Wednesday's Book Broadcast - Watch for Contest Details Mar. 4, 2008

Ok I have everything ready to go for the first "REAL" installment of my booktime. I have all the bugs worked out so I would love to have you all join me Wednesday at 1pm to approximately 1:30 Eastern at www.reformedhomeschooler.info under ther live feed you'll see an option to join in the chat.  Please join in as this is meant to be interactive.  Tommorow I'll be announcing 2 books for the first book club one book for adults and one for young adults, the great thing about the books I chose is that though you and your child will be reading different books they are on teh same topic so it's a great opporunity to talk about a common subject. 

I'll also be announcing a new book contest.

First Web Cast Feb. 27, 2008

My first webcast a few minor bugs but things went well I think.  I did a quick introduction to whom I am and a little bit about what I am about.  I briefly introduced the book "When You Rise Up" which will be a book I going in more depth in a future episode or as a book club discussion book.

Thanks for those who watched it was nice to see viewers so I know I wasn't just talking to myself.

Book Review: When You Rise Up by R.C. Sproul, Jr. Jun. 19, 2006

As a Christian and a parent who homeschools his children, this is the book I want to share with all the members of my church that have not yet started homeschooling.

Using Deuteronomy 6 as framework for covenantal homeschooling, Dr. Sproul Jr. lays the ground work for what a Christian’s goal should be in the education of their child, no matter what method they choose. The goal is a simple one not to turn out Good Products of the State but rather to raise and nurture your children in the knowledge of God so that they are not just good citizens of society but so that they may one day be citizens of Heaven.

Upon this foundation he starts adding as to why Parent’s are in the best position and are better equipped than the Public Schools or even Christian Schools to ensure that your children are raised properly. He answers questions as to why and how God has called parents to the Duty of Raising their children. He overcomes the argument about who is best qualified to teach your children and the argument of whether you are qualified at all.

He looks at issues such as how to homeschool, and what type of curriculum should be used and he again brings it back to being God centred with the goal not being to please man and their expectations but to please God and meet his expectations. He points out that Education is a process that happens every waking hour of your child’s life from the day they are born and how you should be using those hours in the most prudent manner.

He counters the most common arguments against homeschooling in a simple and easy to understand manner. In my opinion after reading this book it should leave no doubt in your mind about homeschooling as you will see that you are called by God to teach your children, you are equipped by God to teach your children and you are pleasing God by teaching your children. You do not need to understand need to understand Covenantal theology to appreciate this book you just need to have a desire to raise your children as God would ask of you.
