marriage part 5 family part 3

Ok the next point I want to go over is Holidays. What Holidays is my family going to celebrate? How are we going to celebrate them? And what will we tell our kids? Now I know some of you know how crazy I am but this and you’ve told me what you think, but please comment anyway.

So I’m going to start at the beginning of the year and moving through, I’m not going to talk about every one, just the main ones. So first is new years, and I don’t see anything wrong with doing something for new years. But, I do see something wrong with the way most people celebrate it. So the way I want to celebrate it with my family will be; staying with them (like not going out with the wife and leaving the kids at home) I think I’ll just make it a special day. Like maybe do something a little different, do some more than normal gamey or fun thing. Maybe get or fix up some fun food and just make it a good fun day.

The next Holiday is Valentine’s Day, and I think this Holiday is one of the dumbest Holidays there is. I think it is one of the reasons husbands don’t do good or nice thing for and with their wives the rest of the year. Now the other thing about it is cupid, you know who I’m talking about, the Roman god of love. So yes we celebrate a Holiday for the Roman god of love, and I think that is wrong. The other thing it does is make young people think they need to date and if you don’t have somebody you feel left out and like a misfit.

Next is St. Patrick’s Day. Now I will be celebrating this great Holiday. It’s so sad that not many people really know who he is. So let me fill you in on a few things. So St. Patrick is not Irish, he’s English. Now the reason he’s so cool is because he single handedly converted the entire Island of Ireland from there pagan and druid believes to Christianity, after he was one of their slaves for 10 years. So this to me is a very important Holiday and I think we should do a lot more with this one, but more as in things really about him not just more things we do now.

Now it’s time for the Holiday that has the wrong name, so I’m going to call it by its real name not the fake one, I will go over why it has a fake name. Resurrection Sunday is the most important holiday, the day our Lord Jesus rose from the dead and made the way for us to get into heaven. But unfortunately we as a whole celebrate it wrong. First off by calling it Easter, Easter was a pagan holiday going on at the same time Christ was crucified and it was a holiday to honor the gods and goddesses of the earth. It was always done the first part of spring they were thanking the gods for the rebirth of the earth, things were starting to bloom and babies were being born, which is why we use bunnies and eggs they’re a symbol of fertility. We do NOT celebrate Easter. I could go on and on about this but I wont for now.

The next one on my list is….Mothers day (I think to save time I’m going to put Fathers day in with this). Now I think we all agree that this is an important day, it is good to set aside a day to the mothers and fathers, I mean they did do a lot for us. But do you think that this can or has lead to not honoring them enough the rest of the year? Have we forgetting to always respect them and show them that we really do appreciate them? Have we made it harder to be truly good children by putting a day on the calendar that is to be just for them. Now don’t get me wrong, think it’s great to have a day for them, but does that help others not give them the respect they should have every other day of the year?

I know there are more Holidays than the ones I’ve mentioned but this are the ones I want to talk about; I don’t mean to say the other ones are not important. So the next one I’m talking about is Independence Day. Now this is a very important day for our Country, and all the other Democracies in the world, but do we look at this Day right. I think this day should be spent by remembering what our founding fathers wanted and did for us, this should be a day to remember what they went through to do what they did, and a day to remind us that we don’t give up because things look like we can’t win. We the underdogs won then and we as Christians (the underdogs) need to remember that just because it looks imposable it doesn’t mean it over; we can still pull through and win.

All right now it’s time for the controversial one…Halloween; this is most definitely a holiday that we as Christian should not be a part of. This holiday was started as a pagan tradition by druids, they would kill a animal hollow out its head then us it as a mask so that the evil spirits couldn’t see them and if they found someone who wasn’t wearing a mask they would say “trick or treat” meaning give me a treat or I’ll play a trick on you. Now these trick aren't little practical jokes, they would be things like; kidnapping their kids, burning down their house, killing their livestock, and in some cases killing them. Now I know that that’s not how it is now or what people do, I know most people don’t even know where it came from, but by us continuing this evil tradition we keep something very evil in nature here and alive.

