I love reading aloud to my grandchildrenn and during the summer we do that more often. We just finished reading a Frank Peretti book for Children called Down the Dragon's Throat. My grandchildren listen to the stories with pencil and paper as teh illustare what we are reading. Why? Because it adds in coprehendsion and keeps them involved in the story. But mostly because I get such a kick out of the Re-tellings!
I thought of some books as I was writing my last post. Some books have been real blessings to be over the years. I thought if you are still looking for that "read" maybe these are what you are looking for.
With an Everlasting Love is a fictioal story by Kay Arthur. Most people love her Bible Studies, but this is my favorite love Story. I read it often and love reading it to by Beloved. Marriage books are good during summer break, and I just discovered Michael Farris (from HSLDA )has written one for Homeschooling parents called A Sacred Foundation. I love The Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas which now also has a devotional. I also like The Five languages of Love by Gary Chapman.
Now because I mentioned miscariages in the last post, there is good reading for this as well. Jack Hayford wrote one I will hold you in Heaven and Empty Arms is another I read. But my daughter loved Bernadette Keaggy's book (yes Phil Keaggy's wife) A Deeper Shade of Grace.
Classic Christian bookson prayer are my Favorite Andrew Murray In Christ's School of Prayer and Asolute Surrender, anything by Fenelon or Madame Jeanne Guyon, E.M Bounds Essentials of Prayer and Thomas a Kempis Imitating Jesus, Although I have a deep appreciation for John Piper and Max Lucado as well. Phillip Keller's A Shepherd looks at the 23rd Psalm is my all time favorite
Read aloud books I love are Hind's Feet in High Places, Pilgrim's Progress, Frank Peretti The Cooper Kids books, George MacDonald Books and Janette Okes animal stories especailly Spunky's Diary, Max Lucado Children's stories as well as Corrie ten Boom's The Hiding Place and the Diary of Anne Frank
I love Missionary Stories. Hudson' Taylor's Spiritual Secret was the first I ever read, than God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew. The lif and Diary of David Brainherd, Jim Elliot ,Adoniram Juson and The Life and mission of William Carey. I think we don't read them enough and most of them are movies so when the summer heat drives everyone inside, cool them off with a good movie. We just watched the Jim Elliot Story in a Cartoon format! The grandkids loved it and Malachai watched it two times including the documentary part with Steve Saint.
My older Granddaughters are reading Emily Windsnap tales (three of them), The many Peter Pan Books they are finding, and Tirzah' is reading Be The Change by Zach Hunter and a few books on slavery that she is devouring.
The grandsons are loving the Cooper kid books, Malachai has trouble stopping for things like dinner and sleep. They are also reading Three boys and a tugboat by Nan Hayden Agle (I love Three boy books , they are hard to find, but if you can get them they are wonderful.)
And Zemeira and Talia love Strawberry Shortcake Books (that were their mommie's) and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish ,Blue Fish (yes I have memorized it) and every other book they can get their little hands on.
SO what am I reading this summer? Beth Moore's Believing God, The Five Silent Years of Corrie ten Boom and a stack of Christian Women Today Magazines that are calling me.
Silly me, this is a homeschool Blog, so maybe a homeschool book or two should be listed...
