The protective mama-bear -- warning vent inside
This is the role I played today. Bekah has been running a fever every afternoon for a few weeks now. She might go a day or two without it but then it's back. Nothing else is wrong -- just this fever. I called the ped. yesterday and they want to see her. Of course, our ped. is off on Tuesday. ARGHHH Oh well. So we all go in for the 8:10 a.m. appointment. The nurse was very nice. She said "you must homeschool" and was very friendly. When the doctor came into the room she said 'wow we have a full room today" The tone wasn't a friendly "oh it's nice to have a full room" tone either. She did her exam and ordered blood work to be done. The last thing she said when leaving the room was "the children are very well behaved" Lab tech comes in to draw blood. Lab tech doesn't get the vein (vein rolled) and begins digging in Bekah's arm. Bekah is in great pain and the lab tech continues to dig around in her arm with this needle. I think it was even worse because there was NO communication. I had to ask continually what she was doing. Finally I said, "I think you need to stop" The lab tech looked at me as though I had three heads but she stopped and said "well see what the doctor says" She leaves the room. We wait........ The doctor comes back in and says "I hear we don't have any blood yet" I told her that that is correct and that the lab tech was digging around in Bekah's arm with the needle and that's just not going to cut it. The doctor tells us that we have to get the blood drawn etc... blah blah blah She says that her nurse is good at this and is willing to try. I said that would be fine. THEN the doctor says "I think the children need to step out while it is being done" Oh I was so mad. I wanted to say "HELLLOOO do you not remember your last words before you left the room previously" but I didn't. I did say "The children will not be leaving the room. They did not speak a word or get up or move during the last attempt" Then the doctor said "well it is tense in here" Um yeah it sure is but that's because of your lab tech not because of my children. ARGHHHHH
The nurse came in and she did a good job. Bekah's vein (in the other arm) did roll but the nurse talked through it and was much more gentle in doing it and she got the blood drawn. She even was concerned about how pale Bekah looked and brought her a drink.
For the tests they ran there in the office everything was fine. They do send some out for testing outside of the clinic and we'll know those results tomorrow.
Bekah is resting now and has her typical afternoon fever.
