Consider this, you have deceived your father, robbed your brother, obeyed your mother who has conveniently forgotten this was her idea and now you are on the run. The brother you shared the womb with wants to kill you. You have been on the run all day. Whether this is literally by foot or by camel, it has been a long hard arduous trip. He looks around and says "Ah, A rock! That will be my pillow!"
I don't know about you, but a rock is my last thought for a peaceful night sleep. Even if I am drop dead tired, I would use my knapsack, my camel's saddle. I would never consider a rock. Yet God sees the details. He sees what is to come and orchestrates this scene, He is the set director, the script writer and the Star all in one.
I asked earlier, "Do you think the Rock is an accident?" To me that is like thinking the Passover Lamb is but a a meal. No, The Passover lamb represents The Lamb of God and this Rock, the Rock of Ages. As Jacob anoints the Rock I think of Jesus the Anointed one. With God there are no accidents.
And as I ponder all these things I wonder, what would I have done? Here is Jacob, sleeping on a rock, out in the open, on a rock falling in to a deep sleep. This is exhaustion, physical and emotional.
Have you ever been so tired hat as you were laying there saying your prayers you fell sleep? you aren't tossing or turning. You aren't fluffing up your pillow trying to get comfortable. No, You are asleep before your head hits the pillow. In this case, it was before his head hit the rock.
What was He thinking about as he fell asleep ? Often as I am in bed I run over my day, things that were said , things I did. The last thing said to Jacob were the words of His Father. "May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples. 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham." Those are the last words he would ever hear from his father. How he must have treasured them.
A stairway to Heaven, angels running up and down doing God's bidding. What a sight to behold. But there at the Top of the Stairs is God Almighty, The actual God of Abraham. God stands beside you and speaks straight to your heart. And what does Father God say? : "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." Isaac's word were a prayer, the word "MAY" is a request. But from His Heavenly Father it is a Promise. It is not “May”, it is "I WILL". There is no place for doubt; with God it is a done deal. And with this comes a promise not only for Jacob, but through him to all generations.
God tells Jacob all the earth will be blessed through him. God had not said this to Abraham, and not to Isaac. He chooses this moment when Jacob is alone and broken to reveal "Jesus"! That is so like God isn't it. God revealed Jesus to be also when I was down and broken. I was so in need of a Savior and so is Jacob. God's timing is perfect.
Do you recall when God met with you for the first time? I was not asleep, but I was in my bedroom. We were in
What about you? Have you met with Jesus? Do you recall the moment you were on life's road and looked up to see Jesus and a detour sign?
