Happy Halloween, All Hallows Eve, Day of the Dead, Samhain...However you wish to celebrate this wonderful time of year. Pumpkins and witches and ghouls......Ghosts and skeletons galore. Some people choose to dress up in elaborate costumes and go trick or treating, come choose not because of safety or moral issues. For those that will be going out here are some safety tips for you.
Safety Tips from the American Red Cross
-
Walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street.
-
Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks, and low-flying brooms.
-
Cross the street only at corners.
-
Don't hide or cross the street between parked cars.
-
Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing so you are more visible. (And remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards, and brooms, too!)
-
Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible, have an adult go with you.
-
Carry a flashlight to light your way.
-
Keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flamable.)
-
Visit homes that have the porch light on.
-
Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger's house.
-
Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes.
-
Be cautious of animals and strangers.
-
Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating. And don't eat candy if the package is already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.

Fun Alternatives
-
Find a special event or start one yourself
-
Houses of Worship, Shopping Malls, Community Centers often have organized festivities.
-
College Fraternities, Sororities or Service Clubs may have something planned as well. They often will create an alliance with you for carnivals or face paintings.

I myself will be takeing my four children (five if you count my wonderful husband) out tonight. We'll be joining my father, youngest brother, my sister and her little one, and my oldest brothers wife and their son. So there will be six children in all, with six adults. So with one person attached to each child, keeping in mind that two of them are under 1, we shouldn't have any problems at all keeping everyone together. Since it is so cold, they will not be wearing those skimpy outfits that seem to abound in the stores. Bleh.........James is going to be a vampire which consists of just a cape, a cool hat and face paint. He will be bundled up quite well underneath the cape. Charles and Deedee will be wearing heavier one piece outfits, a bunny and a duck respectively. This allows me to layer a lot under the costumes but the full effect is still seen. As for the littles one, she's going to be a chilli pepper; a big red fleece sack and a green hat. She's adorable. I will be a witch and Carey will be wearing a black hooded robe as a hunchback. We will all have small Halloween themed flashlights, and glow bracelets. Especially James, Carey and I since we'll all be in black.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN & NEW YEARS EVERYONE! STAY SAFE!
