The Games People Play
I have mentioned that Wednesday was our Mid-week break day. I needed a Mid-week day in order to catch up on things that needed to get done just so our family could run smoothly. Some mom’s are really good at multitasking, I was not. If I tried to do laundry, you could be certain something would happen like” She wrote on my paper!” or I would return and one or two questions out of twenty may have been answered. Frustration ALWAYS happened when “I” was doing something other that school. It did take me a while to learn that! So along came Wednesday! Thank you Lord for Wednesday’s!
On Wednesdays we would begin with a thorough house cleaning. It this when Toilets were scrubbed, floors were mopped and sheets were changed! Everyone worked hard on this day because they knew what was coming. This time went down in our school book at Life Skills Class. You know they do teach this is public schools, how to do laundry, care for children. In one High School where we lived, they ran a daycare for babies of the students as their Life skills class, so mommies when the older one CHANGES the younger ones that is school!
After Life Skills training, we invited a family from our support group to come over for the day. (This took care of socialization arguments). Since most Homeschoolers in our area were underground the first two years this didn’t happen until we moved to
We would plan a day of Games inside and out. Typical games like Scrabble, Chess, Yatzee and Uno can all be school, Spelling , Critical Thinking Skills, Matching and color training! But Games Like “Go to the Head of the Class” and the New “Are you Smarted than a Fifth Grader” cover all subjects. Axies and Allies teached History. Bible Trivia and Jots and Tittles ( I am told that was bought out by Mormons and is now their church History instead of Christian Church History ) : It was hard, no one knew all the answers and we loved it’ Solomon’s Treasure was all on Proverbs and we had one on the Armor of God as well. That took care of Bible Study. I would love to show you all these games, but again, there was this hurricane! Pictionary is art Cadoo and Cranium also would do the job today. Hi ho Cherry-o and Chutes and Ladders (Or Snakes and Ladders) both teach Math skills to young children. A game day DOES equal School!
We also had project days when we did Paper Mache, relief Maps, cooked meals from various countries and time periods; but my husband’s favorite was this was also Baking Day! Our support group did an Around the World night, each family or child chose a country did reports, maps, gave oral reports and made a dish from that country for all to taste. Heather did
Make sure you have a day to do these kinds of things with your Children, they will remember them all their lives. And you have the benefit of having tea with a grown up Mommie you can talk to and pray with as well!
