrified every minute her daughter is driving due to the miserable road conditions and the mentally emotionally or sobriety challenged drivers that race up and down our roads. Tayva also got a job as a nanny/mother’s helper on the beach in Florida. She says she had a great time for the 3 months she was there, but she hates sand and spent most of her free time reading in the basement or at the coffee shop.
When we went to pick her up, I took the whole family to Walt Disney World. Kathie loved it. Some of the kids liked it some of the time. I feel that Disney World fun is some thing that they do to you. Some sort of manufactured mass produced fun that they slap on you as they shove you past Mickey to the line for the next ride. Other than that it was great. Kameron was the least excited to be there as he wanted to be back in West Virginia because his girlfriend from Texas was visiting. So I used the standard Walt Disney World speech that I had overheard several fathers give to encourage their beloved offspring. It goes something like this: “Shut your mouth and have some fun or I will twist your lips off”. If you like you can add how much it is costing you to listen to all of their whining and sniveling by the day or minute or second, depending on your math skills and the amount of information your wife gave you on the actual cost of feeding the Mouse.
Kameron is doing very well at developing a life outside our immediate family. He is a natural born leader, enjoys acting, soccer and hanging out with his friends. He is anxious to get his learners permit on his 15th birthday (the 26th) because he believes once he can drive he will never have to come home again except for underwear and money.
Kaitlyn celebrated her tenth birthday on August 22 and is rapidly becoming a grace-filled young lady. She loves art and music and is generally kind to her brothers and sisters.
Tyler at seven is interested in games, spending time with friends and how the lawnmower works.
Kylee at four is her usual charming self. We believe she will be the first Pierce child to go pro with her charm and wit.
There is much to be grateful for. We are overfed, over entertained, well clothed and live well. We truly live lives of abundance. If you get a chance to pray for us please pray that we will learn to be content with what we have, and that I will stay motivated to push our family forward financially and spiritually. We are most grateful for our friends and family and if you read this far you are probably one or the other, so thank you for participating in our lives.
Love, Tav, Kathie & crew |

Dec. 7, 2006 pig tossing contest
I just read a news article about a man in West Point, Mississippi tossing a sixty pound pig over the counter at an area hotel as a joke. The Police Leutenant said it must have been a red neck sort of thing because he had never heard of it and did not see the humor in it at all. Well call me a red neck I can't stop laughing and I believe that animal tossing should be an olympic event we could award cash prizes for humorous or inventive tosses. Where would you throw a bucket of weasels? Who would be most suprised by a chucked chicken or a pitched polecat? I say get on video and I will help you pay your fine with my anual award of five dollars in the name of the first pig tosser and opossum pitcher Mr. (and I'm not makeing this up) Pugh. Pugh's Power to the Pig Pitching and Opossum Poking People of Planet Earth P.P.P.P.O.P.P.P.E. That's right I am calling it the Poopy Award.

Dec. 6, 2006 Would you chooose Democracy over Liberty?
In 2001 I volunteered to join with a church project
to build homes for people living in Juarez,
Mexico.
While in Juarez I observed that most of the
people were industrious, hard working, and as a whole seemed content with their
lives. However, poverty invaded every aspect of their lives. People
were living in shelters made of shipping pallets, tar paper, old tires, bed
springs, and cardboard boxes. The local home depot seemed as if it was
only willing to display a few actual tools or building supplies at a time.
Over the years it appears as if the people of Juarez are living a little better. But as I left for home
I feasted at a local buffet "more food than the children I had met could
imagine." After dinner, from a hill in El Paso,
I could see the Rio Grande
snaking along. On my side of the river the lights shone, flashed, moved,
and boasted. Across no more than a small trickle of water, in the growing
twilight, the near total lack of electric lights across the sprawling City of Juarez demanded to know
the answer to the question that was flashing brighter in my head than the beer
sign across the street.... WHY?
