One of my favorite books is Swiss Family Robinson. It starts with the Robinson family getting shipwrecked, their boat smashed on the rocks and all the sailors abandoning them. They make a raft of the left over wood, and go to an island where they make a temporary house on the ground, and later they make a grand house in a tree. The pirates that made their ship run into the storm come and try to attack them, but the Robinson family is waiting for them. They made coconut bombs, which were coconut shells with the coconut juice taken out, and filled with gunpowder and a wick for a fuse. They tied logs up with rope so that when the pirates climbed up the hill they could cut the rope and all the logs would fall down on top of them. They had gunpowder buried in the earth with wicks so that when the pirates tried to sneak up on them, they could light them and they would explode. In the end the mother and father stay on the island with Fritz their oldest son and Roberta, who escaped from the pirates. The island becomes New Switzerland. I’ll mention the tape for younger children, the book for ones that can read, and the movie for ten-year-olds and up.
