Once A Homeschooler...

Graduated!

I am now an official homeschool graduate, and boy, have things in my life changed.

I work almost all the time now, while going to community college and getting ready to go to a university in Fall 2007. I am learning to play the piano, because I am going to major in music education and I plan on teaching choir. And, needless to say, learning the piano is a must!:)

So, my life is pretty much consumed with: God, family, work, school, friends and music. When am I supposed to blog? But, I'd like to. So, here I am.

Vocal Competition

I'm performing in a Solo competition in a month. I had this song picked out, but I really only picked it because many people have told me that judges around here enjoy songs in other languages. I didn't really like the Italian song I picked, but found one in English I did like.

I decided that I'd rather just compete with the English song and enjoy the competition, than sing an Italian song that I don't enjoy that well for the sake of placing well.

Woohoo! I can't wait till next month!

Bad Company

I was talking to a friend on the phone today about bad company. We both expressed our frustration with the difficulties of being a teenage girl and dealing with bad friends. Girls today are involved in so many terrible things, but it's sad, because most of them need good friends. However, my friend and I struggle with not wanting to be their friends.

Where do you draw the line, exactly? Where do you help these girls out, but in a situation where you yourself don't feel dragged down?

We do the best we can. We go talk to a school counselor if there is big trouble. We talk to our parents frequently about the troubles these girls are dealing with. We pray for them unceasingly. We pray that the condition of the souls of teenage girls will change. We pray that we can be an example, and a friend when these girls realize it's time to change.

And that's all we can do, because spending lot's of valuable time with them is not wise.

After all, "Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'"1 Corinthians 15:33

Homeschooled once more...

I decided to stop going to the public high school, and start homeschooling myself again. I made this decision for a few reasons: my credits, from the move, were not transferring well. I also wanted my own hours, and the oppurtunity to get a job if possible. But, most importantly, I felt like I needed better education. The classes they offer at the local high school don't offer, I feel, the best options for me, so I decided I wanted to take control of my education.

It's an adjustment, that's for sure. I am alone most of the day; both the parents work, and the three siblings go to public school now. The past two days I've had serious motivational issues, but I know if I get up a little earlier I can achieve the things I intend to during the day.

I plan on updating this journal a lot more, and building upon it. We shall see how this new homeschool adventure ensues...

Vanity

It's so funny that I am so very in love with my vanity. I always wanted a vanity to put my makeup on, to sit at, to have little drawers to put little things in to and I remember when we moved here that I finally got my vanity.

Now I have to get rid of it, and even though it's just piece of furniture, I am so sad that I don't get to keep it.

You know the feeling when your cheeks hurt from trying to not cry? That's how my cheeks feel right now.

And all of this over a piece of furniture.

Group Projects

I have grown to despise group projects. I am very self-directed, and dislike having to rely on someone else to do something that I could very well do myself, and will very well most likely have to fix, change or build it myself.

Part of a test we took on Friday was a group project. I was getting so agitated with one of the members in my group that I wanted to feign death so I could go home. But, I do have a lot of leadership qualities that other kids at school do not have, so I can go into the majority group projects and take leadership, so that they are run correctly and my grade isn't affected in a negative way.

I wish my mom would update her blog. I love reading it.

Moving On

We're moving.

I was not okay with this last night. I am still not a hundred percent okay with it now, but I am just going to do my best to help us be able to stay around here.

I am going to work on supporting my parents through this. I am going to work on being okay no matter where God puts us. I am going to work on not being so extremely angry about why we have to move in the first place.

I'm going to enjoy this small amount of time I have with my boyfriend.

And I'm only going to cry half the day tomorrow instead of 3/4 of the day.

Runny Lashes

My mascara always starts to run halfway through the day and it stinks, because I am at school and I can't just wash it off. That just doesn't happen.

Stink.

The Wheels on the Bus

There are just some things that take a little longer than others to get used to. For me, riding the bus was one of them. Here are a few things everyone should know about the bus:

1. The bus doesn't wait. This isn't like having parents to drive you around whenever you need them to; you are on a time schedule.

2. Just because there are rules on the bus, doesn't mean people follow them.

3. Sit in the front. All of the bad kids sit in the back because they don't want the bus driver to hear how dirty they talk. If you want to perserve your ears, then sit as far up to the front as you can.

4. Most people are grumpy in the morning. Just because you were brought up to be polite no matter what the circumstances are (for example, you haven't slept for weeks on end and you are now sitting on the bus), doesn't mean that everyone else is. If the person next to you initiates a conversation, then you can continue it.

5. Try to get your own seat. If you do, you have power over what happens in the seat. You control the space. When someone shares a seat with you, you make the rules.

6. Don't leave your backpack in the center aisle. Most people don't look where they are walking.

7. Food and drink are not allowed on the bus. No questions asked.

8. A good idea is to bring a CD player and listen so you don't have to hear the meaningless conversations held between all members riding the bus.

I am still not used to the bus. I don't know if I ever will be. There will always be things about the bus that I won't understand.

Time Management

The hardest thing for me about going from being homeschooled my entire life to being a public schooler was finally understanding the concept of time management. This was a term rarely mentioned amongst homeschooling families. It was very unpractical to assume that I would have almost no changes to my schedule and still have perfect grades. I was amazed to find that I had a C in two classes by the end of the first two weeks of going to school.

Why was this, you ask? I didn't know that they were serious when they said that the homework had to be turned in on time. I didn't understand why I couldn't just come home after school and play rehearsal and just randomly take a nap! I figured I could just read or get on the computer or call my friends and turn in my homework assignments a few days late. WRONG! I had to make a schedule.

Weekdays:
6:00 Wake up
6:00-7:15 Get ready for school
7:15-3:40 School (this includes grueling bus ride)
4:00-5:30 Math tutoring and the daily chiropractor appointment
5:30-6:00 Dinner
6:00-9:30 Homework, family time
9:30-10:00 Get ready for bed

The only variations occur on Fridays, in which I have not only all of that, but a football game.

Time management...it's an amazing concept.