We did not work harder, we are not smarter, and we are not
that much better educated than the kind and inviting people that I now knew
lived across the border. The events of 9/11 and the ensuing regime change
along with a picture in the National Geographic that showed a nighttime
satellite image of the electric lights of Asia showing a North Korea sized
black hole further encouraged me to find out why. What determines the
difference between abject poverty and a society where everyone can, if they
choose, live better than King Solomon could have ever dreamed of? Think
about it. Travel is convenient, food is safe, and water is everywhere, central
heating, air conditioning, medical treatment, toothpaste, and toilet paper.
Life is Good.
The empty heads on TV all speak of Democracy as if it will
cure all that ails our planet. I know that they are all pedaling snake oil. I
cant tell if they are intentionally misleading people or if they are
profoundly ignorant of our situation. I prefer to believe in the infinite
capacity of our societys ignorance over the idea that any people be so
intentionally evil.
After some
thought and reading I am now satisfied that I know how one people prosper and
another lives out their lives poking through the dirt and dung for edible
grubs.
I will
speak of my opinions as if they are established fact, please feel free to think
for your self. I am only describing the model that I use to judge world events
with.
True
prosperity springs forth as the natural result of a people experiencing
liberty. There are only three identifiable
conditions in which men exist, Chaos, Tyranny, or Liberty.
Chaos is
the natural condition of man. Every man for himself, you can have as much
justice as you can beat out of your neighbors. If you can get some club toting
friends you can get more justice. Todays tormentor will be replaced by a
bigger more terrible tormentor. This is the condition experienced by many of
the people of Africa, Asia and High School.
Tyranny happens
when one guy gets enough friends with clubs to kill all pretenders to the
throne. You can have as much justice as the king will allow you to have. The
king spends most of his time and money proving that he should stay king. He
builds statues to himself; he wears a crown, and has the religious leaders to
hold a coronation where the power of god is bestowed upon him by a high priest
wearing a funny hat. He claims the divine right of kings or even claims that he
himself or his ancestors are gods.
Natural Law
stems from Christian lines of thought. If Jesus is King of Kings why do we need
some Monarch taking our money, land, and crops, just because his great grand
pappy could kick the snot out of my great grand pappy?
Natural Law was studied much like
physics or chemistry. Natural law was thought to pre-exist human law and if
properly applied resulted in minimizing human suffering.
Richard
Maybury has distilled Natural Law down to two ideas, a total of 17 words:
1. Do
all that you have agreed to do.
2. Do
not encroach on other persons or their property.
The men
that forged the founding documents of the United States of America went so far
as to proclaim That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator
with certain unalienable Rights, and
that no one person but that We the people of the United States claim for our
selves independence from a king. We actually rejected the divine right of
kings. No one man stands taller, shouts louder, or has the right to steal from
his neighbor. OK, they had a narrow version of what a person was, but still
what a marvelous idea. They got a lot of other stuff right too. They understood
the corrupting nature of power, so they divided it up in such a way that those
who sought to be king, would be tied up fighting one another for the throne
rather than oppressing and stealing from the rest of us.
The Bill of
Rights protects "We" the People from our own Government run
amuck. Not freedoms granted by a
governmental overlord but Liberties ordained by God not unlike the Divine right
of Kings. We are endowed by our Creator certain unalienable rights among those
the right to Life, Liberty,
and the Pursuit of Happiness. Those liberties are enumerated and protected by
the first ten Amendments to our Constitution.
Short
answer is he who has the most liberty lives the best. Good day and God Bless

Apr. 11, 2006 Sorry I Took so Long Maybe Im Better
Dear friends Sorry for my
extended absence. I went to a mens conference, I'm sure it was a good
thing for most men but for me it was a bad trip. I have spent the last
weeks in a foul mood, and the thoughts that I was thinking were not fit
for the pages of a homeschool blog. I hope I'm getting better.
The topic of the mens retreat was that as Christians we are supposed to
be real and authentic. that nice and safe are not the aim of
Christianity. Jesus was a dangerous man. No one ever called for the
crucifiction of Captain Kangaroo or Miser Rogers, Jesus was tearing the
religious and political fabric of the day to shreds. And then how are
we now to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. The
conjecture of the retreat was that we are to bond with a band of
Christian brothers to encourage and love one another. That as a group
we should seek adventure and experiences that would help to encourage
us to move on the the next step in our walk with God.
