So many families I know decided not to what history coming full circle yesterday. Many let politics over ride the significance of what was happening. In our family, we had the grandchildren come over for Breakfast and watched, talked and prayed together. Here are some of the things they learned that you may not have taught your children yesterday.Did you know that in many states when Barak Obama was born his mere existence was against the law?
“In North America, laws against interracial marriage and interracial sex existed and were enforced in the Thirteen Colonies from the late seventeenth century onwards, and subsequently in several US states and US territories until 1967.”
Similar laws were also enforced in Nazi Germany, from 1935 until 1945, and in South Africa during the Apartheid era, from 1949 until 1985.
Did you know when I was in elementary school there were no African-American children in my school and by the time I was in Jr High 1/3 of my class was African-American?
Between these two events this happened down a few blocks from where I lived.
In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, but the new law had no immediate effect on living conditions for blacks. A few days after the act became law, a riot broke out in the South Central Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts. Like Harlem, Watts was an impoverished neighborhood with very high unemployment. Its residents had to endure patrols by a largely white police department. While arresting a young man for drunk driving, police officers argued with the suspect's mother before onlookers. The conflict triggered a massive destruction of property through six days of rioting. Thirty-four people were killed and property valued at about $30 million was destroyed, making the Watts riot one of the worst in American history.
Riots occurred in 1966 and 1967 in cities such as Atlanta, San Francisco, Oakland, Baltimore, Seattle, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Newark, Chicago, New York City (specifically in Brooklyn, Harlem and the Bronx), and worst of all in Detroit.
Did you know that President Kennedy was treated with contempt because he was Catholic and many said his election would allow the POPE to rule America?
Sometimes differences scare us to death, other times we learn the difference isn't really that differnt at all, and it the worst of circumsatnces Death is the outcome.
Events during his administration include the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Space Race, the African American Civil Rights Movement and early events of the Vietnam War.
The POPE did not rule over the White House nor America.
Did know that the President that loudly proclaimed he was a Born-Again Christian, Pres Jimmy Carter, is the one that signed Roe v. Wade into law?
Abortion is his legacy and all the habitats he builds in the world will not change that. So many are angry at the prospect of Pres. Obama changing our laws especially in this area. They forget who brought it into play in the first place. No President has been able to remove this law although a few have altered it at times. The next President always changes it back, usually on the first day they are in office.
Did you know In the invocation Pastor Rick not only prayed a portion of the “Shema” he prayed in the name of Jesus in four different languages?
Many had been angry at the prospect of this Pastor using Jesus’ name. For my Messianic Grandchildren hearing the Shema and the name Yeshua invited them into the Inauguration personally as well.
When it came to Civil Rights, did you know… Many in the Jewish-American community supported the Civil Rights Movement and Jews were more actively involved in the civil rights movement than any other white group in America.
Are you aware The Bible that President Obama affirmed his oath on was the Bible of Abraham Lincoln?
“Facing a nation divided, teetering toward civil war, President Lincoln used his first inaugural address to call for national unity, arguing that our Constitution was created "to form a more perfect Union." Now, 147 years later, President-elect Barack Obama is echoing President Lincoln's call in words and in symbolism. He will be placing his hand upon the same burgundy velvet-bound Bible that was used by President Lincoln at his first inauguration as he is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.”
With so many historical reasons to reflect on this event, it is an injustice to our children not to do so. They have so much to be grateful for and living in this country at this time in their lives is one of those reasons. there have been many Presidents I did not vote for or agree with over the years. The key is to respect and honor the Office and pray for the man in it!
The last thing I shared with them was to never under estimate the power of God in someone’s life.
Most of the people I grew up with are more than shocked to discover I am a Christian. They thought such a thing would be impossible. But the Lord Jesus changed my heart and then my life. There is always hope so never let go of that hope. Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen…. Be watchful and see what God has planned.
Because of Jesus, Bobbie
