Writer's block

What a nightmare -- wanting to write, but not having anything worthwhile to say. Actually, I have some things I could write about, but I'm in too much of a hurry. So, I decided to post a poem I wrote last year when I couldn't think of anything to write about.  Enjoy!

Writer's Block
You empty page, staring at me, what are you looking at?
Do you think that poetry lines like these are simply pulled from a hat?
Look past my eyes and into my mind --
take a quick peek and there you'll see
Piles and boxes of words and rhymes
all cluttered together most crazily.
I pick up each one to see where it fits,
rummaging, tinkering so carefully.
But sometimes the poem still turns out like this.
It's just not as easy, dear page, as it seems.

Stage Fright

Stage fright. Many people suffer from that vicious malady, myself included. I've never quite given in to it (by God's grace!) but I do have some interesting conversations with myself . . . like this one I wrote after a piano competition. Maybe it will sound familiar to some of you as well!

Thumping in my eardrums,
Fluttering in my hands,
That nervous trembling in my knees --
Impossible to stand!

Breathe a little deeper;
Take a slower breath.
Just close your eyes- don't watch
That clock!- you're acting scared to death.

Thirty-nine! They called my number.
Time to move.
But I can't go! My head is light --
It's spinning 'round the room!

Don't be silly - move it!
Go on through the door.
Sit on the bench, now play the scale,
STOP! Wait a moment more . . .

Deep inhale, lifting hands  . . .
I'm starting!
Help me, Lord.

Now play!

Just a Poem

A couple of months ago, on a whim, I entered a poetry contest  I was rather hesitant at the time, because I'd never entered a poetry contest before, and because I'd never written in blank verse before. But, (with my mom's encouragement), I decided to try it, and, then a few days ago, I found out that I received an honorable mention!  Anyway, to shorten a lengthy story, I decided to post it here. Hope you enjoy!

Another War

Inside the car he sat and gazed alone.

The train was roaring, people chatting, but

The clamor could not pierce his thoughts that flew

Ahead to reach his journey’s end. He sighed.

“Been here before?” A voice said from behind.

His head jerked ‘round—the voice rasped out a laugh.

“I didn’t mean to scare ya, soldier boy,”

(For soldier boy he was), “rest easy, see?”

The solder looked and saw the aging man

Who spoke, and blushing slightly, smiled a bit.

“Old habits die hard.” said he with a shrug.

The old man’s eyes were knowing. “That they do.”

“So, where ya headin’? Do ya know this place?”

The soldier turned back in his seat. “I did.”

He answered briefly. Undeterred, his new

Acquaintance tried again.“ Ya got a home?”

“A fam’ly or a sweetheart watin’ here?”

The soldier drew a breath and closed his eyes.

“Not here. Not anymore.” was all he said.

A lull ensued; the whistle wailed. Again,

The soldier spoke. “ You know, it’s not what I

Had planned when over there. Thought I’d come home

And leave the war behind, but now. . .”  He paused.

“Another war is waiting for me here.”

“It’s diff’rent, but the same.”  The train was still.

The other trav’lers vanished, but the men

Remained in silence. The old man stretched out

His hand.  “May God be with you as you fight.”

The soldier grasped the hand, “He always is,”

And strode away to face his battle ground.

About Me

Welcome to my little perch! I'm Kori, an 18 year old homeschool graduate who is the oldest of five kids. I'm an MMK (minister of music's kid), and I'm very thankful for the family the Lord chose for me! A few of my favorite things are reading, writing , playing piano, and working with kids. Right now, I'm pursuing a degree in music using distance education and CollegePlus! The most important thing in my life is my relationship my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In this blog, I want to sing His praises and encourage others to praise Him as well. Enjoy the music!

Luke 12:6-7 (KJV)

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
