Less Than One Man in Ten Will Die With a Satisfied Mind

America has lost a real life super hero. My Agnostic/Antoginistic father went to spend some time with a friend who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He had been given six months to live by his doctor. He got less, He died this morning of heart failure while speaking with my father. His name is Cal Wickham.
Cal was the real deal. Think John Wayne, Marlboro man, the long tall Texan. That and so much more. Truley a legend in his own time. He grew up in the woods in the Pacific North West. Joined the Marines, Wore the uniform long enough to get it blood soaked in the black sand of Iwo Jima. After two months of the most brutal fighting of WW2 he took a bullet to the heart. The corpsmen (medics) kept stuffing him in a body bag and he kept crawling out. Two years of rehab and he went home. He married and raised his children as a utility lineman in the wilds of Idaho mountain country and later as the manager of the electrical co-op.
I met him when I was nine or ten years old. He was the biggest and scarriest man I had ever met. His massive paw engulfed mine when he shook my hand as if I were a man. I found him to be a gentle and kind giant of a man who never seemed to age. I last saw him in 1999. He for the first time in my recolection complained. He said the depression had gotten ahold of his heart and he couldn't seem to shake it off. When I suggested a relationship with Christ had helped me with my depression he got agitated so I dropped it and we had a pleasant visit. As far as I know he never knew Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior.
If the God I worship is actually the real deal and if His word is the standard by wich we will all be judged Cal will spend eternity in hell, a place he would gladly trade for the sands of Iwo Jima. And I will spend eternity in Heaven, where I can only hope that somehow regret is not allowed. For, If I actually knew, that had I witnessed better, or louder, stronger that he might have heard, the burden would be more than I could bear. I might have helped superman save him self. He might have died with a satisfied mind.
    Good night and God Bless

I am so sorry to hear of your dad's friend's death. I think that we all have the regret of not witnessing enough when we hear of a death of someone we were close to that we knew didn't know the Lord, but you have to go on "hope" that he received the Lord. You did plant a seed when you brought it up to him.
I know you, Tav, and you ARE VERY BOLD!!! JUST READ YOUR BLOGS!!! But, also you are very kind and compassionate, so right now just go on HOPE.
