The Nativity Story Movie Review
Pastor Tim talked about the nativity story movie in his sermon on Sunday. He said that he felt that the movie was great and that we should all take time to see it in the busy Christmas season. We had already seen the movie as a family. I really liked it as well, but I thought that they had worked way too hard to avoid any controversy. Basicaly I feel that they did an extremly good job of presenting a typical Baptist live nativity program. At the least they didn't appear to add any new herasy to the traditional tale
Some of the things I would have liked to have seen is the inclusion a CGI version of the host of heaven opening up and the angels rejoycing to the shepherds tending the flocks of sheep around Bethlehem.
It might have been cool to see Simeon and Anne greet Mary, Joseph, and eight day old Jesus in the Temple.
And although it may have been difficult it might have been cool to see some of the ways that Jesus fulfilled Jewish Prophecy.
Fulfillment would require the blood of a man who was not of the seed of man to atone for the sins of men. With the Wages of sin being death and the life of man or beast represented by their blood, it could then be shown that the blood (life) of animals slain in the temple to atone for mens sin (death) just formed a temporary covering of the sin. It was like the Jews were wearing a costume that represented life while being truly dead on the inside. That is why the term white washed sepulchres was such an appropriate term for the Pharasees of Jesus time. And probably still applies to a good number of us, the people attending and running "Christian" churches today. The virgin birth, sinless life, and the subsequent death of Jesus at last allows a means by wich our sins can be totally removed from who we are.
Perhaps it would have been cool to show that the Shepherds of Bethlehem were probably tending flocks of sheep intended to be sacraficed in the Temple, and so they, better than anyone else could appreciate the birth of the one that would provide a permanent sacrafice, as they had been present at the birth of so many that would not. Perhaps they were aware that they were witnessing the end of their livelyhood because with the coming of the Messiah the blood of sheep would no longer be necessary at the temple.
How would you show that a new covenant (agreement between Man and God) was necessary to fulfill Gods desire for a kingdom of priestsand a holy nation? God had Moses tell the house of Jacob and the people of Israel "...If you Obey me and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured posession...". With the construction of the golden calf, and the orgie thrown on its behalf, the old covenant was broken. God, having shown that men were incapable of upholding even a small portion of a covenant with him, needed a way to fufill both ends of an agreement. His solution was to set the standard (no sin) and to provide the means for men born into sin to meet the standard. So God could establish his nation of Priests as outlined in Jeremiah 30:31. How you gonna make that happen without the blood of Jesus, born of a virgin?
Perhaps my desires would have ruined a perfectly good movie, but if anyone is shooting an underground version and wants ideas, feel free to use what I've got, or go looking in the bible for more. Till then I will be looking for "Nativity, the Unauthorized ", coming soon to a theatre near you. |
