Feb. 22, 2008 - Show N Tell - Cumberland Island
For other great Shown N Tell Friday posts or to participate yourself, please visit Mary at Canadagirl!
A couple of years ago on our "big adventure RV trip", we visited Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia. This was one of my all time favorite places that we visited.
Thanks to inspiration from Deborah at DebsPlace, I've actually started a travel blog about our travels, so to see more of the Cumberland National Seashore and more, please visit Cottage on Wheels!
You can only visit the island by taking a ferry over. Here are some dolphins that were having fun following our boat.
One of the most famous sites on the island are the ruins of Dungeness, a Scottish castle built by Thomas Carnegie in 1884. In 1859, it burned to the ground in a fire of unkown origin.
One of my favorite things to see on the island were the feral horses. About 150 horses still roam the island, thought to have been brought here in the 1500's by Spanish Missionaries.
Here's my darling daughter (with her bear) walking on the boardwalks through the salt marsh.
The beautiful beach! You walk the beaches here in almost complete solitude. Only 300 people are allowed on the island each day, but most of the time we were wondering where everyone was. On the beach we were able to find a lot of beautiful shells and had fun watching the shore birds and the sea life.
Most of the island is a beautiful maritime forest with huge live oaks trees draped with spanish moss. The island is also teeming with wildlife.
After walking all day on the island (there are no cars!) we were ready to sit a spell while we waited for the ferry!
I like Cumberland Island too. While we were spending a day there last year, it rained the entire time we were there. We wound up walking down the beach in the pouring rain. We like to vacation at Jekyll Island and drive over for a day to visit Cumberland. Can't wait to visit your travel blog.

Looks like such a beautiful place. The dolphins are amazing. I love the travel blog and look forward to reading more. I read this morning - a real tonic lol.

How very special. And I"m jealous of the gorgeous blue skies. The scenery is great and it looks like you had a super time. That castle was very cool. Can you go wander around in the ruins?
Oh, I have only heard of this island !!! That must be sooooooo neat to actually go there. What a beautiful site. Thank you soooo much for sharing with us.
Those where great photos! I really like the picture of the horse!I will visit your travel blog soon. :) Oh, we also had a great time on Elijahs birthday.
The weather has been mild and beautiful. We've had a couple of thunderstorms in the afternoon, but unfortunately we need a lot more rain. I absolutely love throwing open the windows and letting the fresh air in and listening to the chorus of songbirds.
~June 22~
Today we saw a deer in the woods. She stopped for a long time to look at us, as we were looking at her. She was so beautiful! Rhododendrens are now blooming in the mountains.
~June 21~
Saw our first lightning bugs last night. Now I know summer is really here!
~June 20~
Today is the earliest summer soltice in 112 years! We've had a beautiful summer-like week here. It's been almost perfect weather - not to hot, a beautiful breeze and clear blue skies. Although we need more rain, I was thankful that my daughter had a beautiful weather week at camp. I am starting to see the blueberries budding on the bushes - can't wait! Our dog is finding great pleasure in chasing all the butterflies - and I'm sure they are having fun teasing him. Lots of gorgeous yellow Goldfinches flying around where we live as well as the ever impressive Cardinals. I'm sure enjoying the laid-back feel of summer.
~June 11~
It's finally cooler today! We've had 5 straight days of record breaking heat. It's only supposed to get in the mid 80's today. Had a nice thunderstorm and rain shower yesterday. Much needed as we are in quite the drought right now. Seeing lots of rabbits on our walk today and one beautiful Cardinal. They have to be one of the prettiest birds around.
~March 15~
Windy, rain and thunderstorms!
~March 9~
A beautiful sunshiny day! Saw our first wild daffodils today! Love them! You know spring's on the way when you start to see them blooming.
~March 8~
Started out pretty warm, progessively got colder till we had snow flurries!
~March 7~
Rain again today! We so need it, so no complaints.
~March 6~
Starting to see little buds on the trees.
~March 5~
Rained almost the whole day! We really needed the rain. Despite all the water, the birds were having a grand ole time flying around and chirping away. What joy the sound of birds are, heralding in the soon-to-be springtime.