My issue is that I do not trust the company of men. My experineces with
men are not good. Although I am willing to share, I'm sure this is not
the proper time or place, I also doubt that my whining would be
particularly helpful. I am unsure of myself and hesitant perhaps even
fearful of being a man. At the same time I feel that I am becoming the
man that God desires me to be, and proud of how far I have come so far.
My retreat experience left me feeling that
once again the word from "MANLAND" was that I don't measure up. I am
sick to death of trying to measure up. My personality is such that I
will probably always seek to please those around me. Hoping for a
little scrap of validation or appreciation. Waiting like a motherless
puppy for a pat on the head. God is once again
getting my attention. He wants me to know that satisfaction and
contentment have but one source. The praises and strokes of this
world will never satisfy. I do have men
friends. Perhaps some day God will see fit to surround me with a band
of brothers. Maybe that would be OK. Till then I will seek a deeper
relationship with Jesus and the boys. Maybe someday I will be enough of
a man that I could accept the kisses of Judas. Maybe someday I
can comfortably accept the position Jesus offers me as his brother.
Kind of wierd. Sorry for being a Judas. Sorry for sleeping in the
garden. Sorry for needing to be smarter than you. Will you still show
me how to be a Man?

Mar. 22, 2006 Less Than One Man in Ten Will Die With a Satisfied Mind
America has lost a
real life super hero. My Agnostic/Antoginistic father went to spend
some time with a friend who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He
had been given six months to live by his doctor. He got less, He died
this morning of heart failure while speaking with my father. His name
is Cal Wickham. Cal was the real deal. Think
John Wayne, Marlboro man, the long tall Texan. That and so much more.
Truley a legend in his own time. He grew up in the woods in the Pacific
North West. Joined the Marines, Wore the uniform long enough to get it
blood soaked in the black sand of Iwo Jima. After two months of the
most brutal fighting of WW2 he took a bullet to the heart. The corpsmen
(medics) kept stuffing him in a body bag and he kept crawling out. Two
years of rehab and he went home. He married and raised his children as
a utility lineman in the wilds of Idaho mountain country and later as
the manager of the electrical co-op. I met him
when I was nine or ten years old. He was the biggest and scarriest man
I had ever met. His massive paw engulfed mine when he shook my hand as
if I were a man. I found him to be a gentle and kind giant of a man who
never seemed to age. I last saw him in 1999. He for the first time in
my recolection complained. He said the depression had gotten ahold of
his heart and he couldn't seem to shake it off. When I suggested a
relationship with Christ had helped me with my depression he got
agitated so I dropped it and we had a pleasant visit. As far as I know
he never knew Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior.
If the God I worship is actually the real deal and
if His word is the standard by wich we will all be judged Cal will
spend eternity in hell, a place he would gladly trade for the sands of
Iwo Jima. And I will spend eternity in Heaven, where I can only hope
that somehow regret is not allowed. For, If I actually knew, that had I
witnessed better, or louder, stronger that he might have heard, the
burden would be more than I could bear. I might have helped superman
save him self. He might have died with a satisfied mind. Good night and God Bless

Mar. 21, 2006 Justified or Sanctified?
Lets get real. People
who seek the Lord, have no need for the approval of other men. People
who seek to fill their lives with anything less than Gods best, need
the approval of others and will not abide a dissenting voice.
Frequently I see angry people waving signs and
shouting protest, angry at me for how I am living my life. Why? Do they
really value my opinion? Do they want me to do something for them? Do
they need me to send them money? Why are they so angry at me? Why
do they care how I live? I don't remember asking their opinion on
how I should be living my life. Why do they feel so free with their
unsolicited asnine advice?
Some seek Jesus. Some seek justification. Many never
seek the mainstream. Some are happy with their own version of reality
and are only agitated when confronted with nuggets of truth that do not
fit their belief structure. Others congrigate with peer groups in bars,
bath houses, crack dens, Wall Street, Washington D.C., and prisons.
There is however another group.
Activists seek not only the consensus of their
peers. They desire to stifle all criticism of their activities or
political position. Justification is their highest aim. In the
end it doesn't matter what kind of a sinner wants to stay justified in
his sin.
