a little test
I have noticed the past couple of days that Mark is tending to not come when his name is called. Well, let me rephrase that. If he thinks he knows why I'm calling him and he's happy about that, he quickly and happily comes; however, if he doesn't think he'll like why I'm calling him, he won't come. This is not okay :-) Yesterday, instead of correcting for it, I tried a little test that I knew would make the point and bring him "back in line" without much work on my part and without correction being given. We were having snack and he wanted more grapes. He left the table (w/out permission). I called his name. He didn't come. I'm sure he THOUGHT I was calling his name to correct him for leaving the table. I called a second time. He did not come. I called a third time and he came. I said to him, "I'm so sorry you chose to disobey and not come when I called your name. I was going to give you this (showing him a plate of grapes)." Oh the tears that followed. Once he got self-control, I reminded him "it's always important to come when your name is called, whether you want to or not"
It is so wonderful to have a good foundation of first-time obedience established because then one little test like this will bring it back into line without a lot of work. I used to do this with the older three when they were younger. One time I called their names and they all came except for one. The treat that day was a piece of cake!!!!

sounds like you handled it wonderfully! And I so agree, having that foundation of first time obedience sets the stage for all our character and heart training. Great job!
