Poems of Praise

Posted in Poetry
Yesterday we read in Exodus how God gave the Israelites the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire for protection.  As the Egyptian army was very near the Israelite camp, God MOVED the pillar of cloud from in front of the Israelites to behind them.  The Egyptian army was confused and could not see the Israelites because of this cloud.  The Israelites however, still had the pillar of fire to give them light for their journey to the sea.  What a miracle!  God provided protection in many ways and on many days.

We have been talking about the difference between DENOTATION and CONNOTATION.
Denotation is the exact literal meanings of words.
Connotations are additional meanings suggested by words.

The protection God provides was literal for the Israelites who fled Egypt.
The protection God provides is literal for us today.  God's word promises us that.

We wrote poems of praise for the protection of God.
These are in the form of quatrains.

God
Marvelous, Wonderful
Watching over us
Loving, warm, happy, splendid

Savior King
Died for us
righteously treasuring his people

A Broken Wing

Posted in Poetry

A Broken Wing

By CLM

A broken wing
Does hurt gay bird.
Her soaring stopped
A while.

Her tattered feathers
Don't fly now.
Her bones a-shattered
Pain her.

The wing itself
Does not the flying,
Although she's stuck
On ground.

Her soul departs
And lifts, flies on
For you cannot quench
Spirit.

Soon she heals
Enough to try
A trip in skies
Anew.

She aches a little
And thinks to stop
But wind goes on
With her.

Astonished, she finds
The sky is blue
The earth not changed
A bit.

Perhaps her wing,
Though broke and torn
Still carries her
Through air.

And now it is stronger
Once repaired
Not broken so easily
Next time.

Weathered the Storm

Posted in Poetry

Weathered the Storm....

by my daughter-- C

"I've weathered the storm."
Said the crewman quite proud,
In a voice that was boisterous,
Bawdy and loud.

"I rode out the wind
And the pouring down rain.
I steered the ship bravely
And used my sharp brain."

Replied the captain
In a tone that was soft, yet clear,
"Aye, you worked strong and hard,
And showed not your fear."

"I emerged untainted."
Said the boastful young lad,
"My boots muddy, but untorn
Hardly showing the struggle I had."

Said his wise boss
With a twinkle in his eye,
"Indeed, you stayed out of harm,
And hardly had to try."

"I bested those waves!"
Cried passionate youth,
"Though they tossed with might
I beat them-look proof!"

He motioned at ocean
Now calm and serene.
One couldn't see
The storm there'd been.

The captain nodded,
"The sea is still, I see,
And you showed courage, true,
But listen close to me.

"I'm a captain.
I've worked hard for years,
And spent my time,
Effort, and tears.

"I know the ocean
Like my own right hand,
But there's one who knows
Better than I can.

"It was He who braved
Real storms for you
He spoke, and waves stilled
To calm fears of ten and two.

The eyes of the man
Filled with emotion,
As he stared out over
The still, peaceful ocean.

"My boy, be not boastful
In what you don't do,
For the God of the sea
Was right beside you.

"We weather the storms
Through His loving voice.
Believe it or not-
That is your choice.

"But let me not hear you say,
'I am powerful, tough!'
For it is the Lord
Who gave you your stuff."

He walked away then
With a slight little limp,
Leaving thoughts on the mind
Of the foolish, young imp.

"I've weathered the storm."
Said the crewman quite softly,
In a voice that was grateful,
Humble-not lofty.

"You slowed the wind,
And softened the rain.
You held the ship-clearly!
You gave me my brains."