As a Christian I realize that I am commisioned by
God to offer truth to all that I meet. But it is hard to speak truth
when I know that I am likely to start a fight, with someone I do not
like, over something I don't particularly care about, when I know that
in the end the people that I had hoped to help stomp off, leaving
me with nothing but a headache and a label.
Labels are a way for truly bigoted or closed minded
ideologs to reject the message. You know if you don't like the message
shoot, or crucify the messenger.
It does not matter what truth I am to speak or who I
am to speak it to. The absolute truth is God left it up to me. Will I
stand for what is right?
So do I stay safe and keep my mouth shut? Or do I do
what God tells me? Evil prospers when good men do nothing. Just call me
the chovanistic, homophobic, gun toting, extremist, christian, loud
mouthed, member of the vast right wing conspiracy
Good night and God bless

Mar. 20, 2006 Call it what ever you like.
Recently I was accosted
by yet another well meaning, yet fact lacking individual who felt it
was his duty to challenge my familys choice, or even our right to
homeschool. Rather than tell him what I really thought of him and his
right to judge my family I began to walk him through a small reality
check.
When I find myself in a verbal altercation, I like
to change the nouns to suit my argument. he who controls the vocabulary
controls the discussion. So when he asked if ("Socialazation" was a
problem within my "Homeschool"?) I said "No that I thought that the
real problem was with Government Agents using intimidation, drugs, and
peer pressure to institutionalize minor inmates, while using my tax
dollars and federally funded facilities to warehouse children for
parents too broke, self absorbed, or abivolent to the plight of their
own children was a much larger problem". And the fact that this is
considered normal and desirable is even more disturbing.
Please don't think that I am disrespecting the
Government Teachers, Administrators, Janitors or Cooks. It is the
system I detest, not the wardens.
The system model (K-12) was designed by the society
that gave rise to a civilization that brought us the Nazi's. It was
brought to our shores a hundred years ago by Industrialists needing
cogs to operate the machinerey of their corprate empires. It breeds
followers, conformists, lackeys and bullet catchers. That is what it
was designed to do. The system is not broke, it is doing exactly what
it was designed to do.
It is astounding to me that some children still get
educated in the mess that is now our Government School system. It gets
blamed for all of societys' problems, so we nturally think that
it can solve everything from literacy to teen pregnancy and
malnourishment of neglected children. If only we gave more money, if
only we had more schools, if only we got better at intigrating, if only
we had more teachers. Insanity defined is "repeating an action with the
expectation of different results". It is insane to continue to fund a
system that clearly will never meet the hopes and expectations
that I have for my children
Look; if our school system were a business it
would be going down like the titanic. Charges of unfair trade practices
and monopolies linking it to the likes of Ma Bell would be all ove the
T.V. Thousands would be joining the ENRON and Haliburton croud in jail,
people would be demanding that the Government do something, People
would be marching with signs "What have you done to our children".
Aren't you glad that it is the same warm
loving fuzzy government that you don't trust to tell you the truth
about UFO's, JFK, AIDS, WMD's, Vietnam, Elvis, Nuclear testing, Waco,
Ruby Ridge, Murrah Building, Iraq, IRS, FBI, CIA, Iran Contra,
and dead Clinton lawers littering our nations parks. That
we have indoctrinating your children.
It does'nt matter how you look at it, Literacy rate,
teen pregnancy, STD's, Gender awareness, racism, math skills, college
entry rates, life satisfaction, job satisfaction, bankrupcy rates,
incarceration, credit abuse, drugs, alcohol abuse, tobacco use, the
ability to invest in the stock market, nutrition, violence, and kids
with wedgies, swirlies, and dumped in the trash can of life. You can
take comfort in our governments omnicient megalithic wisdom. Welcome to
high school kids, these are the best days of your life.
These are my children. My wife says so. I will raise
them as I see fit. I will pay my taxes so the feds can program your
children any way that "they" (Our blind bloated monopolistic
bureurocracy) sees fit. And until my Constitutionally protected rights
are taken from me "for my own good" we will homeschool and I will
criticize the monopoly funded by my tax dollars that some will always
lovingly refer to as "our public education system". Good Night
and God Bless
