Our First Day of School

Well, our first day of school went pretty good.  I couldn't believe it, my son(7) was actually excited about starting, that usually doens't happen.  I asked him why and he said I'm just real happy about being in the 2nd grade, I think he thinks that sounds so much older then K or 1st.

I was amazed at his handwriting, We do Handwriting Without Tears and this year we had to move to smaller line paper, Wow, Its beautful handwriting, so much better then mine.  It reminds me of his dads.  I think  it is so neat to see something form right before your eyes like handwriting.  I'm always telling my creative memories customers handwriting is such a part of your personality, good or bad writing will be such memories for our loved ones once were gone, Have you ever picked up a letter or writing of someone who has died and all the memories of that person just sweep in-its amazing to me that my little boy now has his very own style, itsn't that corny.  I just can't help it!

For the first time we are officially doing spelling, I think he really enjoyed it, We are doing Sequential Spelling(I can not recommend it enough)  It is great, I love the whole way they approach spelling and I love the price(only 10.00).

We also did our first read aloud for this year, we are starting with Charlottes Web, this is really crazy but I'm so worried how he is going to handle the ending.  I asked my dh last night, maybe I should tell him to expect some sadness in this book and he told me you will do no such thing (thats a part of having a classic read to you)  to have your heartstrings tugged at.  I'm terrible, I don't like anything sad (for that reason I don't think I can see the movie)  But anyway I won't ruin it for him and I'm sure he will survive it, its just the mom in me coming out wanting to always protect.

My little ones did okay with the schedule (We did have some incidents that made concentrating a challange, but we made it through okay)  I learned how to tweak my schedule some and I also learned some things that my little ones preferred while we were doing school so I think it will get better.

Overall it went really good, I think we all need a little structure back in our lives and I just love this homeschooling thing.  I love reading to my kids, and learning so many great things-I think it will end up being one of the most exciting times of our lives.  I want to cherish it, because time is fleeting.

we did Charlotte's Web last year and I had the same same thing with the ending... it was awful! I knew what was coming. But Eric is right. It just is part of the whole experience. Yes, when we got to the ending, we creid. I almost couldn't keep reading, I was crying so hard! And Abbie was crying, and it was SO sad. But she LOVED the book. And so did I, just as much as I did when I read it the first time as a child. The nice thing was that we were reading it together and so she had someone to cry with her ;)
Part of the magic... the laughter and the tears.
Jen (who is SOOOO looking forward to our dinner date on Friday where we get to go and hang out with no kids, just us!!! WOOOHHOOO!!!) (And to answer your question, as long as it is not McDonald's playland, I don't care where we go LOL! I'll think of something or you can!)

It looks like you had a good day. I hope there are many more to come!
I wanted to ask you if I could put a link in my next blog entry to your post about your son and effectiveparenting.org. I am going to talk a little bit about some of the stuff I learned by reading their website. I wanted to link to your story because it is so amazing and encouraging.
I ordered some CD's from them and can't until they get here so I can listen and learn some more.
