Biophilus

• Oct. 13, 2008 - Robbing Peter to rob Paul

I saw an interview with some guy involved with Obama's campaign earlier today. He was giving the usual Democrat line about how wealth needs to be redistributed. You know, tax the crap out of the rich people and use that money to create programs for the poor people.

The fundamental misunderstanding here is that they don't realize that rich people who run big businesses are an asset, not a problem.

First of all, let's clear something up here. Rich people are not automatically greedy *******s. Having money does not make you evil. There are plenty of greedy poor people in the world, and there are plenty of kind and generous rich people who do good things with their money.

Furthermore, rich people who run big businesses are what drives our economy. If you want a job with a particular business, then that business had better be able to afford to hire you, or else you're not getting that job. The more taxes are paid by big companies, the less money they have available to hire people with. So when you raise taxes on the richest people who are in charge of big businesses, that results in a loss of jobs because now those people can't afford to hire as many people for their business.

Ultimately, who ends up getting hurt here? The poor people. The rich guy running the business will have to shrink his business a little, but he'll still end up making some profit. And, of course, the politicians who raised taxes in the first place are getting a lot richer 'cause that's where all the taxes are going. Meanwhile, the poor dude looking for a job is out of luck.

There may be some non greedy rich people and yes many do donate money and support causes, but in general they are also the ones living a lifestyle far beyond that of the people their hiring, and if they're giving money away I bet that they still have a fairly good chuck set aside for their rainy days
If we're taxing big business and wealthier Americans and they say they can't hire anyone because of it I'm betting its more likely that they simply don't want to give up their own luxuries

What you say is true, but I don't think it nullifies my point. Even if a business owner is nothing but greedy, lowering his taxes will still result in job creation. If his goal is to make as much profit as possible, then he'll want his business to grow as much as possible... and that means he'll want to hire people. So, even if his motives aren't pure, I think the result will still be good.

possibly yes. I do think that your argument underestimates American consumerism. Frankly if someone makes it, we'll probably buy it and an extra just in case. Businesses really can't seem to resist making stuff we don't need (creating jobs in the process) and getting rich off it.

I agree with you 100%. People just don't understand. I can't understand why these people are so stupid. They are blind to the facts. It's like they see their perfect little world and screw the rest of us over just because. Ryan's boss' company isn't considered a "small" business because they make over $250,000 a year, and yet his company is struggling because he got taxed out the wazzoo and was really only able to pay his employees and pay the bills for all the equipment. He says if Obama gets in, he's screwed. That means we're screwed. We're all going to get screwed by that con man. (sorry if anyone is for Obama, I'm really passionate about things that concern my son's well being and future)

oh, btw, just to give you a visual, he made about 300,000 and his taxes were above 150,000. Tell me that's fair. If we stifle the big businesses, it's going to hurt our economy one way or another. yeah, there are greedy people out there, rich and poor. (however, look at Bill Gates, he gives A LOT of money to charities) If you have a problem with these CEOs that have screwed with Wall street, let THEM pay for the repayment, not the government! We don't need those greedy little paws in our businesses! (watch Fun with Dick and Jane, it's a great movie about Enron type CEOs) You talk about greedy, all the democrats are after when they want to raise taxes on the "rich" (btw, their definition of rich is about our definition of "middle-class") is money. They want money in their pockets, not ours. I have proof. I pay bills, I have a kid, my husband makes so much. when he got a raise, we went into another tax bracket, so even MORE taxes are taken out each time we get paid. We're still barely making it. Tell me that's fair.

About Me

"Biophilus" is roughly Greek for "loving life", an attitude that I try to keep with me at all times. I am a masters student at Middle Tennessee State University and was homeschooled for 12 years. Homeschooling is a passion of mine, but this blog features all sorts of random things that catch my attention. I have a lot of interests, and there's really no telling what you might find here.
