Don't spill the milk--make pudding!
Last Thursday I went to Walgreens after my math class to pick up a few things. They had Nature's Bounty items buy-one-get-one-free. Walgreens usually has a decent milk price too. Thursday was no exception, $3.59 a gallon. It was $3.89 at the grocery store, so I decided to go ahead and get two gallons since I needed to do some baking this weekend for the Historian's birthday. I studied the selection and picked out one gallon of 2% with an expiration date of 10/12 and a gallon of fat free with an expiration date of 10/18. Sounds reasonable doesn't it?
Well, when I got home, I discovered that my 10/18 expiration date was actually 10/10. Yikes! I have two gallons of milk ready to expire in short order. What to do? What to do?
Thursday: Gave Historian his birthday present early. It was a Magic Bullet. I got a great deal on it with the help of a good friend. It was only $37!! The Historian loves to make milkshakes.
Friday: Made pancakes. That took 2 cups of milk. Later I made the Historian his birthday dessert, a chocolate pudding pie. Lucky for me that's one of his favorite desserts. That used up 1 quart.
Saturday: Uh-oh. The 10/10 milk was already heading south. I plan to use it for baking muffins later on. I opened up the 10/12 gallon of milk and used it for cereal. My family almost never eats cereal with milk for breakfast. We finished up the pie at supper.
Today: The 10/12 milk still smelled good, but the members of my family are not heavy milk drinkers. I made another chocolate pudding pie and a pot of potato soup.
Thank God we aren't lactose intolerant.
Here's my chocolate pudding recipe. It's simple and delicious.
