Feb. 16, 2006 - Rise and Shine
It's 7:25 a.m. here and I've already separated my 9 yr old and 6 yr old.
They manage to bicker about almost anything!
I wish I had set the alarm clock for me to get up at 6. Then I would have had my time with the Lord without having to put a blanket over my head or hiding out in my closet. ( don't feel bad-- it's a walk-in)
I was just thinking about my kids' bedrooms-- or should I say what's on their walls. Hope (6) has her girly room with a Disney Princess poster and pasted on fairies throughout the room.
Mark (9) has his Red Sox and Patriots theme going on.
Kayla (13) has a mish-mash of "stuff". Sometimes I have to bite my tongue when I go in there. It's usually a mess and I know there really is a desk underneath all that stuff. She has pictures of her favorite celebrities "du jour". She has an American Idol poster and a Johnny Depp ( Pirates of the Caribbean) poster.
I know, I know. Shame on me for allowing "the world" into our home. I don't allow her to watch half of the movies she would like to. We are selective with TV. Music is an ongoing battle, I admit.
I remember being in middle school and thinking Rick Springfield and Loverboy were so cool.
In high school, I loved Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Duran Duran. Man, do I feel old.
My IRL friends can't relate with having a teenager in the house.
Any sage advice for loving your teen/ enjoying the teen years?
BTW, I recently picked up The Power of a Praying Parent by Stormie Omartian . What an awesome book!
Wishing you a blessed day! Cheryl

no sage advice for raising teens - but I hope you get some! My 10 yr old is starting on his early, I think... I feel old as well - I was a Duranie too! At one of our homeschool group history lessons, something was mentioned that led to me getting out an old photograph album showing me on a motorbike. The comments from the children - hmm, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!

I read where you are starting one of the Jeannie Fulbrights books. Anxious to hear how it goes with it. My grandson likes Astronomy so my daughter has thought about getting that one. Check out my site. My younger daughter posted my avatar behind my back. Yep, it's Johhny Depp. She has a poster portrait of him as the pirate. Of course it is siting above my desk, goes with the rolltop style antique look of the desk. Advice for raising a teen hmm.... I have raised four all different personalities at at different times of the family life. ( With the dad and without him unfortunately so I have had to deal with very hurt kids.) Love them unconditionally. Listen to them, really listen to them but then stick to your rules. Give them as much freedom as possible in the safe areas. Check out some books froma Christian store and decide which advice you want to keep. And the Stormie Omartian book is excellent. I know I have made tons of mistakes with mine but prayer and praise time with God and covering the kids with prayer is the best cure for mistakes. Blessings! (Oh and before I was a Christian I nursed my first one in the wee hours listening to James Morrison's Riders in the Storm. This baby is now a youth director at a church and loves the Lord dearly. He has a Christian wife from Ukraine and a beautiful baby daughter. So God took care of him. )

I'd like to recommend a few books.
"Keeping Our Children's Hearts" by Steve and Teri Maxwell (titus2.com)
"Romancing Your Child's Heart" by Monte Swan
"Age of Opportunity" by Ted Tripp
"Power of a Praying Parent" is a good resource. I like to keep a prayer journal to put it into action.
I also believe that the most important part of parenting is discipling our children.
They need to be taught God's Truths on a daily, constant routine.
We are raising them in a spiritual war zone and they need to be well equipped.
I also find that spending one on one time with them, enjoying them, works wonders.
By the way, thank you for signing my blog.