Next come Thanksgiving; there is only one thing I really see wrong with Thanksgiving, when we have our big thanksgiving dinner we become gluttons and that’s something we are never to do, whether we’re having a feast or not. I think its good to have a big meal for Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean we should eat until their sick, or eat so much that part way through the meal you need to unbutton your pants because you eat so much, that’s WRONG. I think the way we should do the food part of Thanksgiving more like we eat things that we don’t get to eat very often. It is a very special day, it’s great to meet with family and friends to keep reminding ourselves how much we are thankful for. But that doesn’t mean we need to eat until we throw up.

And last but not least…..Christmas; now I will tell you now I hate Christmas. I love Jesus’ birthday, but that’s not what Christmas is anymore, so I don’t like it. Now I really don’t care if you think I’m a Scrooge or the Grinch because I very firmly believe when something turns from what it was meant to be into something it’s not i needs to be fixed and that’s what I’m going to try to do. First its in like the one month that it would most likely not be in. it’s more likely to be in early summer or fall not the middle of winter. The next thing is there reason for picking 12/25, it was because there was so much evil things going on in this time of the year that they wanted to even it out. People spent so much time on Santa and that part of the holiday and spend almost no time on Christ’s birth, all people in the world (ok maybe not all people) celebrate Christmas and most of them don’t care about Jesus, some even hate him and they thinks it’s wrong to have Jesus in any part of Christmas. THIS IS HOW WE SHOULD FEEL ABOUT WHAT THEY DID TO THIS GREAT DAY!!!!! But we don’t…why? I better stop here because if I don’t I’ll go on and on…but I wrote a sermon on it (kind of, it’s about lots of what I don’t like about Christmas but not as much I wanted it to be) it’s on my other blog the on titled brettsermons so if you want read it.

whoa. dude. okay, hope you don't mind, but...
1. Valentine's day. You could still celebrate Valentine's day if you treat it like wife's day or someone dear to me day or something. Girls like Valentine's b/c it makes them feel special, so you can blow off cupid and spend the day focusing on how great God is for bringing the two of you together!
2.i totally agree with what you said about hallowee.
3.Christmas is way too commercial. And yeah, taking CHRIST out of CHRISTmas is retarded. (you know that mas means more, right?) that it's in December is okay with me b/c i don't know exactly when He was born, but we focua too much on Santa and gifts and what not. it's horrible!

Wow! I agree with everything... Except I would have a little more fun on New Years... I mean, it's only once a year, right? Buy a lot of junk food and stay up until midnight. I like your blog. It has truth!

May. 24, 2008 - My thoughts on the holidays

1) The New Year's idea you have is a good one.
2) Valentine's Day isn't dumb in my book. I think you're wrong when you say people use it to celebrate Cupid's existence. That's just silly. I don't know anyone who purposefully celebrates that day to "worship" Cupid. Its about couples who want an excuse to do something fun with their significant other.
3) That is also a good idea you have for St. Patrick's day.
4) I understand your problem with Easter. But as long as you're making things clear for your family then you're on the right track.
5) Once again father's/mother's day is like Valentine's Day. It is an excuse to have a special day set aside for your parents. It isn't an excuse to ignore your parents for the other 364 days of the year. That would be dumb.
6) Independence Day is just fine. But as long as the message as made clear to your family it will be better.
7) Halloween isn't evil. We don't celebrate by kidnapping people's kids or burning people's stuff. Its a kids day to go do something fun. All the scary stuff is in good nature. If its anything its a mockery of its former pagan meaning. There's nothing wrong with this holiday. Its not evil anymore. You're wrong.
8) Gluttony is a bit silly. You've got some decent points here for Thanksgiving.
9) Christmas isn't meant to be evil either. Unfortunately this is the most greedy time of the year. People pushing their way through malls when they open is totally wrong. It may be at the wrong time of year of Jesus' birth but that doesn't make it lose its meaning. We should remember Christ every day and the sacrifice he made. The day we remember Him shouldn't matter. 12/25 is fine with me.

Hmm...I pretty much agree with the person that posted above me. Especially about the Halloween thing. I know a good amount of Christians use the argument that this holiday is for worshiping the devil, but it's all a matter of what an individual personally believes. I'm sure some people observe it for that purpose, but not all of us. I like it because it's so much fun to dress up once a year and eat candy. It's just a fun night. ;)

Oh, btw, Valentine's day comes from a saint too, Saint Valentine. You should check it out if you want. (Although I really don't like this holiday either, haha.)

