Weekly reading checklists -- or, she learned to love a plan
Posted in Planning
|
I finally did it. I made weekly checklists for our homeschooling. This is only for the boys' reading, which was taken from the reading plan for the autumn 12-week term and divided up into 12 manageable portions. The kids will each get a copy of theirs, and I have the master copy (mwah-ha-ha-ha!). I hope that these will help us see where we are, and stay on track even if a boy falls behind in his reading or surges ahead.

What are the boxes to the far right, for? Are those assigned reading as well? Do you do any of this as read-alouds?

The boxes to the right are books that relate to our history or American studies topics. I plan to have each boy read his in the order listed (most are library books and not on our shelves anyway, so that is easy to control) and at about the rate they are spaced out. Some books are pretty short and others long, most are easy to read and a few are a bit of a challenge.
I have tentative plans to read aloud some of the literature readings, but if I want that to happen consistently I'll have to provide more books for my younger son to read solo -- he is grabbing everything in sight and reading it!
My original plan was to read aloud to him SOTW2 chapters, Our Island Story, and This Country of Ours... but he loves to read all of these to himself. Um...
Son2's upcoming literature selection is the original Pinocchio. I previewed it in August, and I really need to read it aloud. So I'll insist!
blessings,
Barbara

Thanks!
Seeing your lists has made me realize that I'm still in the habit of reading the vast majority of our history reading out loud. I think, perhaps, it's time to turn more of it over to the boys, and focus more on reading aloud to the little ones.
