Show and Tell everyone I am home!!!!
Posted in Tags
I am home from my wonderful vacation seeing my mom and two of my sisters! We swam , went to the movies, played with Barbies and played with the beads in my little sisters craft room. The result 30 new Barbie necklaces!

For the 30 barbies my sister was given by a little girl who no longer wanted the naked, dirty, matted haired dolls. We worked magic on them!

As for my picture above... I am sure you all remember that I won a $25.00 gift certificate for Amazon from the Homeschool lounge. When I came home from my vacation, the books I ordered with the gift certificate had arrived! Hooray!
I am a Star is about a little girl who spent her eighth, ninth and tenth birthdays in Terezin Concentration Camp 15,000 children were imprisoned there, 100 survived. This is the Story of one of the survivors. Tirzah, my eldest Granddaughter as a mitzvah for her Bat mitzvah last year collected and made butterflies for the Houston Holocaust Memorial Museum. They were collecting 15,000 in honor of these children.
Terrible Things is an small child's allegory of the Holocaust. Little Rabbit sees the shadows of the terrible things, first they come only for creatures with feathers....and no one stops hem or questions why. The last line is "Sadly, Little Rabbit left the clearing. He'd go tell other forest creatures about the terrible Things. He hoped someone would listen." This book matters today as genocide is so prevailant and as I flew home this week I sat with a Chico State College student; as we talked about Darfur his response was "I don't know why we think we have to police the whole world." As we talked I reminded him that when we as nations said "Never Again" we meant it. And we didn't mean "ONLY never again if it is on our soil or affects my comforts." Compassion must be taught or all is lost.
Six Million Paper Clips is about the Midde School students in Whtwell, Tennessee, there class on the holocaust and how they decided to do something instead of just learn something. They counted paper clips, Six Million Paper Clips.
Selichot A Family Service and Rosh HaShana, A Family Service are the next two books. They are like a Hagadah, not for Passover but for Selichot (apologies, perparing for Rosh HaShana ) and Rosh HaShana beginning a New Year with a clean heart. There is a Chapter in them called Teshuvah. This is Malachai's (my eldest grandson) middle name Malachai means God's Messenger and Teshuvah means Repentance. Malachai is always the first to repent and the one that seeks to please the Lord with all his heart. These holidays focus on repentance and the books do as well.
So thank you very much Homeschool Lounge you have enriched my grandchildren's education and hertitage!
Now, Show and Tell is sponsored byCanadagirl, who I adore and missed terribly while I was away.So even though this is not Friday and I am still recovering from my vacation, HERE is my Friday Show and tell at last!

We just ordered through Scholastic, and eldest dd picked a set of books about WWII and the Holocaust...she seems to be really touched by the stories, and I think I'll check into those you mention, as she would probably really enjoy them!
The sad thing about the attitudes of "why should we"...an entire community in our state is dealing with the ramifications of looking the other way while medical professionals allowed and/or encouraged/directed improper handling of syringes and medicines, re-using both and potentially exposing tens of thousands to infectious diseases. No whistleblowers. The government noticed the pattern, and got involved. No one from the inside stood up. How susceptible is our nation to events as severe as a holocaust, when we will not raise our voices due to fear, apathy, or both? Tragic.
Thanks so much for the resources! Enjoy your reading!

Heroes of the Holocaust: True Stories of Rescues by Teens, by Allan Zullo and Mara Bovsun
My Bridges of Hope, by Livia Bitton-Jackson
Destined to Live: A True Story of a Child in the Holocaust, by Ruth Gruener
Malka, by Mirjam Pressler
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, by Judith Kerr
We actually live about an hour away from Vegas, but grew up there and in the outskirts. I have an Uncle who was treated or tested in one of the clinics, I have a friend who has 3 relatives affected, and it's outrageous. But, I think we're raising a society that says "don't rock the boat", or where people are intimidated into complacent behavior because they fear for their jobs. My parents set an example of doing the right thing, even when there was a cost. My husband is that way, too...he's quit jobs, been fired, etc. for speaking up about things...now he's a business agent, and gets paid to do that sort of thing... ;) It goes way beyond that for us personally, but I'll leave that off-blog, as it ruffled too many feathers in the religious realm!
While it's not a Holocaust story, Hearts of Fire is a really good compilation of stories of women dealing with religious persecution. It's offered by Voice of the Martyr's, a little intense, probably, for your grandaughters to read, though...I passed my copy on to a friend, and will probably wait a couple more years before I let my teenagers read it.
Blessings,
Anne-Marie
