marriage part 4 family part 2

Continuing on with family and marriage, I want to talk about raising the kids. Again this is how I want to raise my kids; this is what I see as being the best way to raise Godly children who will spend their life’s doing God’s work. I know there may be or could be thing that will make it hard to do this but remember this is my plane and as you all keep telling me and what I DO know, plane can change, thing can happen to prevent all my planes from turning out the way I want them to, but I am still going to try to do them the way I’m planning.

Where to start…ok we will start with bed time stories, what are good or proper bed time stories for children being raised to do great th`ings for God? I so strongly think all “holiday” character stories and all “Disney” type stories are WRONGE. I will not tell my children any “fairy tall’s”. Why not bring them up with things that matter? How about right before bed we read a passage from the Bible or a chapter from the Under God, Foxx’s Book of Martyrs, Little Pilgrims Progress, Sir Knight of the Splendid Way, even Narnia. What would be wrong with any of those, at least those are thing that will strengthen the faith, even as a child. I know they may not always understand what I’ll be reading to them, but they will know those stories, other children know The Little Mermaid, or Santa Clouse, or any of the common bed time stories.

Now what about TV or movies? Well I have already decided not to have cable, we will have a TV but it will be for movies. I don’t want movies I wouldn’t let my kids see, so that means I will have to learn to do without. There’s something you should know about me I LOVE my movies. I have more movies than my family has (we have our family movies and then I have my movies…like the one I bought or people gave me) my list of movies is prity good for a 18 year old with no “real” job. Movies like Braveheart, Patch Atoms, Lord of the Rings, and Indiana Jones to name a few. I watch all the time, but this is something that I’ve been thinking about and I think I don’t want them in my house. How can I tell my kids these movies are your and these are mine and mommies? When I think about it if I don’t want my kids to watch them, there’s a good chance God doesn’t want me to watch them. I feel that if I kept them and didn’t let my kids watch then I would be a hypocrite, and I don’t want that.

So our movies will be thing like: Left Behind 1-3, Six, Passion of the Christ, Veggie tails, One Night with the King, the odd testament character movies like Joseph, Jacob, and Abraham. Movies that will benefit all of us, one that we would really watch with Jesus, really ask what would Jesus do before turning it on and these are the only types of movies I can think of that He would watch.

Sounds interesting.

P.S. Kids rebel, its in their nature. If you DO have ten you're gonna have your hands full. Your restrictive rules will likely work in the beginning but I've got a feeling that will change.

P.P.S. You're beliefs of what Jesus would watch may not be the same of other Christians. If you have ten kids one of them is bound to find out there's another world outside of the one you're going to try to make for them.

P.P.P.S. I'm speaking out of the experience of watching and learning from other families. I don't have my own kids of course.

Hi Brett, as a mother with ten kids I think you have great ideas. With my oldest two boys I was very, very strict about what they watched and then I got more relaxed with some of my younger ones. Kids are so impressionable and you are right to be concerned with what goes into their minds. My oldest son rebelled only after going to public high school for the last two years of school. I learned a hard lesson, and didn't allow my second son to go to public highschool and he has never rebelled. My point is that it is very good to limit what they watch, and also realize that public school will expose them to even more then the tv. That may be another topic though. :)

Hmmm....what about movies like The Lion King? Why wouldn't Jesus watch that movie? It's got a lot of actual facts in it, and it teaches good lessons. Movies like that can't do any harm.

However, I do know where you're coming from. That's why I seriously consider the content of movies before I watch them.

ok, well let me try to get to most these thing you all had asked and said.

first, remember i have 8 siblings anyway, me and my sister (the one closest to my age, nikki) were raised the same way. we are only 15 months aparet and we we always together we went to see dad just us and every thing eles+we had all the same friends. but now we couldnt be more dierant, i've just got'n closer and closer to God and she's gone farther and farther away from Him. she is literly the oposet of me, most the things i stand for she now doesnt care about. now why is that? i believe it because she went with more outside infewences and i didnt. so take out the main outside infewances and she would be more like me.
the other thing is just because i want to controll want they (my future kids) see and hear dosent mean i'll be uber striked, on those things yes, but if thats all they know why would they questan it? im not planeing on being one of those parenst who make there kids do everything there way, there will be plunty of thing im not going to worry about.

thank you for agreeing. you have had alot of exspereance in rayseing kids you know what im talking about.

and as for movies like the Lion King...Its a Disney movie, witch mean watching a movie from a company that suports thing that i am SO agenst would be me suporting them too. dont get me wrong i love many Disney movies and i have desided not to watch them anymore, or suport anything eles thruogh them, such as Disney word, and the Disney chanile.

witch bring me to something i forgot to say...i will not be haveing any TV staytions, we will only have a TV to watch the movies. I KNOW its so odd

In real life (not my story character that I like to post with on my blog), we have a TV too but we don't have the antenna hooked up, we use it only for watching movies.

I like fairy tales myself (hence my fairytale character for my blog), but I do think that there shouldn't be a lot of them or else we might 'drift off' into a fairy tale world and lose touch with the real world. That is something I need to be careful with since I like fiction so much.

Btw, if you'd like to visit me at my real blog, the one that I actually post at without my make believe character. It is at homeschoolblogger.com/thedoghouse

May. 13, 2008 - Great article!

This is a really great article.