Great point on St. Patty's day, btw.

o.k. I agree with you but as I grow older I have more tolerance and patience with people. This comes with maturity. I used to not let my kids celebrate halloween and then the Lord told me I didn't have to stay inside on halloween and let the devil win. We need to take back our holidays not sit back and let satan have even one day - I won't give it to him- He doesn't deserve it. And when you stay inside on halloween that is what you are doing - giving that day to him. It's o.k. to relax a little and be careful not to become too legalistic. If you studied the months of the year you'd find each month's name has a pagan meaning- what are you gonna do -quit calling them by their name? Celebrate life with love and don't concern yourself with what it means to anyone else.
Blessings- you are on the right track-Keep up the good work of the Lord!!!

i dont know who you are, but thank you for your honesty, i really mean it. anyway where i know what your saying i disagree, yes in we just ignor it then we have let the devil win but be partisapating in it is evern wors, we need to come up with other thing that we as Christians can do. and i also knew that the mounths are taking fron pegan gods so are all the day of thr week there all named after a nores god, and you gave me a great idea, maybe i will change the names of the month thanks for the idea.

In Christ

May. 26, 2008 - Christmas

Posted by ridiculousmom
Hey scrooge, I am ONLY JOKING! I would seriously like to comment on Christmas. It used to be one of my fondest holidays as a child. We always had a picture perfect, great time! I was Catholic and so we had so many spiritual traditions, and songs learned, and also the fun of Santa Claus until a resonable age (about 5 or 6). I have tried to carry on my mother and fathers traditions to my children. It has been challenging the larger our family has grown. Last year we had quite a bit of illness and it was stressful. We did still find time to bake, and that brings me to my point...We have a neighbor that hates us, (and most everyone). We baked cookies and wrapped them up in a plate and put a big bow on top and my husband took the children over to the neighbor's house to deliver the cookies. They were quite shocked and speechless and now they wave and smile when they see us. This time that is supposed to be about giving was the perfect opportunity to teach my children "love your enemies". I have also had the opportunity to witness to a friend who is Jewish through the classical hymns (overtly Christian) that he only hears at Christmas time. The materialism is out of control. My kids know that Christmas is different at our house. They know that while other kids get piles of gifts, they will get one or two meaningful gifts. They are learning "to be content with whatever you have." Family traditions mean more to them than any gift and I believe emphasizing a few great family traditions at Christmas time is emotionally cohesive for the whole family. I hope that at Christmas time when others are only thinking of "getting more" we can be an example to the world. It is a time when others are really watching, and it would be a shame to abandon a holyday that is in fact still the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

wow, thanks for all the comments. ok so lets see if i can give more detals and answer some thing you all said.

1. valentinse day: ok i didnt mean that people worshp cuped or anything like that, but by useing him we are keeping a pegan god alive in our minds, yes we and everyone eles dose not do it for him but he is a big part of this holliday. im sorry for makeing it sound like i think this day is bad, i dont think that, i think its dumb but thats just me. i know thats it is good to do special thing for your special someone, but do we really need a spisific day for it, i know it dosnt always happen but weather you think you or not it does make peopel not do special things for them the rest of the year, we should do those things anyway and more aften. i know not all people are like that but it dose happen. and yes i knew its named aftr a saint.

2. Resurection Sunday: i do think its more then just being sure your family knows the meaning, we need to be showing all the world what it really is. for egsampal, "Easter" is not a national holiday, many place's dont give holiday pay for it, but it is a acsepted holiday by almost all people in the USA, more people recegniz it then momorial day, more people do something special for it, but it cunsiderd a "christian" holiday so the Government dosnt recigniz it. if its a "Christian"holiday why should we have to celibright it the way the rest of the world dose? its our holiday and its time we take it back.

3 Holloween: yes i know that this day (or night) is not what it was at one time, why do we keep the spirit of it alive. this was a evil day (night) and many people still think its a day that "the dead" can contack us. where as the day is not evil it just another day the act of All Hollows Eve is. and we do more then you think in keeping with the real celibrations, jackolanterns are ment to keep the spirits away from ou home, it is the day/night of the most pranks, some are really harmfull. but yes i know that many do it all in fun and games, the day as a hole is bad, i dont care what you think it is bad.

