The gift of the internet
I have been connected to this machine for a life time, probably "yours". In our home we had a PONG. We also had ever Atari ever made. Our first extravagant purchase was an external Hayes 300 baud modem. Down loading anything took DAYS! But we could do it! My husband actually ran a Bulletin Board with gave me a chance to talk to so very geeky kids totally science focused about the Lord. Every few years I hear, "THIS is the last computer I will ever need" that is never the truth it is when he says it, but progress changes that all too quickly.
I have said all that to say. I am amazed at all the educational options and references available to home schoolers online. From Bible Study Tools with multiple versions of the Bible to Concordances and Commentaries. E- Books are a Gift beyond measure.
But Today I found this! http://1828.mshaffer.com/
This is an online 1828 Webster's dictionary online You can go and buy a hard copy of this dictionary for around $70.00 (when I bought it ,like computers, it was a lot more expensive) or you can look up the word online! This is truly a gift. Why is this a gift? How about I show you a definition. Let's look at the Word Truth.
This is from the Current American Dictionary of the English Language
TRUTH. truths (tr th, tr ths)
1. Conformity to fact or actuality. 2. A statement proven to be or accepted as true. 3. Sincerity; integrity. 4. Fidelity to an original or standard. 5a. Reality; actuality. b. often Truth That which is considered to be the supreme reality and to have the ultimate meaning and value of existence.
Now this is from Webster's CURRENT dictionary
1 a archaic : FIDELITY, CONSTANCY b : sincerity in action, character, and utterance

And lastly the Webster's 1828 Edition
TRUTH, n.

3. Conformity of words to thoughts, which is called moral truth.
Shall truth fail to keep her word?
4. Veracity; purity from falsehood; practice of speaking truth; habitual disposition to speak truth; as when we say, a man is a man of truth.
5. Correct opinion.
6. Fidelity; constancy.

7. Honesty; virtue.
It must appear
That malice bears down truth.
8. Exactness; conformity to rule.

9. Real fact of just principle; real state of things. There are innumerable truths with which we are not acquainted.
10. Sincerity.
God is a spirit, and they that worship him must worship in spirit and in truth. John 4.
11. The truth of God, is his veracity and faithfulness. Ps.71.
Or his revealed will.
I have walked in thy truth. Ps.26.
12. Jesus Christ is called the truth. John 14.
13. It is sometimes used by way of concession.
She said, truth, Lord; yet the dogs eat of the crums-- Matt 15.
That is, it is a truth; what you have said, I admit to be true.
In truth, in reality; in fact.
Of a truth, in reality; certainly.
To do truth, is to practice what God commands. John 3.
NOW WHICH DEFINITION DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO LEARN?

Wow! First of all, I hear you! I played pong in 1978 (as a 24 year old) , and was amazed at the little ball going back and forth. I also loved PacMan, but the other day I was playing it while waiting for the dentist (yes, this dentist has an old-style, full-sized PacMan Arcade), and I found it BORING. Go figure....
In other thoughts. Thank you for sharing the definitions of TRUTH. I was blown away by the scriptures quoted in the dictionary. Oh, how far we have fallen! No wonder it is so hard to "keep the faith" with not only our kids, but sometimes with ourselves. We truly can't remember a time when the principles of the Bible were the status quo! But at least we knew the Bible stories. Did you know that many well-educated people don't "get it" when the classical writers use names, etc. (like "A Jonah Day") and the general education gurus are concerned and are acknowledging that the stories from the Bible need to be included as literature just so students can have a frame of reference for literature?
This is an outrage!
Come, Lord Jesus!

I enjoyed the testimony of your husband's journey into the ministry. I also liked this post. I had read about this website before and wanted to bookmark it and lost it. So glad you blogged about it. Thanks for visiting my blog.
Are you still homeschooling? Your Grandchildren?
To answer your question, in the traditional sense I am NOT homeschooling my grandchildren, but we spend a few days a week together , some days and some nights, so they have school books here, and I get to do all the fun stuff that I wanted to do with my kids, but I had to put off to teach them Reading and Math.( : I really like being a grandma since I don't have to be the parent making sure they finish the Math page they stared at for three hours.
thanks for asking. Because of Jesus, Bobbie

We love our 1828 dictionary!
It builds muscles every time we use it.....both arm and brain.
I still make my kids use real paper books to look stuff up instead of just going to the internet.

I purchased it as I do like to have my kids learn how to do things the old-fashioned way before they get spoiled by doing it the easy way on the computer. Now, I just need to make better use of it. I have all these ideas but often struggle to put them into practice!
I enjoyed your birthday tag. My 2nd daughter (3rd child) was born on May 2. May 3rd was National Day of Prayer that year and I remember being in the hospital and noting that. It is neat when her birthday coincides with the National Day of Prayer!
Thanks for playing along with my reverse tag! I appreciate your kind comments too!
Blessings,
Angel