I too don't want to just read any stories to my children. My thoughts are if they aren't true and don't in some way help my children's walk with Christ, then they are unneccesary. Bible stories are going to be the best things for them to hear as children. That way they will have the Word in their minds and will grow up knowing about God.
Lamplighter books are really good. I do not read any new books myself. I like classics. I have just started reading Foxes Book of Martyrs' and it is amazing. Some of the books you mentioned are good ones too! ;)

This is funny to me that the topic of the article about is watching and reading things that are good or bad for us. I have been struggling and praying over the fact that I *LOVE* to watch movies and not all of them are the best thing to watch. I love Smallville, but it is not a very savory show. I have been struggling because I don't want to give it up, but I know I probably should.
You are totally right though, how can we as parents watch something that our children shouldn't. But I think that watching some movies that are historical are ok to watch. Braveheart only has a few parts that aren't very good, but I think its ok to watch the movie. Movies like that are ok, I think.
We don't watch tv either. Just movies. There is never anything worth watching on tv anyway, so why waste time just watching whatever is on?

The only thing I disagree with you is about Veggie Tales, One Night With The King, and the Left Behind series. I do not think those are good movies. Its one thing when we watch secular movies we know that somethings are wrong, but when Christians twist the Bible like they do in the above movies and you don't know the story down pat, it makes you think that is the way it happened. ONWTK was totally and completely wrong. The story was all wrong. VT makes it too fun and they are too pop culture.

Alex, not all kids rebel. I have a sister who is living proof of that. She is an amazing example of a teenager who was raised to love correction and she has never rebelled. Me on the other hand, haha, thats a different story.I rebelled because I was worldly and wanted what I wanted. I didn't want what the Lord wanted for my life.
If you teach your children right and wrong and what is Biblical and worldly and teach them to love correction, I do not believe that all children will rebel.

I don't think that its about control. Its about being a parent and doing what is best for your children. Being a parent means you control what they see, do, hear, and say. But its not a control issue. Its a parental authority issue and it is what God has given you as a parent over your children.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I really do like the premise of this article. I think it is really good to think about these things. Great article, Brett! Really enjoyed it!
Hope this isn't too long! :P

Prayers and Blessings,
Miss Amanda

May. 13, 2008 - This is in response to Alyssa's last response

Posted by Azrael2112314
The reason I think that fairy tales can be told (at parental discretion of course) to children is because although they are fiction a great deal of them hold truths about life. Now call me worldly for saying that because I never mentioned the Bible in my previous sentence but if you can look past your own developed bias you can see that a number of these fairy tales are similar to certain Bible passages (I said similar NOT exact).

I've seen Smallville. I'm not a HUGE fan of the show but I've seen some similarities. I don't think you should give up a tv show that never mentions Jesus or the Bible. Once again. The show wouldn't be any good if it didn't have any good writers. They certainly know their stuff (and I'm implying that quite a few of them have probably read the bible, or fairy tales, or both, and most definitely the Superman series in DC comics). I don't think the show is inherently wrong because it doesn't blatantly display Christianity.

Alyssa, ever thought the reason that you like this show is because it contains elements that you like that are similar to other Christian things that you like even though the show isn't technically a Christian show?

As for Veggie Tales... what's wrong with it? Just because they're trying to connect to kids doesn't mean the kids are going to grow up to be a bunch of warped bible-quoters. If the kids are decently smart they'll become curious and ACTUALLY read the bible for themselves. Veggie Tales is NOT warped its simply made understandable for a younger audience. The writers and producers of that cartoon aren't dumb. They're expecting the parents to be present and to answer questions that the show is bound to spark in the kids.

I'm aware all kids don't rebel. I never did, not really. I guess it was subtle but I was never an official rebel. I was just myself and sometimes I disagreed with people. I also love correction, hence my current argument. But eventually those kids are going to grow up and want to become independant like you and me and they're not going to want to their five senses controlled by their parents. Parents also have to let go but only when the time is right.

This response to you, Alyssa, is not meant as an insult, I apologize if it sounds like one. Its simply an argument from a Christian with some different views.

im so glad this artical has gotten so much dicussion, it maks me happy ;). now for my input...

ok, miss amanda i'll start with what you said. im going through the same thing, there are many movies and a few TV shows that i love and i really want to watch them, but there not doing any good for me.now to our disogreement; Breavehart is one of my faveret movies, but its so infacual and it has the one nude seen and it show William comiting adultre and there is no prof he did that. William was studdieing to be a Priest before being thown into a rage. the movie has so much in it thats wrong and give him not that good of a rep. and now to the movies i think are ok and you dont. Vegie tail first, i mostly agree with Alex on this one. where as i dont like the movies they make you are very right they are not truthfull, the short video i do like. they show how we should act in a really good way for kids, but there movies on spisifec bible passeges are very increct, i agree that those are not good and i dont want my kids to see them. One Night with the King dose have some things that arent really right but it is the best Esther movie i've seen. and Lef Behind...that is something i've been strugling with. i dont think its very factule, but what the end times will be like is not really known to us, most of it is just what we take from reading revalation, we cant know all of it. so i think movies like this i will wait to show them to them is they want to see them. when i made the list in my last entry it was to show the tyeps of movies i'll have not what will be in my movie cass.

Yeah, I defintely agree with you that kids shouldn't be fed fluffy stories like fairy tales. when I was little, my parents decided that instead of telling me fairy tales and stupid stories, they were going to bring us up on Bible stories or stories from good books, like my mom bought all these mennonite story books that taught things like being obedient and respectful. I think that's so much better, cause little kids will believe everything they hear, so isn't it better to teach them things like Bible stories or stories with meaing, like narnia?
