Pet or Dinner Dec. 3, 2007

Well we have a new pet/potential meal.

I live on Prince Edward Island, it's a quiet Island not many big game, no deer, moose or bears etc. so  what hunters hunt are water fowl.  On Sunday we went to friends of ours after morning church for the afternoon.  Before church they had found an injured Canada Goose (it had been shot in the wing) they had wrapped it tightly in a towel and brought it into thier home.  They weren't quite sure what to do with it, but since we raise chickens and turkeys they thought we might be able to so we agreed to take it in and see if we could help mend it.  They thought it would make a great meal, which it might.

We went home and put it in one of our barns (the one we vacate of chickens for the winter).  We made a small house around it of straw bails to help keep it warm.  This morning I went in unwrapped it and gave it some food and water.  It is hissing a little but actually seems quite good, we think it's just taking it's energy to try and heal.  So while fresh goose might sound good we also think it would be pretty cool to have a pet Canadian Goose (since it's wing was shot it might not be able to fly again, we're not sure yet)

We're not the bleeding heart Liberal type and we don't plan on running some type of Goose rescue, just the idea of a Canada goose as a pet sounds good.  So my wife and I made the following decision we are taking our turkeys into to be slaughtered on the 17th (just in time for people to have fresh turkey for their December Feast) so if the Goose seems to be adjusting to our care and not hissing or acting violently towards us we'll continue with helping it mend and will make it a pet of sorts, if we can rehabilitate it enough to fly that would be cool, we would release it, but if not we might have a new pet.  A genuine Canadian Pet.

Shh!! Can You Keep A Secret? Nov. 15, 2007

I'm in the early stages of Planning for a Christian Family Conference in Atlantic Canada for teh summer of 2008.  I've booked a key note speaker and have started on the website I managed to register a really good website name I was surprised was available this summer www.christianfamilyconference.net it's still pretty basic as I'm just getting started on adding the content and I haven't offically launched it yet or made any announcements.

I'm looking for some help from some of you out here in Bloggerland I'm looking to see if you might have any good Christian Family Resources to recommend for the site to add as link.  Just post a comment or message me the site so I can check it out thanks.

Tips For Keeping Your Kids in Church #1 Oct. 18, 2007

I'm starting something new yet again.  All part of my trying to be a diligent Blogger.

These aren't tips for keeping your teenagers in church put are tips for getting your younger kids to sit still and enjoy the service and get something out of it.  Before I begin let me say it is my firm belief that when you are sitting in church your kids should be sharing the same pew as you.  (I'll excuse bigger families who need to take up more than one pew) Your family should be sitting together for the whole service.  Your kids should not leave teh service for "Children's Church" Sunday School, Nursery or any other activity.  They need to sit under the word as it is preached.  The proclamation of the word of God is the most important aspect of worship and you should not deny your children this.

We have two children 5 (6 next month) and 8 we got them originally as Foster Kids when they were 2 and 5  we have since adopted them but when they came to us Church was a totally new experience so we have tried a lot of different things.  Our kids thoroughly love church, my son plays church he's the Pastor, he has his stuffed dogs as his Elders and my daughter wife and I are sometimes the congregation.  He takes a kids bible and "preaches" and prays and sings he even has a benediction (he lifts his hands and says see ya later guys"  He's been doing this on and off for a few years he wants to be a Race Car Driving Pastor when he grows up and he loves honey so he wouldn't mind a wife who's a bee keeper so he won't have to do that as well.  Anyways the point is he understands what church is about and he enjoys it and it is important to him.

So I want to share some of the things we have done to instill this and to make our kids Participate in the service.

Ok on to today's tip.

Tip#1 The Sermon Game

It is a good practice to discuss the sermon with your kids after church, we have a 20 minute drive home so sometimes it is then if we have invited guests for lunch or it will be at lunch otherwise.  We've made our discussions on the sermons  a game for the kids.  The game is basically a way to get them to pay attention to the sermon.

The rules are simple I will ask each child 3 questions about the sermon or the service in general, questions very in difficulty based on age.  The child gets a special Sunday Treat for getting 2 out of 3 right as an added bonus if they get the first 2 right the 3rd question doesn't need to be asked.

Sample questions remember these are meant to see if they paid attention from these we can go on and discuss the sermon in more depth because kids would of paid attention to it not knowing what I might ask..  I would alternate ask 1 child a question then the next etc.  I usually start with the youngest.

The 5 Year Old's Questions

1. What colour was the pastor's tie? (this might seem trivial but it shows if they were paying attention to the pastor as he preached or if they were letting their eyes and mind wander)

2. The pastor had preached on Mark 10:46-52 So I asked him what was wrong with the man Jesus healed

3. Name 2 of the 3 Psalms we sung (we sing Psalms in our church not Hymns) this is a good question because it focuses on another part of the worship

The 8 Year Old's Questions

1. What book of the Bible did the Pastor preach from (she gave me the Book and Chapter she was paying attention)

2 I asked her; What did Jesus say made the Blind man be able to see?

3. What was the Blind Man's name?  This was a hard one she had already gotten the first 2 right so he didn't need to answer it but he did pretty good she knew what letter it started with and sort of said it right.

It's amazing that simple questions can lead to greater discussion, we talked about faith and how this was a different healing for Jesus because he never had to touch the man, another Blind man he spit in his eyes or the woman who touched the hems of his robe had some physical contact but this was all about faith.  We talked about spiritual blindness and the way we are able to see clearer what God calls us to do once we have faith.   And the kids participated because they had listened to the sermon attentively because they wanted to get their questions right so they could get a reward.

The reward is usually some kind of candy or other sweet; we don't have many during the week.  Some times we will let them choose from different things.  They really enjoy it and it has helped them get more out of the sermon and the whole worship.

About Me

I'm a former resident of Nova Scotia, Canada, I relocated to PEI in 2005. I'm married and have 2 adopted children. I am a Reformed Presbyterian and attend the Free Church of Scotland. I live in Middleton, Prince Edward Island, where my wife and I homeschool our 2 children. I run an Online Christian Bookstore. I was raised Roman Catholic, when I was in University I was challenged in my faith over the next few I read Paul's Epistle to the Romans which convicted me enough to know I was on the wrong path, in 1996 I hooked up with Rev. John Shearouse who I had met when I was student and he was part of a student ministry. He had just come back to Halifax, to plant a new Reformed church and I started to attend and made a profession of faith. I have been very active in Federal, Provincial and Municipal Politics, have managed many campaigns and having run as a provincial candidate in 1998.
