Remember I mentioned how my son completed a lapbook from homeschoolshare.com? Well, he got to present it last week at our Science coop class. I am really impressed now with homeschoolshare.com. They have a huge section of FREE lapbooks; but they also have a huge section of FREE minibook templates! -- blank minibooks so you can lapbook about whatever you want... Starting May 1st; you can win some amazing prizes for submitting your unit studies, lapbook designs, and other shareable work to homeschoolshare! Read all about it by clicking on the Blast graphic up above...
Anyway, I wanted to share pictures of Jonathan presenting, and then all of the boys with their lapbooks. Clara is making a picture book to present next week; and so is Anna, so I will post pictures of their projects later. Jonathan's book was all about Eagles.

Comparison Between Live and Learn lapbooks and Knowledge Box Central's lapbooks

Live and Learn
Points to consider
• You buy one unit that has 5 files for easier downloading. Ebook an CD are the same price..$25
• You use 8½ X 11 card stock that you 3 hole punch and place in your notebook to attach the booklets to. It all neatly laid out with each lesson and its booklets all together. Each lesson has an intro page for your notebook that you can easily put a tab on to separate the lessons. Then it's followed by that lesson's layout guide, then the assembly and study guide...telling how to cut and fold each booklet and where to find the answers in the Apologia book, followed by the actual booklets that you will print out.
• Each booklet’s directions tells the type of booklet it is and they have videos on their website that shows how to fold many of the booklets.
• This had much more information, it’s clear and concise and easy to use.
Knowledge Box Central
• You purchase 2 files the first covers lessons 1-6 and the second is lessons 7-14. Each ebook is $18.49 ($36.98 to cover the whole book) There is extra cost for CDs and preprinted.
• You use 4 file folders fastened together for the Lessons 1-6 lapbook and another 4 file folders fastened together for the Lessons 7-14 lapbook.
• The layout guide is at the beginning of each file. The booklets are scattered though out the folders where they fit not necessarily in lesson order. You could have a booklet from lesson 1 on the first page of the file folder and another one on another page later on. You have to search the file to find which booklet goes with which lesson.
• I do like that they have links to go with each lessons for more information but you also get that with Apologia book.

Hands Of A Child Review: Sun Lapbook
Have you heard of lapbooks yet? On the loops I am on, it seems like they are the latest buzz. I am not converting over to a lapbook only homeschooler or anything, but I have discovered that my children love them. Recently, the company called In The Hands of A Child; offered anyone a free lapbook in exchange for a review of that lapbook. I took the bait :). This is my review.
In the Hands of A Child is a great company with great products and the Sun lapbook is no exception. No baloney. The company is comprised of three extremely helpful ladies. For instance, when I bought a super membership in November, I didn't realize I had already purchased the November member lapbook. The very helpful ladies sent me my choice of one of the last five member lapbooks to make up for it! They didn't have to, I should have been paying attention! But they did it anyway. Another example is their fast response to questions posted to the Hands of A Child yahoogroup. Like all of their other products I have completed, the Sun lapbook is very easy to use. In one evening, just a couple hours in fact, I was able to read the information section, complete all of the activities myself, and choose which activities would be appropriate for my young children. The lapbook is written for 3rd grade and up; my children are 2nd grade and down. I have found, however, that all of the upper elementary lapbooks have plenty of activities appropriate for younger children. To accomplish this, I choose enough simple activities to fill one file folder. Since the In the Hands of A Child lapbooks usually (always? I don't have them all yet lol,) fill 2-3 file folders, finding enough simple ones to fill one file folder hasn't ever been a problem. The next day, while my children did math and phonics, I cut, folded, and pasted my minibooks onto my lapbook. I actually used posterboard, cut to the size of a file folder because we were out of file folders. Once I show my children the completed project, they are always ready to go! In this case, we have been reading all about the sun in Jeannie Fulbright's book called Exploring Creation with Astronomy so my children were already prepared with lots of information, and we just looked up a few specifics. I did not just let them copy my answers, but by making a sample for them, they were able to easily see how to spell an answer once they could prove to me they knew it :). If you wanted to or needed to, you could simply read aloud the text from the information section included in every project pack. After a lapbook is completed comes my favorite part -- show and tell -- lapbooks are a perfect, fun way to share with Daddy what you did in school! So, whenever you are ready to give lapbooks a try, head on over to http://handsofachild.com and check them out.
The bottom line is; We try not to insist on parent-led learning or gravitate toward child-led learning. We try instead to focus on God-led learning and ask for His input and perspective on every aspect of our home school. That way, when others fuss about what Dan and I are doing and make me second guess our decisions -- I can go back to our decision process and find God's fingerprints, reminding me that this is His way.