4.Christmas: ok i know that there are many good thing that can be done and do happen regauding this time of the year, i do know that for many it is a great time a giveing and reching out to others, i know that this day can open the door to many people, but that dose not change the fact that this was once an important day, this was a time to rememmber what came into this world for us, a time share the good new with all creation. but not any more, now its all about the gifts, food, decoration, singing chorstmas songs that dont match up with the bible or other historical facts. i know that many people do use this to reatch out but not enough, this day has lost its true perpus. and i dont care when we remimber christ comeing down but the reson for 12/25 makes me angree, this evil world is taking everthing that means the most to us and we are leting them! this is our day, our day to remember, and our day to share with then the new that the Christ came and they can take part in this gloreus news. Christmas is nolonger a christian day it a day for the stores....WE NEED TO GET IT BACK!!! but the only way is if we change how we celibrate it and share that with people and it will turn around.

IN Christ's Love

1) I don't have Cupid in my mind when I think of Valentine's day. That image may pop into my head but that doesn't mean I worship him all of a sudden.
~~~ok agian im not saying we oranyone eles "worsheps" cupid, but like you said that is the image that comesinto you head. `brett`
2) Of course Christians can celebrate Easter however they want to. Just because one person does it one way doesn't mean someone else has to. And calling someone else's method of celebration wrong is only causing damage and is not making any repairs.
~~~yes your right people can celibrate Resurection sunday however they want, but how would Christ want us to celibrate it? and i think that there are way to celibrate it worng and the bible says if you see your brother falling pick him up. `brett`

3) We aren't keeping the old evil spirit alive. Now its something else that is good. There are many people who think the dead can still contact us on this day? Just who are these people? That day WAS bad, and its "decorations" were once representations of something else. This holiday isn't meant as I reminder for anything. Certain traditions were altered but the ONLY people keeping the old traditions "alive". Who are the Christians condemning it. The people who see the day as fun and DON'T perform evil traditions anymore are just fine. Things would be a lot more simple if Christians weren't being "extra" careful.
~~~agian we are to keep from causing our brothers and sisters from stumbleing, and if you do something that dose your told to stop. and would Christ do any of the thing we do on this day? `brett`
4) Everyone (especially in the USA) is well aware of Christianity and its message. I think everyday we should remember Christ's sacrifice but I don't think Christ would want us to turn the day into a 24 hour history lesson about him. Its nice to remember but I don't think Christ would want to turn his selfless act into a selfish one by having others throw HIS sacrifice into people's lives. People are well aware. But they should still have free will. Anybody can celebrate Christmas with us, I think. Loves come through unity, not through seperation.
~~~if everyone knew the thing we should be sharing there would be no probles. i and no your worng people who HATE Christ and Christians should not tack part in Christmas. would it be right for us to celibrate a muslum holiday?? i know that a big diferance. this is a day for the Church to remeber and sare what he did. `brett`

Relating to your second comment:
How do you know someone else's method besides your own is wrong? We cannot truly know how Christ would've wanted it because he died a couple millennia ago. When we think of Christ we have our own developed image and personality of him. I believe God intended it that way.

Relating to your third comment:
Perhaps Christ would celebrate some of things we do on Easter the way we do. I don't know. Its up to us to decide what to do, what Christ would've done, and, no matter what, it will always be different, either big or small, from everybody.

Relating to your fourth comment:
How do you know there would be no problems if everybody did everything right? How do you know what your doing is right? How do you know your friends are doing the right thing? If Christ wanted unity why wouldn't he mind us celebrating another religion's holiday?

Hey Brettt
I am in love with the entry. I agree 110% on all of it. Especially the Halloween and Christmas one. I've always wanted to keep the tradition of Christmas the way it actually is. The whole santa thing is a joke. And I for one refuse to tell my kids about it. Along with the easter bunny. Seriously, how did they get a bunny and eggs from our Lord rising from the dead? Thats ridiculous! And I can't even see how they got that! And for Christmas, I do understand that its a time of giving, but not that children write out list of things they want, and parents just spoil them. I think thats bogus! And Halloween, the fact that kids go out and still say trick-or-treat is just unethical. Haha I've always wanted to use that word in a sentence. :] But yeh, hope everything is going great! have a great summer!!!
