The name of the child in this story is fictious (I do not have a son named Fred) in order to not embarrass my old-enough-to-know-better son!
I have been teaching grammar for what - 11 or 12 years. Our oldest is 17 now so it has to be at least that long. I am getting tired of it. Tired of the parts of speech, sentence structure, editing, blah, blah, blah. And with my youngest being only 8 I have quite a few years to go. I think it would be much easier to stomach if teaching grammar seemed relevant. I have a hard time coming up with a good response to their "when are we ever going to use this stuff?" question. Not the skill of communicating - but the nitty gritty grammar. When in life do you ever sit down with a good book and stop mid sentence to ponder on what a good prepositional phrase that was?
Anyway, I plug on. So I couldn't help but crack up laughing when my son named "Fred" wanted to write his name on the front of his notebook to let everyone know whose it is. He asked . . .
"Mom - when I am writing "FREDS book"
should I put the comma in the air before the s?"
The comma in the air? What the heck is he talking about?
It took me a minute to realize he was asking if he should put an apostrophe in his name.
A comma in the air - now I've never heard that one before! That was too funny!
I can't blame him: adverbs, verb tenses, clauses, prepositions - It sounds pretty boring to me too.
Comma in the air - Yeah, we're making progress alright.
We are a homeschooling family raising 4 boys in Virginia. This blog is mostly about anything relevant to raising boys or homeschooling in general - but every once in a while I can't help but add some nonsense from our daily life.

And, about the toilet paper -- just be happy they don't use as much as a house full of girls -- you'd be changing the roll a lot more OFTEN! :)
