Encouragement Along the Way

Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.

Psalm 34:3

When you feel inadequate....

After all what in the world made "ME" think I could homeschool my children?

The answer...The Lord Jesus"

Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I could teach anyone anything. The Lord's thoughts are indeed Higher than my thoughts and His ways most of the time I cannot fathom. Jesus really does take the foolish in the world's eyes so they will know it was not me at all, it was the Lord.

When I began homeschooling it was not for "Biblical" convictions. My children where undergoing some tremendous religious persecution. Heatherlee has always been vocal about her love for Jesus. I am sure you have a few toddlers that ask complete strangers if the know Jesus loves them. Well that was Heatherlee. Many times in school she discovered herself in the principal's office because she wrote something or challenged something being said or taught.  I have a ton of examples, one seems harmless but it so crushed her heart. It goes something like this.... It is Black History month and everyone in class is encouraged to bring their favorite Black Musical Artists to class and they would play them in class while the kids did their  work. They listened to Prince, Michael Jackson, etc. So Heatherlee brought in her favorite. She actually had a favorite and could join in with her friends. It was cool and upbeat, It was Lionel Harris.

She was handed it back and told they could not listen to it because it violated church and state as well as GOSPEL music has NOTHING to do with Black History! Really, Belinda, that is what they said! The one time she felt like she could participate it was thrown out. That is just one example of why we left the school system.

It was while we were home schooling that conviction came. The more we searched the scriptures the more we knew this was not a choice for us, it had become a command. (Here is my  disclaimer...what God COMMANDS me to do may not be what He Commands you to do. This was for our family.)

All my fears of inadequacy fell away at the Command of my Savior's voice. I knew He would never ask me to do anything He did not equip me to handle. It is the Lord that gave me a love for languages, grammar and diagramming sentences! He taught me joy in History. And it was the Lord Jesus that gave me a math wiz, science junkie for a husband. Everything my children needed to become whom He designed them to be was inside of us and He knew just how to bring it to the surface.

Can God take a stoned, lost ,rebellious high school drop out that would rather be at the beach (I mean who was the genius that built the High School four blocks from the beach????)  and a grow-your-own country boy and turn them into Home schooling parents? Absolutely!  He can so rock the foundations of their world and turn their lives so completely upside down everyone that sees them has to exclaim, "It can only be God!"

So when you cry out to the Lord and ask Him what in the world He was thinking making you a homeschooling parent; when you believe there is no way you heard Him correctly, and when you realize He is asking you the impossible; CHEER UP ` You are exactly where He wants you to be. You are in the center of His will.

He truly does confound the wise, and achieve the impossible.

And one more thing, when those around you point out your inabilities, your short comings and your past (and they will) do two things, Praise God that He has called you to be a part of a miracle and then tell them the guy with all the degrees wrote the teacher's manual! After all, ART Teacher's and P.E Majors are called in to teach Physics all the time and they use the same Teacher's Guide as you do! Plus you have the added bonus of the "Owner's Manual" as you teach your children.

Lastly, this was the command from the Lord to me.... James 4:17

Anyone who knows the right thing to do, but does not do it, is sinning!

Who can argue with that?

Your posts are so encouraging. I have felt so inadequate at times, even just to be a 'good' mom. But you have reminded me that the Lord is not going to call me to do something that I can't do, through His strength. Thank you. :)

I loved this post of encouragement. I remember feeling very insecure about teaching the children when we first started homeschooling. I am reminded of a verse taken from Jeremiah ch. 1: vs. 6-9. We can do anything if we allow the Lord to work through us!

Okay, onto your comment that you left Canadagirl.....Girlfriend, you know that I would be singing "Twist & Shout". LOL. I actually thought of that when I read her title this morning. You are too funny!

Blessings,
Lori

Oh, my "Joe" would be your Heatherlee.
Even when he went to Space Camp in June he got into a "discussion" with his camp counselor about evolution. She didn't know you can't win an argument with that kid.

I can't imagine how he would do in PS. He'd definately be in the principal's office a LOT.

[GOSPEL music has NOTHING to do with Black History] Oh really...

* Thomas Dorsey is a black man and considered the Father of Gospel Music
* Mahalia Jackson, James Cleveland, Andre Crouch... etc, etc, etc
* Most people that study music history believe R&B music had its roots in the African-American church

Rewriting history bugs me. Rewriting history under the guise of separation of church and state... scares me.

About Me

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. This blog is a homeschooling devotional from a bubbe's point of view or watching the next generation excel where I only succeeded.
